I like it. I tried it and it worked amazingly. ill post a pic later but I got a 20% pull on a single squish... but the thing is that it just looks cool as fuck dripping out like it used to drip off a razor scraping warm bho.... nostalgic it was.
:mmmm:

I actually started pressing it while the plates were at room temp and then turned on the heat. that way there was alot of compression already applied before the parchment was warm preventing alot of the deformation I usually see and it kept the flowers from spreading out alot like often noted with rehydrated flowers.

the heaters peaked at 240°f but it actually collects better because lower temp stuff pushes out first followed by the higher temp stuff.

Very nice!

Sorry if this has been covered, but when I first saw the video I was seeing something new for the first time.

Is this burrito tech? It looks like an oversized parchment used with decent tonnage press in order to guide the rosin away from the heat source. Which I suppose effectively does something similar.

I guess I thought burrito tech was parchment folded in a way that the rosin flows either to both open sides or one open side "enchilada" style (because the other side is shut to force output in one direction). However, what you are showing looks like a large parchment folded over once like normal, which I guess I'll just call a taco to match the rest of the terminology theme lol.

Any ideas what type of actual press is used in the rufiocraft video?

@farscaper sorry if you've mentioned it before, but what type of press are you running in that video?

Little more info:
The "pink swirls" side should NOT be used : The coating is not durable and WILL contaminate the raw materials and the finished product.
The solid "Purple" side has not shown any degradation nor evidence of damage or colour transfer.
The mat conducts heat VERY well , shatter and goo release easily with a dabber tool and clean up with ISO and a vapertowel is a breeze.

TLDR: Only use the solid purple side.

Cheers

Hey folks,
Does anyone have any information on this mat from ikea?
monstrad-oven-baking-mat-pink__0192366_PE347043_S4.JPG

It looks to be of the same construction as the other "SAFE" silicon baking ware they sell.

I plan to cut one up and press with it (in place of parchment) and use another as a non-stick work surface.

Thanks

How are you doing the ' burrito ' tech ?

By pre-folding the parchment to allow bigger
oozing exits ?

rufiocraft uses a pneumatic type press I believe... someone correct me if im wrong.

I am using just a light duty pony vice with a hair irons plates and heaters jbwelded to the jaws.

my whole setup brand new would be like $60 or so.

anyway... I cheated with burrito tech really by leaving the ends open... so I guess im using more like a taco tech lol.

the key to making it ooze like that is simple enough though... or at least it seemed as such...

the folded side ofcthe parchment should stay inside the plates so that just 1 open end faces out. this forces all the rosin forward .. although I left the ends open on my try....

the thing I will note about thus is that ive tried something similar with plates already at temp and it didnt work well... in fact thats the only time I experienced a blowout.... it seems to me this burrito or taco tech worked better starting with a cooler temp... I compressed the flowers 80-90% cold and then kicked the heat on and slowly increased pressure as much as I could.

keeping the parchment open on the open side was also key... usually we just see the paper folded over and closed but I held the paper open so it would build up... I also tilted my vice so thd open side was slightly pointed down... aiding in the flow.

this is a great tech for rectangular plates. if I had round plates it would perhaps be less necessary... but then again....

I made little rectangular parchment pouches, with one long side facing outward from my plates. I packed the pouches with prepressee flowers, so that the only way to flow was outward.

I then used a larger piece of parchment as my collection paper. This larger piece contained my burrito package and extended well past my plates.

All in all, I am going to keep playing around with this concept, because of nothing else, collection and pressing times are much reduced. #needmoreflowers

Sorry if I'm retreading old ground but I did a quick search and wasn't able to find what I was looking for...

For any who have gone the bar clamp (Irwin XP600 for example) + hair straightener elements + jbweld route, is the insulating material for the plates to the clamp necessary? I don't have access to any woodworking materials so that's where I'm coming from with that question.

Also, for those who have done a similar setup, what sorts of yields were you getting?

I understand the larger presses will definitely enable the highest yields and starting material qty per press, but I'm just curious as to the actual yields gained from going the clamp route to either an arbor or hydraulic type press.

I used this press type for a while, I found since it was plastic it started melting after the first press so I added the wood insulators. I liked it a lot as a setup, but I have back issues and really jacked myself up a few times trying to get every bit of pressure on it lol. I tried mounting it vertically, with the slider bar in a slotted base and a rod through the hole in the end (if that makes sense ;) ). That left the pump trigger pointing up, so I stuck a 1' extension bar on it to add leverage. I was getting good results, but I'm happier now with a $4 iron from the thrift store and a $17 bench vise from Harbor Freight. No DIY on the current rig at all, just a shitty 2" iron sitting horizontally in 1" vise jaws, looks dumb as hell but pulls 15-20% with 0 effort. I'll make it better later, too busy vaping rosin lol....

VERY Curious about this... I have all my chips and rarely do a second press. Please expound on this good sir. I was planning on grinding them up and running them through the mflb, but this sounds much more interesting

WARNING: I have been far from scientific, which can bring about unexpected rides when it comes to edibles. Proceed with caution.

I have a mason jar that I just toss my chips into (and my abv). To this I have added enough everclear to keep chips submerged. Every few days I shake the jar. Every couple of weeks I will strain out a few ml's and either fill gelcaps for immediate use or mix 1-1.5ml with shot of jagger and bombs away.

You can further reduce this strained mixture down with heat for more concentrated dosing. Basically, this is just an offshoot of the green dragon recipe found here on FC.

@GuyLeDuche Thanks for sharing that. Pretty helpful info.

Also, I've heard of all sorts of creative ways to use the left over chips.. However, I've just been throwing them in bulk into the grinder once or twice and then smoking them. Seems to be working well for me.

I do have to sort of 'massage' the chip joint once rolled so that it has the normal consistency of a joint but then for the most part it works. It works with less effort if you mix the ground chips with a little ground bud.

I know that suggests an inefficient extraction, which it is because I am only getting 10-14% at 290(F?) using classic he-man grip and body weight lean, but if you feel there are actives left in your chips, it might be worth knowing you can still smoke them with a bit of effort.

At some point I'll have my chips tested, but at this point my tech is so low that its not too useful for me to actually test at this time.

Dang it , I don't eat Mexican !
So I'm friggin lost ... jk

I think the burrito method will work better with the
high end tech presses . They can compress hard enuf
to force it out one way quickly . But for my diy cheapo set-up
I want the ' less travel route ' for my rosin to squish out .
More of a circular pattern , coming out from all sides .

I'm pretty sure I saw someone do this in one of the
vids posted . But when squishing , I also hold my
straightener sideways , so it flows north/south .
Then during , I would fold/bend the hanging excess parchment
back and forth ( not fast ), and I will see the rosin ooze out to the cold
parchment paper .

I've not heard back from my friend on smoking the rosin
chips yet . But I'm thinking about making some qwiso with them .
UGH !
Using Solvents !!
WTF !!!
How did I get so Jaded ...

Has anyone tried a "walking" press? Fold parchment so three sides are enclosed, one side open. Take the rear side and press just the rear half inch or so. back it up another half inch and press again (so one inch has been pressed total). Keep walking like this until the front of the puck is reached.

The idea came from thinking about a steam roller as the ultimate pressing tech. Walking the press down the puck should direct the oil flow to the open end a little better than full compression in one pressing does. Maybe increase the pressure a bit for each subsequent press. I bet you get nominally better yields at the expense of first press/second press purity.

Sorry to derail the parchment folding tech convo but I just had to share.

They should be here in a few days

@Joel W. went above and beyond my expectations for these new H press jaws. Thank you sir!!

Carry on...

Very cool. Question for you regarding heat transfer. Are you going to stick a piece of wood in the top pipe to stop the press from touching the plate (so it's just metal on metal contact at the screws)? And a wood block under the bottom plate stand? Or are you skipping it and going straight metal on metal? Just curious thanks!

**EDIT: Never mind, just visited Joe's jaws thread and saw the full picture. Don't think I can delete post. :(

No worries! Yep, I'll be doing wood insulators. I think the wood is required because if it isn't used, the heat just transfers from the plates to the surrounding metal and it never gets up to temp (at least it doesn't if using 60w soldering irons for your heaters)

Since it took me awhile to figure out myself, here's the difference between the popular "Mexican style" teks:

Enchilada Tech:
Bud or hash placed in pouch or screen, then placed in a folded parchment paper with 2 exposed ends, then placed onto the press which is also wrapped in parchment which will be used for collection. Rosin will pour out either side of the press plates during the squish.

Burrito Tech:
Same thing except folded parchment only has 1 exposed end and rosin will only pour out one side of the press plates.

This video gives a better picture of the setup inside:

Yep, that is what I am doing, but with a parchment burrito pouch. From the IG videos I've seen, it looks like the pros are pre-packing screen pouches, and then doing multiple pouches per collection paper.

I got great yeild from 4gs, and pressed and collected in 15-20 min tops on a 2" straightener. Pretty nice effiency gain from my previous nug-ata time routine.

I believe enchilada tech is the best for larger plates if the goal is to get the oil out and away from the heat as quickly as possible. With only one end open on the burrito, the oil on the closed end has further to travel instead of going straight out.

I'm finally getting stellar, consistent results with my QWET process but I did a wash yesterday (Tuesday) and it won't be ready until at least Saturday or Sunday. I really like the idea of having "dabs on demand" and finishing on the same day I start a run, with the bonus of maybe getting a higher yield since I can't seem to get much past 15% return. The setup I have priced out now is this press from Canadian Tire for $310 and RosinWorks 3.5"x2.5" plates and quad e-nail for CAN$700 shipped. With this setup I'd get a maximum of 2285psi during the squish which should be more than enough. Once I can work out all the details and allocate the cash I think I'll pull the trigger on it.

Ran out of parchment paper yesterday and the Reynolds Wrap brand was on sale, so I picked some up. IMO this brand sucks for our purposes. It is much thinner than the Meijer generic I have been using, and it even seems to bleed rosin through a bit. Gonna give the name brand to the wife to use in the kitchen and going back to the 'cheapo' stuff that is much more resilient. Anyone else had this experience?

Herb gardener...
I haven't read all this thread so sorry I'd this has come up. I did search with no results.

Iv started making bho and qwiso which is nice but now I want to try rosin. Iv read a fair bit of this thread and leaned a fair bit, but here is my question...

Can I make rosin by using a metal record vice for the pressure, and then instead of a seperate source of heat, can I run a current through the vice, on a variable resistor, to produce the required heat. I could imbed a thermocouple or 2 in the jaws to monitor heat.

Is this possible?
Is this more hassle than using straightners?
Has this already been done?

Quilon. Search this thread for it.

Edit: I have no idea what you're talking about, I use Reynold's Genuine Parchment paper and do not get any bleeding through at all with it.

ok, so i may have had a small stoner moment. I squished a nug in the nice thick generic parchment paper, and to my horror the paper was sticky on the outside again! Finally the old rusty cog in the back of my mind clunked into place and I checked the heating plates, which still had a few beads of (very dark by now) rosin on them. I had a piece of stem pop through the thin parchment on me last night, which allowed a bit of goodness to leak through. Wiped them down with everclear and am now good to go once again. I stand by my original point of the reynolds brand being too thin for my taste, but the bleeding through might have been a wee bit of sativa based stoner extrapolation...:D:D Sorry about that one
