Mike Gravel, former US senator for Alaska, dies at 91


Mike Gravel, a former U.S. senator from Alaska who read the Pentagon Papers into the Congressional Record and confronted Barack Obama about nuclear weapons during a later presidential run, has died. He was 91.

Gravel, who represented Alaska as a Democrat in the Senate from 1969 to 1981, died Saturday, according to his daughter, Lynne Mosier. Gravel had been living in Seaside, California, and was in failing health, said Theodore W. Johnson, a former aide.

That's not nice. I hope they pay him the respect a man of his stature deserves. His body should lie in State. At the Hague.

It is always nice when old friends can meet again though...

Edwin Edwards, roguish Louisiana governor, dies at 93

The former Louisiana governor and U.S. congressman, 93, who died July 12 of respiratory problems, was a brazen practitioner of the corrupt-politics-as-theatrics style mastered by the legendary Depression-era demagogue Huey Long.

Mr. Edwards served three full terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, four terms as governor and, starting in 2000, eight years in federal prison for racketeering, extortion and related crimes.

Bob Moses, 1960s civil rights leader who saw math as road to equality, dies at 86

Bob Moses, a towering but self-effacing leader of the civil rights movement who, after enduring beatings and jailings to register Black voters in Mississippi in the 1960s, picked up the civil rights torch 20 years later by founding the Algebra Project, a math education initiative aimed at rural and inner-city students, died July 25 at his home in Hollywood, Fla. He was 86.

Dennis Thomas, founding member of Kool & the Gang, dies aged 70

Dennis “Dee Tee” Thomas, a founding member of the long-running soul-funk band Kool & the Gang, known for such hits as Celebration and Get Down On It, has died. He was 70 years old.

He died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday in New Jersey, where he was a resident of Montclair, according to a statement from his representative.

"Trevor Moore, comedian, actor, producer, and co-founder of the sketch comedy group The Whitest Kids U Know, has died at the age of 41.

His death was confirmed by his manager, Kara Welker, in a statement issued on behalf of Moore's family.


Moore died "in a tragic accident" on Friday evening, according to the statement."

I am huge fan of Nanci Griffith. In the early 90's I belonged to a Usenet group dedicated to her music. We called ourselves "The NanciNet".
