Discontinued The Firefly Vaporizer

How long was your warm up? Was it packed tight? I see the need for less warm up, especially with herb. Try another screen at the bottom slightly domed up to put a little space between the herb and heat. Also, to tight of pack will be more prone to combustion.
Your right, their is a learning curve, but it becomes intuitive after a bit.
best of luck!

I leaned on the heat button probably a bit to long. My first draw was very nice. Then KABOOM it ignited. I like your idea of lifted the material with another screen on the bottom. Might give that a try.

I really think this is boiling down to grind for me. Not to fine and not to chunky. With the right medium grind and the right draw speed and the right temperature control and you've got a really damn good vaporizer!

I go where the thrills are
It might be possible to learn the curve but I'm feeling like the FF has a bit of a curve I'm just starting to master so I think I'll hold off on the screen on top method.

I will say that I loved that it kept material down, the window cleaner and seemed to make the draw more steady.

That guy who posted a few pages back...the one who took the FF apart and did some electrical testing...would love to hear his take on whether it's even possible for the heat sensor to be thrown off by an extra screen. (Again the FF folks didn't think it was, but...)

Volteric are you back to no combustion without the top screen?

I haven't had any combustion issues recently and generally getting good at working this unit. What I'm very surprised by is that while I get medicated and better herb efficiency I just don't notice much flavor and I've tried 4 different mid to top shelf strains. I def think the pax tastes better and so surprised when someone says they taste plastic with the pax.

Why should I be surprised by various opinions, tastes and experiences? :whoa:

I don't think the combustion is a sensor failure, as much as about the thermal mass that can build up from the entrapment of heated gases that can occur "under the dome", if that makes any sense at all.

Something must be happening here. While I am not about to test my current unit for this behavior, I will say that I cannot get my FF to combust under normal circumstances no matter how densely I pack, how fine I grind, or how long I hold the heat button. For combustion to suddenly occur with a top screen, something more dramatic than just a need to finesse one of the handful of variables we normally juggle as full-time vapers is happening.

So, again, haven't tried this with my current FF, but I'm starting to think something changes heat-wise in the chamber when you use that top screen, and it isn't good, or controllable. I wonder if the folks who've done it successfully without combusting have one of those "cold units" the FF folks told me were floating around. (My first unit was a "hot" one...maybe it would have been fine had I never used a top screen. Maybe the "cold" units are cool enough that they can tolerate the extra heat generated with a top screen. Maybe I'm just speculating mindlessly. :bang:)

Still haven't tried the Pax myself but of all the vapes I've used, I think FF delivers by far the smoothest, tastiest flavor. Just my 2 cents.

Why don't you guys try a coarse screen on top of the load so the airflow doesn't change a bit? The one I saw in the pic was pretty fine...

Well I just tried a looser mesh brass screen and I got combustion again...

I agree completely. I'm loving my Firefly, but taste is not one of the reasons. If I have a strain I really like the taste of the Firefly is the last vape I put it in.

Amazing how almost everyone's experience with this thing is different, but all of them seem to be good.

Really having a great weekend with my Fly. So glad I spent the time to get my technique down.

I have an exciting finding to share: the Herbalizer's stainless steel aromapad fits perfectly in the FF bowl AND along with it the FF works as well, if not better, than any oil vape I've tried. So far I've gone through a couple dabs of CO2 oil and a bit of full melt and everything is vaping perfectly, giving me thick and flavorful hits. To anyone else who gives this I try, just be very careful not to oversaturate the pad. If you use more oil than it can hold then it'll leak through the bottom. I'm finding it can hold enough to last me through 2 sessions :)

Ok so I am not into posting pictures yet but try this. I took a piece of nichrome wire and made a spiral with it. This seemed to keep the green down but allow enough air to pass through easily.

I have now improved on this design by wrapping the wire around a skewer to make a spring. I remove that and stretch the coils a little so they are open.

Then I make a tight spiral with the loose "spring." The coils touch each other, in fact they go a little tighter than that. But the individual coils are loose so still plenty of air. The coils are just wide enough to sit in the window and match the height of the top of the glass bowl. The sample is not pushed down just prevented from rising. Airflow is not restricted. So far seems clouds bigger but fewer draws. (4-5)

This keeps the device clean and prevents air from your draw lifting the sample and allowing air to flow around instead of through. I do not pack tight though. Airflow channels are of the essence.

Still experimenting. Just for fun. FF is just fine, I am just always a tinkerer and troubleshooter.

I have also noticed that if I drop my tongue and do a deep mouth draw it works better for me. Thanks to those who suggested that mputh draw.

I wish there was some way to summarize all the great ideas that have been discussed in this thread for future new users. A user-created FF bible of sorts :)

Time to add a new entry to vaporpedia.

I just got my FF Yesterday. Grabbed it from the local shop. should have bought it online but i like giving local people the business. Cost me a few bucks in sales tax but oh well. And I didn't get the extra battery or charger (yet).

Came fully charged. I killed the battery in 2.5 bowls and got obliterated. Charged it for about 20 mins and finished the third bowl. I'm still trying to get my technique down but this is an amazing device.

It's like a MFLB and a journey 2 pipe had an orgy with a nokia cell phone.

I love the instant heat up and will be keeping this by the bed as my instant go to when I wake up at night. I was packing a bowl for the nightstand for convenience but not my preference. It was quick and got me back to bed immediately. Pre-packing the FF is perfect in a pinch to get me back to bed. I will probably stick to my PNP as my go to portable still for convenience, stealth, and battery life as well as Pre-packing multiple bullets though.

I still will probably use this as a portable/travel vape quite a bit but I am still playing around with it to find my sweet spot with use and function in that climate.

Def will have to get the extra battery and charger. The battery life on this is the main detractor. But I think with practice I can streamline power consumption a bit. Much like the MFLB, extra batteries are your friend.

Here is the current one. Really liking so far. Can do nice hand grind and it doesn't move or restrict airflow. As long as it isn't full enough to compress then no charring.

Can you show it to us on it's own? :)

Here are some 'kinda ghetto' scoops I made to fit device bowls for speedier loading. The green is for the Firefly and the blue is for the Lotus.

I made them with aluminum flashing.

scoopz.jpg

What is this aluminum flashing? Can I get some from hardware stores? Can I use an aluminum soda can instead? I don't need one for the Lotus as it's al stem is the perfect scoop but I am sure the FF will need one… Loading is it's weak spot for me.

And still waiting for my beauty… :uhoh:

I've started to use the "hand-grind" only technique the past few days since I'm still waiting for my jumbo SCS to arrive. I must say, it's been giving me as good or perhaps better results than grinding. Less grimy buildup on the window and in the airpath. And it's kind of nice to not be grinding. I think I may start grinding only for travel use and hand-tearing for home use - from Cvault to JyAR to straight in the Fly! Tastes even fresher.

Although I feel a little uncomfortable "breaking up" the material in the bowl. Seems like maybe I'm putting too much pressure on that screen - which still hasn't needed a cleaning since I bought the FF.

Still have to try the whole method though...

I think grind is the key to this device. Everything else had been directed by the grind, namely draw speed, air flow and temperature control. My grind was too fine and it affected those other areas. Now with a medium grind the air flow and temperature feel easier to control with more regularity/consistency.
