tuk, I'm aware of Iso's volatility, but where I'm doing it is fairly well ventilated, plus I'll run a breeze from a fan just to be sure.
Obviously it's your call at the end of the day, being well ventilated doesn't negate the fact you are bringing two elements close together which should really be kept apart, there are many unforseen things that can happen when bringing a highly flammable material together with an ignition source, eg your grip slipping on the dish for a split second causing iso to spill on to the HC or tripping over the cat....a fan is also an ignition source btw.

Using the ssv as the heat source for iso evap might only be slightly better(might even be worse if the temp is not stable) than a tub of hot water which is 100% safe, as you said: I'm not after instant evap, just more of a helping hand so to speak, if a tub of hot water is good enough for GreyWolf then why take the risk? .....it's your call tho just giving you a warning to be very careful around iso.

Safety First!

Hey Hey
I truly appreciate your concerns tuk, but as a man of science, I always apply a cost/benefit ratio to safety matters.

Pig-headed I know, but I'm an able-bodied man with no cat:lol: and with the small amount of iso used(~ TBLspoon) and using inverse square laws, I'm sure no ignitable fumes could reach downwards the 3" it would need to go.

But just for your peace of mind, I'll take it out on the verandah the first time, have a bucket of sand and my welding gloves at the ready. If the safety's good enough for oxy-acetylene, it'll be cool for iso:tup:

Great to hear, so what are the benefits of this inherently risky method over the 100% safe tub of hot water?

Iso fumes can't travel more than 3" ? ...Okay!

If the safety's good enough for oxy-acetylene
Lets be completely clear, what your suggesting would never be approved for safety in an industrial workspace ...to recap: evaporating highly flammable fumes from a highly flammable liquid 3" from a live ignition source, the quantity is irrelevant, safe practice is what counts.

have a bucket of sand
Good luck finding that bucket when your face is on fire

Hey Hey
I sorry, but after this post I won't be able to continue the debate as it's sleepy time.

1st point: Benefit is not having to go and get hot water. Small benefit, but anything that can extend my laziness is worthwhile. Plus if it works, it's a working experiment. Science baby.

2nd point: Inverse square law. PPM gets less exponentially as vapour moves ,as it is not in a straight line, but moving outwards, upwards and downwards.

3rd point: Disagree, many workplace methods have inherent dangers. If the procedure is deemed safe enough(there's that cost/benefit again), it'll be approved for OH&S. I am a worksite tradesman, this happens all the time and undeniably the opposite does too.

4th point: I'm at times, a stupid, crazy, bastard. I've eaten fire, done chin-ups from a 20th floor balcony, surfed a car doing 100KMPH(60MPH) and jumped from a third storey roof into the shallow end of a pool.
One of these days, one of my nutter stunts will put me in hospital or more likely, the morgue, holding true to my man Charlie D. But even still, I hugely doubt it'll be a spoonful of iso in a bowl cold enough that I can pick it up barehanded that gets me:nod:

Just received my SSV today, i'm currently doing the initial 20-30 minute burn off. One thing i noticed is that the Metal cylinder where the Heater Stand Cap goes is warped all over. Still goes in the hole and from what i can see it does its job. i hope its not a big deal, anyone out there in the same situation? Will post pictures of it once it's not scorching hot.

got my e-nano screens in today! boy o boy these are crazy, i zonked out after giving them a good test run :rip::zzz: :rip:

where do you guys usually place the screen / what power setting do you run it at? amazed at the amount needed to get clouds...

I keep my temps low enough where even though the material covers the Heater Cover and hole, it is still safe from combusting using a constant medium draw, from the diaphragm. Usually start on 1/3 of the SSVs power. If I want get them "dab sweats", I start at 12:00, which is about my units 50% power, where you just start seeing the heating element glowing bright.

Of course this would be the thickest vapor. If you need something with less pop, keep the distance of material to HC farther away.

So, I've been thinking lately, what is considered a "tasty" hit. Is it just a sample of vapor from a fresh bowl like a small sip, or is a full draw of a huge cloud. I still consider the SSV the best tasting vaporizer I've owned,.

Hey Hey
Soooo, my curiosity got the better of me today, so after work, I set up my (admittedly rough) experiment.

I gathered my materials, Cold SSV w/top, spoon, bottle of iso, bucket of sand and welding gloves. As my face was to be nowhere near the cup at any time, there was no danger of exploding face syndrome:lol:

I went outside on the verandah(shady), plugged in my SSV, put approximately 1 TBLSP of iso in the cup, turned on the SSV to it's lowest setting(around 7 o'clock), put on my gloves, sat back and waited... and waited... and waited.

Twenty minutes later, I turned it up to 9 o'clock and waited... and waited... and waited.

After 40 minutes total time had passed, I was like, "Fuck this!". So I took off my gloves, went inside, packed a MFLB tray and went back outside.

After that tray and another 20 minutes later, I looked at the iso and noted that it had gone down noticeably, so I went back inside, packed another tray, then back outside.

Finally, after an hour and twenty minutes, the iso had finally evaporated, leaving no smell, except for some remnants of Lemon myrtle that was in the dish previously. The glass bowl was laughably cool and I was able to remove it barehanded with the SSV, still set at 9.

So my first experiment I consider a success. Now comes the repetition part . I've purchased more iso and a small measuring cup from eBay, so that I can repeat my tests with accuracy. I'll be sure to take some pictures and possibly a stop motion video so others can see my progress as I do this daily for a month.

The best flavour I've had to this day, is still from the first hit from my Plenty. It's so nice. I personally think that those lower temp hits are always the tastiest, but that doesn't stop me from chopping and changing around. That's what I love so much about the SSV, you can get anywhere you want with it:bowdown:

I read the post a few times, and am not sure what the experiment was, or the purpose.
You did not discuss vaporization using your SSV.
The only tools you discussed vaporization with is the MFLB and the Plenty...
You complimented the taste of the Plenty, and praised the speed (in a subtle way) of the Launch box.
This makes me wonder if this post is in the right thread.

  1. what was the experiment?
  2. what were the tests you are going to repeat?
  3. what progress are you looking for

OK guys- had my SSV for over a month and pretty happy with the choice. My lungs are thanking me and my singing voice is stronger with a slightly higher range.

Anyhow - I'm still on the learning curve. I've set it up to run through my bong (makeshift until WPA arrives) and it's pretty smooth. I run it on about 2 o'clock but sometimes I let it heat up for a bit more than 2 minutes Does this matter?

Also - how can u tell if u are getting vapor or combustion? when I get thicker clouds with a little more temp I worry that it may be combusting? The herb is only ever medium brown, never dark brown or black. I like getting the clouds but it can be a little tickly on the throat even through water. But when I scale the temp back the medication is not as good.

Hey ozzie, trust me if you burn it you will know. It tastes awful and your wand starts glowing a little due to the glow from your herb combusting haha, but yeah when you turn it up a bit more to get the thicker clouds it can really tickle your throat :o but don't worry you aren't burning it. I personally like the tickle, in fact I love turning it up high to get as big of a cloud as possible and making myself cough like a mofo, but that's just personal preference.

100 $ refurbished units at SSV'S website
Im at the step to order, however, the optional upgrade to choose a glass style lists the regular version for ten dollars. Does this mean w/o that "optional" upgrade the unit they'd send ne was inoperable?

I assume so as well. The ssv won't function without a heater cover and wand

They say it ships with whatever is most on hand at the time of order. You can be sure to specify but it's an extra charge.

Just ordered, how long do they usually take to ship?

I see the notice for 15% off and $100 reclaimed units but I can't find them to purchase? The reclaimed ones are showing up as $180 on this page: http://silversurfervap.com/sale-items/blemished-silver-surfer-vaporizers.html

A backup would be nice!

[EDIT]: Never mind, I figured it out. If anybody else is wondering, the price adjusts after you've added it to your cart.

[EDIT 2]: Reclaim SSV ordered; I upgraded to ground glass (I already have a few standard), black housing and yellow base. Backup SSV incoming! Ohhhhh yeeeeah :D

My goodness, I'm definitely going to have to recommend Tweak's mod. After a swap to the mini wand with the basket screens, I'm getting ridiculous vapor. With the bong mouthpiece replacement I'm able to bong it with ice, and I'm getting just absurd vapor production off like ~0.05g. It's absurd!

I just missed the new year discount back in January, dropped 7th an email & they replied saying to place my order and they would apply a belated discount at their end....which they did.

Sorry to double post but I can't edit.

Thanks to you I emailed them, and they were happy to hook me up with a $100 SSV! So I guess thanks to you @tuk now I am $114.50 poorer. Aw shucks!

Are the refurbed units from 7th Floor typically pretty good? I haven't seemed to heard too many complaints, why I ask! Thinking about maybe asking them about one for a gift for a friend. :]

Also, has anyone used the aroma top oil diffuser thing? I googled for reviews and such and only found a few FC threads which only had like two posts each (one saying reviews were mixed due to the angle of the SSV, other one said it worked fine). To those who've tried it, did only the waxes/oils from 7th Floor work well or could I order some off Amazon? Sorry if there's a better subforum, didn't find one if there is!

I think you mean "reclaimed" which has an explanation on their website. Those ones (I just ordered one) have a cosmetic flaw but were never used except to test them. Is that worth tge risk for you? When mine arrives Ill post pics. But for 113$ shipped Id take a Betty Boop version for all I care.
