Rosin Technique....Easy DIY Solventless

That is very accurate, kush, being an indica will tend to press very well. It seems like sativa's don't juice as much. So I try to stick to hybrids that are heavy on the Indica side. And the specific nugs do matter, 2 Os pressed separately from the same P can have a 2-3% yield difference sometimes.

As for the Nugsmasher line, I LOVE my NS Mini.

I've used many rosin systems and still hit 25% yield with a hair straightener in a bench vise. You shouldn't expect those numbers every squish regardless of your machine but they pop up once in a while. There's nothing you can do with your hands though that will compare to cranking on it in a vise.

Some questions about bag filters please.

There are so much rosin bags at the market. What are actually the best ones regarding price-performance ratio in your opinion?

What is why the best material of bag filters for herbs a/o hash/kief?

Does it make sense regarding durability making bag filters out of ti mesh? Are there already some at the market?

From the little bit of research I have done on this. Micron bags without stitched seams like the ones low-temp plates or pure pressure sell seem to be the best. Nothing like seeing 5% going into a seemed edge, but I used to cut the stitched seams off after and press them.
About a dollar per bag seems the going rate. Cheaper would be better!

I am not sure how Ti mesh would do and I have not pressed hash, however I do have a gram or so of some laying around that I have been meaning to press so I will be looking through any other responses hoping for some guidance.

I may look into making my own bags. I think I can make them for way less than the prices I've been paying
I can get various micron filtration mesh through my workplace.

I am getting fairly consistent presses from my NugSmasher. The lowest percent return I got was 21.xx%, and the highest I have been able to get from the various strains I have has been around 27.xx%. I am using material that has been curing or already cured for about 6 months. I won't have fresh material to test for a little bit of time, so I wont know about the fresh press stuff till a bit later. I've been trying different temperatures ranging from 175f-210f, also I have been varying the pressure from 0-2500psi and doing so at different times during the squish. Each strain reacts somewhat differently, but within strains it takes me like 3-4 squishes to find the perfect temps for each strain. I tested each squish with about 3-4 grams, and I have been using the bags rated at 120u through the same company. The color of the extraction has been between light gold, to a darker yellow. Lots of aroma, and flavor. I am extremely happy with my NugSmasher so far. It's nice to be able to press and enjoy! I'm going to eventually try there other bags with high and lower micron sizes as well, but for now I have a lot of rosin to get through.. lol

I would say this is probably one of the easiest (physically) ways to produce this stuff consistently without relying on others or chemicals. As long as you have some good material to start with you will get back what you are looking for. Instant gratification is always nice!

flip the filters inside out to avoid seams. DOn't get cheap china bags, they will melt toxins into your wax.

Some rosin pressers are using coffee filters instead of bags. I seen some on u tube a while back.

I tried it and they worked ok, if you used two layers. And I was surprised the yields didn't really suffer. But the did usually break on the second press.

I just got a free gram of Ohm strain flower, it was the best my dispensary had and i got a free gram with my concentrates purchase.
Im going to press it, its dense and resiny and looks really good.

My irons lowest setting is 310f, so maybe ill heat it to 310f, let it cool for 30 seconds then press for 60 seconds hard, sound right?

Sounds about right. I have pressed at 310 with good results too just FYI. Certain buds actually seemed better at higher temps with lower pressure...some seem to love low heat with a lot of pressure. I press at lower temps always now but thats because I am trying to get a more stable end product more than anything else.

yes I noticed my first attempts at pressing at 310f for 10 or 12 seconds that the product was tasty and strong, but so sticky nearly impossible to deal with, ill try low temps and longer presses.

Collecting while halfway in the freezer or using an ice pack underneath your parchment paper with a couple pieces of papertowl or just paper inbetween to absorb some of the cold as well as any water/condensation from the ice pack can make your life a little easier when you end up with sticky end product. Don't let it get too cold though or it becomes like shatter and is harder to collect IMO.

This dude Farmer Joe Parker on Youtube has won multiple awards from squishing bubble hash with a hair straightener and unbleached coffee filters lol. Sometimes he throws it in a bench vise.

When i used straighteners and an irwin quick grip i'd squash for up to about 60 seconds.
Since getting a Nugsmasher, I'll squish for up to around 4 mins at temps below 200f.
The Nugsmasher increased my yields and quality a LOT

what model irwin did you have?

thanks, 600pds of pressure, did that seem good enuff for pressing?
Seemed ok while I was using it. I didn't get the biggest returns, but it worked and as I cannot get hold of concentrates here, it was one of my few options at the time.
Make sure you save the pucks though as there will still be a small % of goodies left trapped

hey fam, been away for a bit. ive still gotta read the last 9 pages, but wanted to post pics of my rig with the spring return on it. also upgraded the nuts on the bottom to acorn nuts to reduce any damage to whatever surface the press is on when in use.

close up of the spring return. it works fucking perfectly!

sad part is that since my last update with squish pics i have not had time nor flowers to press again. in short... no rosin... sucks. anyway, i should be sourcing some fresh headies soon so i hope to contribute with more squish pics soon.

im going to go read the 9 pages ive missed and likely edit this post with quotes n shit like that. not sure why im telling you all that last part, but yeah... im medicated. this thread is great.
Hey @2clicker ... I'm building a setup somewhat similar to yours ... with a PID controller instead of rheostat (optional to upgrade to dual), but apart from that extremely similar, and I had a couple questions for you, as my largest concern is sizing the threaded rod and plates correctly so as to make sure it is safe. I'm sure there are some formulas in regards to this but there are a number of factors such as type of steel etc. (probably easier to find the rating on the threaded rod though).

Anyways ... my main questions are:

1. What thickness of steel plate do I need to use?
2. What size of threaded rod do I need to use?
3. I see you are using a 5 ton jack but I was looking at 8 or 12 ton so that would change things a little ...

Would probably have ~5"x6" steel plates to support the jack and have room for the bolts.
I have 1/2" threaded rod already and 3/4" is readily available in town. Is 1/2" sufficient? 3/4"?

Thanks!

Dangus

Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Hey all,

Thought I'd check back in with an update...thought it'd be sooner but alas...

So I received my Nug Smasher Mini and...the plates were not correctly aligned. doh. Also after giving it a look I knew I wouldn't be happy with the size of the plates etc...what I really wanted was a step up from there...so I sent it back and went with the Lil Smasher...which I am *really* liking so far.

I've pressed a fair amount of material so far and have been impressed with the results, and glad I went with the stepped up version. (btw I found out in an amazon review that I may have been able to adjust my plates myself)

I have pressed various grades of material have gotten up to 20% return on flower as my best, but typically around 12-15%. I also had some older trim that only did about 5%...though it wasn't stored with a boveda pack...so guessing it could have done better with some more moisture content...

Overall I'm happy with it and excited to continued experimenting with it...speaking of which -

Ran across this post and thought it was pretty interesting:
SOLVENTLESS THCA/TERP SEPARATION USING THE REPRESS METHOD

anyone here try this yet?

Thanks for sharing but I don't recognize the advantage of this procedure!?

Hogni,

Dangus

Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
Not sure if I'd say an advantage, just different. Lots of talk about THCA out there as well as terps...both seem to be used in a number of different ways...but haven't seen much talk of getting there through solventless means, or processes showing it. Might not be useful for everyone, but thought it was worth posting about.

Cheers

It is interesting. I've winterized rosin to make cannacaps. And noticed a high amount of plant waxes left. Winterizing does clean up rosin. But I also loose terps due to heat.

He mentions dry butter rosin, but mine isn't really dry at all. Some of it butters, but stays sticky and not dry.

hey all. so i've been away for a while again, but wanted to check in on the site :)

since i've been gone i went and got on board the rosin train and bought a 12 ton press and a set of 3x5 plates. making rosin has been a lot of fun and I am looking forward to going back through this thread to see what I can learn from you guys! see ya round!
