Ok having success with medium coarse grind (redundant I know) but not a full bowl, and no pack. I just pour grinder onto a playing card and just lean it so it's all slides in. Move it to make sure all is "inside" the bowl, just BARELY 3/4 of the way, NO PACK. I got the same amount of hits 6-7) but didn't have to draw as hard (?) and still got it dark brown tabacco, no stir just slight pack AFTER 3rd bowl

My Firefly should be coming Monday. I have been reading all of your posts about technique, and while they vary, it seems like the coarse ground or whole buds is best bet, with proper button technique and medium drawspeed. Using a top screen would be best for fine grinds (I recall that the combustion issue with top screen turned out to be faulty unit. I like that you shake the unit to stir with top screen. :p:p

I go where the thrills are
I have searched for the best grinder for the Firefly. Spacecase, Mendo Mulcher, and a old school wood & nails grinder. Now I have settled on a grinder first referred to us by mitchgo61 (I think). It is the cheapest grinder you can find. Your fingers are the best grinder for the Firefly — period.

Heh, yes, that was me. The FF folks said to use a cheap acrylic grinder and even sent me one, which I tried...but I always revert to plain old manual finger grinding. Especially this time of year when the air is dry...pretty easy to achieve whatever level of grind you want with fingers if the material is dry.

Plus, as I also think I mentioned, I feel like I lose 10% of my product in the damn grinder teeth! :bang:

Exactly.

I made a scoop out of a piece of aluminum that holds the perfect amount when filled.

The device is so easy to clean that you'll soon decide that the top screen is in the way etc, the dudes who made this beaut REAAAAAALLLLY put A LOT of thought into the design. Def wasn't some 1+1 type shit. I mean, I just bought a replacement lid just because i agree with the price. That being said they DID raise the price by $5 when no one was looking

I did not get the vapor production from a whole bud that I do from a medium finger grind. Plus, finger crumbling a 'pre-cooked' warm bud is a sticky icky mess that I prefer to avoid.

The first few hits you don't of course, less surface exposed, but you don't get the uneven roasting that happens in a conduction unit where it needs to maximize surface to better vaporize.

After the first few hits, when the bud is dry but still green, you just crumble with something pointy, no mess at all. ;)

This way you still have the trichomes that give you the flavour, try it and then let me know.
One time won't hurt. hehehe.

Yeah, just tried a whole nug again. Too much 'draw work' with very little pay-off (imo) especially compared to ground material. I would rather do less 'draw work' and get more vapor but that is just me. Plus, the nug is now more sticky, but, that must be strain related.

I think the 'whole nug' thing works against the Firefly's design concept. I do not think the Firefly is high-powered enough to develop the heat required to effectively nuke a bud considering the added airflow. My attempts were not effective or pleasant. :\

It is more sticky because the trichomes are all there instead of the grinder. You have to wait longer before breaking them, and use something pointy to break into smaller nugs and then do some hits.

I have to be honest, i think it is a matter of technique. It wouldn't make sense for a whole nug not to work in the FF, it is completely manual and it is convection.

Although, i don't know if it pays off in the end because the FF has a small autonomy but i use this technique in all my vapes now because they are almost 100% convection except for the Vaponic, and i get great results and i notice a clear difference in flavour and the sessions and the taste itself lasts longer. You get higher too.

I don't get that instant milk/huge cloud on the first draw as i do when i grind though but i like it better this way.

The point is that whole nugs in the Firefly are not really suitable for good vapor production (if that is what you want). To me the Fly is for leisure and whole nugs makes it a work experience.

100% agree.
Putting a whole un-ground little nugget into the Firefly is a good way to disappoint yourself with poor vapor amount & quality.

This vape is NOT good for this, although I don't understand why you would want to do this anyway.
It's counter productive and decreases surface area that airflow passes by.

Steama i use a business card folded in half long ways...place my herb in that and use that to fill the bowl...and fingers are the best grinder if the herb is cured right. my grinder gives me a nice grind but i run my finger over it to get it just a little finer. .2g in the bowl and i can get 4-5 nice hits.

Day 3 and this vape let me down today!!! i forgot to put it on the charger last night.....lol my spare battery will be here today or tomorrow. I had a scary/happy thought last night...i wonder what FF2 will be like

Premium package + Sarah C = Firefly HEAVEN. Hands down, the best customer service to go along with the best portable vape. Is it just me, or is anyone else at all curious to see what Sarah looks like? :)
Ha! Buddy of mine said the exact same thing.

I have been dealing with Stacy M and Caroline at Vape World. Undoubtedly two of the nicest women I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with. ...and Caroline has this sexy German accent...

Yup, I need to get out more. :brow:

It seems the FF needs a bigger nugg then, when i use this method i make sure that i cover the entire bowl area to force the air through the nugg and not around.
This method is counter productive for maximizing vapor output but instead it is Excelent to maximize flavour and consequently terpene extraction due to the higher percentage of trichomes present. :)

I am going to support vorrange here. As we know flowers take many forms. If you have a really dense flower this method is just not going to work. But some of us like the looser strains that are known for their lose flower structure. In my case they are dry and will crumble if I try to manipulate them. But I can put in a whole flower and the leaves are so loose it will allow air flow through very easily. It keeps that pristine state to the flower and doesnt lose any of the little droplets we all know and love. Then to get the center and make sure it has been properly utilized a little crush/stir with a skewer exposes the last bit of goodness.
If the flower is dense I just medium grind or break it apart of course as these type of flowers dont allow a lot of airflow, I feel like I am sucking my brains out and it is counter productive.

After a few weeks of use I thought I would chime in again. I've been researching grinds and heating techniques, all in the name of science of course, and have reached some conclusions.
The FF is incredibly versatile, you can get any kind of draw you desire just by altering your draw method or grind. Clouds or small tasty hits without changing heat temps are easily obtainable.
From the first hit to the last the taste is unmatched by my other vapes. Every different strain I sample has it's own unique flavors.
I tried the whole unground bud method and was rewarded with yummy new flavors, take a couple hits, flip it, take a few more then break it up, simply wonderful.
Between cleanings I use the supplied brush then a blast of air to clean for the next bowl, if you trim about half the length of the narrow long bristle side it becomes stiffer and more useful.
I had to re-seat the small o-ring under the window a few times with the supplied toothpick. after tightening the screws it hasn't moved.
Iso and q-tips work well for cleaning, I try to keep the iso from the o-ring.
The FF has become my vape of choice, and I'm thankful for it and this great resource for discussing it.

I don't really find the dense bud a problem although i agree that it is easier with a less dense for the reasons you mention in your comment, at least in the vapes i use. I just poke it or pierce it with my toothpick to increase air flow a little bit, and as the buds get drier due to losing moisture it gets easier to break into smaller bits.

Perfect! This sums it up nicely. ;)

And just so no one gets a different impression, i'm not saying this method is better than grinding. I'm saying it is tastier and you extract more trichomes which also has other advantages.

For milky thick hits right from the get go, grind is always best. I do get milky hits after a few airier but very tasty hits when i break the nugg into small little nuggets. :D

I might be ordering one today. Originally liked the Red but its a bit too much in your face color...Spilt minded between Dark Grey and the Light Grey. Leaning towards the Light Grey...does anyone have 'real' pictures of the light grey in use? I have seen plenty stock. Sarah C. from firefly is edging me towards the gDark Grey.

Just as a poll what color do people own on this thread?

Red
Light Grey
Dark Grey

Thx

I ordered a Dark Grey. Looks classy and I imagine the glowing bowl will stand out against a dark color

I am waiting for a dark grey... Waiting and waiting...

I know the feeling...I tried to order yesterday but missed the cutoff. I will order today. I wish I could get it by Sat but that requires addnl $60 postage. hmm Should I buy x22 extra batteries for that money and wait like 7 days or pay the extra and enjoy my weekend???? Dang tuff decision...

Extra batteries would be the better bet. 60 bucks for shipping is just lost money unfortunately. Mine is expected to be here on Monday, but I have my fingers crossed that it will arrive this weekend. It shipped Tuesday, and I am in the midwest.
