Tek Spiderman's Oil Extravaganza!

I am who I am and your approval isn't needed!
Is there some kind of 'special' parchment paper you need for this ?? I picked some up marked as such on the label, yet wasnt very thick (about the thickness of standard wax paper you bake with).

I blew an ounce of top quality buds into a 12x8 fully lined dish, and it turned into a disaster for me as it appears to have seeped through as it purged over another dish of hot water. In for a penny, in for a pound, I let it finish its initial purge and when done..... the parchment paper I was using more or less self destructed (was falling apart) to the point that I deemed it un-salvageable and tossed the whole lot.

Is this method perhaps only meant for micro runs ?
Did I have the wrong parchment paper ?
Am I an idiot ?

Beats me, but for myself.... I don't think I'll be doing 'that' ever again based on my wasted experience.

Bummer for sure, live n learn I guess.... but thats my story...... and now I'm sad !

You guys should just work on your scraping technique.
It might seem like a hassle, but it's really not and should only take half a minute or two (not '20 minutes'...).
While still warm and viscous I don't even need to apply heat, but if it does cool, a simple smear works fine.

Get a proper pyrex plate also.
Anchor Hocking makes plates that are angled to the center, instead of the edge like most pyrex plates.
3.99 at Walmart, or online.

Spraying directly onto parchment paper has no benefit. It may 'work', but glass is inert, safe, cheap and effective; tried & true.

man, I feel sad for you. In the pit of my gut. It is a profound sense of sympathy.

I looked into parchment paper over here- but gave up because I wasn't too sure on the differences between the parchment paper we have here and that in the USA. We don't have as big a market to choose from. The only 'parchment' I could find was specialist paper from art type shops, and only coloured or bleached. Unbleached I could only find baking parchment, which has a high temp silicone coating added. I had no idea how this might react with the solvent. Did yours have silicone, smokum?

Well i use these foil bags . The brand is fino. 3$ 5 bags.. you can roast your chicken even in the micro wave.. safe till 250 C .. + they are transperant and you can view the oil like they view X-ray pics.

I've even purged qwethanol on them :) !!

Man that sucks really bad about the failed run.

As far as I can tell... the parchment paper i'm using is just a local grocery stores own brand, has nothing on it about high-temp anything or any lining. Just says parchment paper.

The butane doesn't really seep into the paper at all for me, when I line the dish in parchment and some of the parchment is running over it does get into the water bath and the edges get wet with water, but this doesn't seep any further into the paper than where the water itself touched it, and when i put the paper in a pre-heating oven (to 170f) the sides/corners that had been slightly dipped in the water completely dry up.

I've never had any trouble with the paper "disintegrating" or anything like that, the only time I had any issues with the paper is if I was too tough in my "scraping" with a razor and i ripped the paper where the oil was sticking to it too much. To solve that problem i usually just fold the oil into itself on the paper using the freezer technique.

and @spiral:
I'll be completely honest, this is mainly why I have been doing it on parchment cause it makes it so much simpler and less tedious and frustrating. I may look into these dishes in the future.
Although personally I have found absolutely no difference in the way that my oils vape, the quality of the oils, or residue left behind compared to when I do it by straight pyrex dish.

WatTyler,

Like MW, mine is grocery store bought and only says parchment paper on it, with no 'ingredients' or any mention of anything else on the box so I have no idea of its coating (even if it just looks like regular thin waxed paper to me).

Chit happens..... I tried it and it didn't work (for me), no biggy, just thought it would be a lil quicker and less mess is all. But I'll go back to my old faithful of scraping again which worked flawlessly for me every time (even though its a little difficult to do with my big mitts. Maybe I'll look into some surgical scrapers instead of using a single edged (mechanics type) razor blade.

I like to use a clamp(hemastat?) To hold my blade when scraping to avoid clumps sticking to my fingers. I also use a scalpel to scrape corners as it has a curve and will also flex a little.

i like hte scalpel tip! thanks dude!

i also use a set of vice grips to hold my razor while scraping.

Ahhh, vice grips- I like that tip! I've been getting sticky fingers, and sometimes when the razor blade 'falls over' and goes splat against the dish it's a right mess.

I've been getting good return though- last run I did 10g bud, 1.7g oil from the first run, and 0.3 from the second. 20% :o It was good bud. I expected a better balance between the two runs, but I had packed the tube tight for the first one. No grinding though- just broken up popcorn size by hand.

The ground up second run hardly seemed worth it- just 0.3g- but cumulatively over a couple of runs it surely is. So, I've just ordered another extractor tube- much bigger this time; 30-60g capacity. I will save up the leftovers after the first wash in my 10-15g tube, and then when I've got enough saved to fill the big tube it should give a worthwhile amount of oil to work with.

20% is awesome tyler! and for 85% of that to be in the first wash. an extra bonus! :)

thats also a good idea on the larger tube for a 2nd wash batch :p my m8 has a larger tube and thats just what we do once we have enough 1st wash remains to a run.

Funny you guys should say that stuff about saving the extras for another bigger run ground up. I just decided to do that with my last two runs. :D

haha same here, but i filled my turkey baster 11 times with first run stuff. It yielded a surprising amount

Did a run today w/ trim. I blasted directly onto parchment paper, which was a mistake. To set it up, I draped pp over my normal collection pan, angled it toward a corner and cut a drainage hole; thinking the oil would stick to the paper while the butane would run off to the pan below. Instead, both butane and oil drained off, leaving me to scrape the pan as normal. I'm glad the parchment didn't have any prolonged contact w/ butane though, seeing as it chemically damaged some parts of the paper; left the finish looking splotchy.

oil came out great though. buddered up really well after sitting on the coffee warmer for a bit and then folding it up in parchment paper.

Did a run on some real fluffy buds yesterday. Normally I can get about 12g's in my Honeybee but I could only fit about 10 this time. Ran about a half can and only ended up with about .6g. Not enough tane? It was less than I normally use, which is about 3/4 can. I'm going to see what I get out of the second run before I start blaming herb potency (the bud looks and smells comparable to previous runs)

Now the taste and look of this oil may be the best I've made yet

edit: Added about 2 g's of fresh buds to the ground up 2nd run. Got .7g more. Guess this bud is 10-11% bud

Hey everyone, so I saw this Video, and thought the product may have a use.

I dont know much about the chemistry but when I saw it I immediately though of using it to make BHO in. By coating the container the butane is sprayed into one might be able to just pour the oil out instead of having to scrape it...I wonder

that wouldn't liquefy the oil, so I doubt pouring it will work. anyways, would you wanna smoke that shit? it's definitely not food-safe.

The non food safe applications are amazing though! I wanna coat my entire house in that stuff, and maybe my car too!!!

BTW, AV, I have also been doing stuff very similar to that amber pic!

EDIT: http://www.fuckcombustion.com/viewtopic.php?pid=176093#p176093 read the part of the Cano liquid pad MOD in the herbo bowl...I now have what I consider being the best concentrate vape possible (home unit of course)! It vapes 0,1g of BHO for hours with THICK clouds in the tube... And I saw the BHO liquify and get into the mesh "pallet": MAGNIFICENT!

i have been meaning to try out the abs. amber tech, seems to produce pretty nice results. here is some lemon skunk running at ~ 19%

Looks tasty Stroh! I want to poke my dabber in there

Here're a couple of my latest runs to see me over the festive period.
dscf0449t.jpg
dscf0450p.jpg

The lovely golden one was from fair quality buds- Ice Cream, with just under 14% return from a single wash. The other dark one was from some old poor quality popcorn buds that I've had in a jar doing nothing for many months, along with a vial of keif collected from my 4 piece grinder over the last lord knows how long- could've been a year.

The golden coloured oil is what I've really been trying to make- it just looks so clean and appealing- and I feel I've been having quite a high level of success for a beginner (although when I add it up I've ran through a good few oz's now). I've not been that impressed with the taste though. Looks beautiful, tastes like shit... even rubbery and oily tasting (duh), and doesn't really bear that much resemblance to the flower from which it came.

This dark stuff on the other hand. Wow. A totally different taste experience. Almost nutty and caramel whilst still remaining herbal. I've not got the most developed and tuned palate, and I won't even begin to try and describe it further, but all I can say is that it's complex and much more enjoyable than my light coloured stuff.

I suppose it stands to reason that the darker has more 'impurities' to deliver the taste, but I'm just kinda disappointed that the golden stuff doesn't seem to compare in my limited experience. I wish I could visit a dispensary to have some bench marks to compare to.

So, why is my dark one more tasty? Extraction and purge was the same, but the quality of the bud was lower. The bud for the dark one was well cured- a factor? (not what HMK tutorial indicates- fresher= tastier). The addition of grinder keif? The finer grind? As it was old, cured and dried it was pretty crumbly and finely broken. I dunno. Ideas on how to replicate it welcomed- this is the oil I think I'd rather make. Not as pleasing to my eyeballs, but more so to my tongue.

adding kief for some reason makes oil go dark. I don't understand why, but that is the general consensus!

I made batch of bho that tastes like fish oil! it's really weird :p the strain wasn't like that to begin with. the oil came out a reddish pink colour though and it works a treat! i just wish it also tasted better :p

I think certain strains just will do that. (taste funky compared to what you expected)

Hey Guys,

I did my first BHO run the other day (I'll upload some pics soon), and I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips...

First, I went out and got everything i needed;
Pyrex dish
Stainless Steel Turkey Baster
Unbleached Coffee Filters
Steel Mesh
A clamp to hold my mesh and filters
and Butane (less than 30 ppm impurities)

I loaded 8 grams of herb (my normal vaping stuff, no idea of the strain) into the SSTB, packing it in pretty tightly.
Then, I put the filters on the end of the SSTB - I had 1 layer of mesh, 2 layers of coffee filter.
I went outside, and ran about 3/4 of a 300ml can of butane through the herb.
Once most of the liquid butane had evapped on its own (maybe 5 minutes), I brought the dish inside, and put it into a double boiler setup on my stove (It's an electric stove).
I tried popping the bubbles with a 7th floor pick, but the oil was sticking to it, so I switched to using my torch pop the bubbles with heat.
The bubbles popped nicely, and I didn't smell anything that would tell me I am over heating it.
Once I finished the purge, I scraped up my oil and ended up with 0.4 grams of very nice looking BHO.

Not being happy with a 5% return, I pulled my herb out of the SSTB, threw it in my coffe grinder, and gave it a quick grind (<5 seconds) just to break it up a bit.
I repeated the above steps (using a new can of tane, using a bit more than the 1st run), and got about 0.2g of slightly darker BHO.

I was hoping for a 10% return, but I only ended up with 7.5%.
Is there anything I am missing?
Any tips for increasing my yield?

Thanks in advance for the help.

How good was the stuff you used to make it? I use a SSTB and fit 14grams in there and get 15-27% yields on first wash with high grade.. Next time try breaking it up a little and pack more in there

Its kinda hard to gauge the quality of the herb, I'm in Australia, so I cant really give you much info other than its the same quality as i get normally, and I have no complaints about its strength when im vaping it.

I'm not sure if its relevant, but it's a red strain (from what I have seen, strains seem to be either red, white or purple)

is there a "best" size to break the buds to?

I thought I had read somewhere that is best to leave them whole?
