I happened to listen to that Podcast again, with the Firefly's creators and decided to do a little pulsating of the button for the last draws... It really has a lot of power on tap although it gets VERY hot! Very dark brown ABV. No sign of combustion.
Also started using a top screen and I am really happy that it keeps the lid so clean! Always trying to give the Firefly some time over the Lotus. It has a place of it's own in my heart and my day.

I use the flat Arizer screen that comes with the EQ Basket screens, dome it with my thumb into a gentle curve, and place it dome side up on the FF. I think this reduces the flavor and draw speed, but I also like how clean it keeps it, and makes it idiot proof for new users.

I find this combo, the pulsing of the button and the use of a top screen, to be an excellent way to aid extraction and raise the temp. My Red unit still seems cooler, just a bit, than my Silver, but if I slap on a top screen towards the end of the session, and really pulse the button, I can extract quite a bit more. I agree, the thing can get VERY hot doing this. I try to place it on a glass tabletop between hits, which drains the heat from the body immediately.
I only really use the top screen to get more heat towards the end, though it's a nice bonus that it makes it neater. (By this point I'm 15-plus hits into it, and no matter how unground I may start out, by the time I add the screen I have a much more powdery load to contend with.)

I hear ya bromie! Overall I found new life in my FF by going super chunky but you're right it breaks down into finer and finer morsels. At that point I've just been slowing down my draw speed to reduce debris in the mouth or debris flying around and caking the portal with greater success than at first. I'm always bemused by all the various techniques we share. I may be wrong but I'm doubting there is that many techniques discuss with say the Pax. While I've employed a variety it is much more straightforward than the Ff. Not saying that's good or bad just thinking what makes the FF so unique!

How does the FF compare to the LSV from 7th floor? I understand there are things that are incomparable ie portability or battery life. But what about it terms of vapor quality? Ease of maintenance? Enjoyment of use?
I am fairly new to vaping and have enjoyed my FF immensely. What prompted this question was a post from a member that had just gotten a desktop vape for the first. He had stated something asking the lines of " no portable comes close to matching a decent desktop". It's that true in your experiences? Am I missing out?

Desktop vaporizers enjoy the benefits of AC power and typically provide much, much more performance than a battery operated device like the FF.
Apples and oranges, really. I suggest the fruit salad.

The flavor hits from this thing are ridiculous. I love taking a few 3-5 second hits to start a session, you can get some unparalleled flavor this way. It's incredibly pure and delicious.
I used a chunky hand torn grind this time and noticed that the ABV was more uneven than usual. On the plus side, it definitely was a lot less messier than the grind consistency I typically use. Thanks for the tip @Volteric
Also, to answer your question about the Herbalizer: it's tough to compare desktops and portables, but if I can only keep one unit, it's the Herbalizer every time. However, I'm also fortunate to have the FF around for those instances where I want to vape away from my desk, or when I want to sip on some decadently rich flavor hits for a bit.
It all comes down to your personal needs. But yeah, at the end of the day, the Herbalizer's performance significantly exceeds the FF. It basically feeds you vapor.

Damn.... well that makes my decision easier. I feel satisfied with the FF. But how do I resist much much better performance? Desktop ahoy!
High end vapes, like the herbie, are in a league of their own. IMO the only portable that can stand up to the desktop vapes is the minivap(my personal favorite). However it is about 8" long with the battery, making it not very stealthy. It is also convection like the ff so no waste and wonderful taste. For a portable that will actually fit in your pocket the ff is the best one(in the $250-$280 range). I use the MV at home, but if I leave I take ff.

Ha....I felt the need pretty immediately after getting the FF. Vaping does lend itself well to the need for gadgets. I am not limited in my ability to get vapes, but I feel it's sort of a waste because I am a casual user. It's a constant struggle. I'm thinking the LSV is going to be my next purchase.
But maybe if I pair my FF with a small water tool....

Fucked is right, in my indecisiveness I got desperate for a better experience. I fashioned a homemade cooling device with a glass, some ice, a straw, tin foil, and some bits of paper towel. An engineer I am not. I need to just make up my mind and get some real glass.

: ) Thanks for the thought. I was reading through there a few weeks ago. I was think about the D022. The main thing holding me back is the fact that it's not very subtle. I don't like anyone knowing I smoke, friend and family included. I think that's what cemented my decision to get a portable, even when I don't plan on vaping on the go. The LSV seemed small, and if discovered, subtle enough to meet my paranoid needs.

I was a bit stubborn to do this since I've habitually used a grinder for the other vapes I own. With the FF the 'torn and chunky' method works perfect.

Hi all,
I had my FF for about 5 months when it went kaput (no heating). I was one of the ones who thought they had a "cool" one but who overcame through technique.
My replacement is different in a few ways that might be interesting:
Bowl: the glass is cut differently so the "bezel" or edge is half the width (they grind down a "ramp" now that nicely coaxes material into the bowl.)
Bowl: the bottom diameter is larger such that where a Wispr screen does not perfectly fit but has some play and comes out easily (old one fit like a glove especially once "resinated")
Heat: this unit is much hotter but not to combustion, just way, way easier to extract and much darker ABV with less effort. The bowl actually glows more brightly and it is a uniform glow wheras my old one only glowed on the front side.
I could not be happier.

Very interesting. Can you post some pix of the differences you've noticed?
Been considering sending my Red FF in to have them take a look at the coil. It works fine, but somewhat less efficiently than my Silver FF, and can take work to get full extraction. Sounds like it's a good time to do it, based on your happy experience.
