Were getting closer and closer to our Xmas batch release :-P Matanuska awaits you, don't be scar'd!

mt2e,
A couple of weeks ago, I posted that I was having difficulty getting my screens clean with 70% iso. After switching to 91% iso, I'm still having the same problems despite soaking for several consecutive nights and then poking at the screen with a thin pin, while it's still wet, to dislodge any stuck material.

Could anyone provide some more specific cleaning suggestions? My stems are still highly usable, but require frequent cleaning as the existing stuck material seems to attract new material rather than just "blowing off clean."

Two things that I'm doing that I suspect may be contributing to my problems:

1. Much of the time, I forget to blow out the bowl after exhausting my materials. So, the ABV is left sitting in the stem, in the PD, just kind of "cooking" in there for hours or even overnight until my next session. I suspect that this is a bad habit that I should avoid, but is it really the main (perhaps only) culprit behind my cleaning woes?

2. I use kief with virtually every bowl. My ritual is to suck up some material into the stem w/ the suck-straw method, then suck a bit of kief up onto that before hitting it. Could the kief be what's gunking up and clogging individual/adjacent holes in the screen?

Two possible solutions:

1. I thought of using a compressed air can to blow out the screen, which I would do immediately after an iso bath. Good idea or useless/could potentially dislodge the screen?

2. Using a thinner needle (where would I find one?) to poke through the holes. The needles I have right now are just big enough that I can insert the tip through the hole, but just barely. This doesn't seem to clean it super effectively, though it does help a little.

I tried the advice regarding dislodging the screen and clip on purpose with a wooden skewer, pushing from the back where you place your mouth to draw. I tested this method on a "junk" stem that was chewed by my sister-in-law's dog. Although I successfully removed it, it was a little nerve-racking getting it back in place securely, and I really wouldn't want to use this method on a regular basis. It's just a little finicky.

NOW on to the good shit.

Aside from these cleaning issues (which are not hindering my enjoyment of the overall experience as much as my lengthy post would indicate), this thing works like a DREAM. Incredibly efficient in terms of material to effect ratio. Without using any kief, I get 2-4 decent hits. With kief, it's more like 5-6 at the absolute minimum. I frequently top out at 11 or more hits in a single bowl when I use kief, although the last few are pretty flavorless as the plant material is really just a kief vehicle at that point. To PD newbies who feel like they're not getting visible vapor: use some kief and blow it under a lamp (as others have stated ad nauseum). Most of the time the lamp isn't even necessary; this thing delivers big clouds, period.

And, having dogs running around and being generally careless, I've dropped the thing 2-3 feet onto hardwood flooring multiple times with no ill effects whatsoever. To be honest, I didn't research other vapes (aside from maybe the Cano and the EQ) prior to purchasing the PD (which I did research extensively), but having looked at other vapes a little more now, there's no way I would've chosen anything other than the PD.

Good observations about the unit. I've had mine for about a month and I'll echo what a lot of people have said. Make sure your material is at a proper dryness, and "blow the plug out" immediately after that last hit. I've gummed up the tubes before the stemtips and I'm guessing yours can be a challenge to clean because you don't blow the stems out at the end of their lifecycle.

Cheers

drewper,
Problem solved!

SONICARE TOOTHBRUSH.

I grabbed a stem that had been sitting in 91% iso overnight, rinsed it off with hot water, inserted the bristles of a Sonicare toothbrush so that they pushed through the screen, and turned it on (while the stem was still wet).

The bristles of the toothbrush immediately turned brown, so I knew I was on to something. After brushing it around for about a minute, the screen was basically like new. There's a tiny amount of resin still around the perimeter and by the chunkier part of the clip, so I'm doing another iso soak before I reapply the Sonicare method once more.

The bristles rinsed off nicely, so I don't see how this could ruin a toothbrush head. Sonicare heads aren't cheap however (at least $20 a pop i believe), so I suppose it would be best to use a worn-out brush head that you're no longer using for your teeth.

I suspect that any run-of-the-mill electric toothbrush would do the trick, but the Sonicare vibrates at an extremely high frequency for more effective/efficient cleaning.

EDIT: more observations while I'm in a good mood!

When we first got the PD, we were slightly disappointed as it seemed like the only way to get nice, thick vapor was to draw extremely slowly, to the point where it would be uncomfortable on the lungs. Now, it seems like we can hit it practically any way we want and still produce vapor. Whether that's a product of simply learning how to do it "correctly" to the point where it's second nature, the wood (black walnut) "breaking in" to where it holds a slightly higher temperature, or some combination, I'm not sure. At any rate, it seems impossible to fuck up at this point, even when we introduce it to friends who have no vaping experience.

Still, I hit it basically the same way every time: a couple of "primer draws" using only the muscles around my lips to get air gently flowing, followed by a slower, longer hit with my lips slightly parted, inhaling as I go. My wife typically uses the primer draws as well, followed by shorter, harder hits. She seems to get just as much vapor using her method as I do with my method.

Speaking of my wife, who combusted for over 10 years before vaping at all (the PD was her first vapor experience) - after using the PD for barely over a month, she has tried combusting with a bowl, steamroller and joint... and now finds them all disgusting, greatly preferring the PD experience for 1) taste and 2) the fact that she doesn't feel like coughing, and that it's so much nicer on her lungs. Although she was skeptical before I made the purchase, it's safe to say now that neither of us will ever combust again, at least not willingly!

The other thing I wanted to touch on again was efficiency. I understand that the PD is more efficient than basically any other vape, but I can only compare the PD to combustion since I've never used any other vape. For combusters contemplating the PD as their first vaporizer: you will pay off the price of the PD within your first ounce (given prices of roughly $400/oz where I live). My wife and I have actually exclaimed, "are we ever going to have to buy another bag?!" The PD is THAT efficient. Keep in mind, we still haven't used anything that could be considered "top-notch," since we've only had access to mids since getting the PD. Regardless, it requires a comically small amount of material to get us "where we need to be," and we're accustomed to at least two sessions per day (not *high tolerance* by any means, but we're not weekend warriors either).

So I was in this fancy glass shop yesterday when I saw these Sheldon Blacks. I couldn't resist so I picked up the little guy on the left :p

From what I've been reading on here smaller volume water pipes seem to work the best for vaping. And it's 14mm so it should work perfectly with the Purple Days

I can't wait to try it but unfortunately I didn't bring my PD home for the holidays. I'll post up some pics of it in action in a few weeks.

Never used a Sheldon piece but they look well-built.

I use a Luke Wilson Mini Beaker and the combo is pretty effing incredible. I know this bc after I plug the PD into the downstem and clear the tube, I get about two good tugs from my lungs, as if to say "hey there".

This is our last post.

Both public posts, too many to enumerate,
and behind the scenes events, on this forum,
have recently caused us to re-consider our participation on Fuck Combustion.

Sadly, we have decided to leave FC and never return.

At the same time we have had a chance to re-evaluate our
position as a vaporizer manufacturer.
Many factors went into the decision.
It is in the best interest, of our family, to pursue other avenues.

All orders, repairs and holiday contest prizes
have been shipped as promised.
All accounts are paid in full and closed.

Purple-Days Diffusers LLC is out of business.

At our personal expense Purple-Days.com will remain up,
to provide basic FAQ and troubleshooting, and a link to the
replacement transformer through 2012.

All e-mail will get an automated answer,
we will not be looking at them. We are out of business.
All US Mail and Parcels will be returned to sender by the USPS.
We are out of business.

We will not reconsider. We will never look back.

It is the right choice for us.

Cheers,
Tom and Pammy

Damn, I'm truly sorry to hear that.

Good luck to you both, Tom and Pammy. You'll be missed.

I'm sad to know that I'll never get another PD, but I'm glad to know that my current PD should last me for a long time.

:peace:

:o I'm stunned.

Thanks Tom and Pammy for all the nice things y'all have done. My PDs provide great service, as I'm sure they will for years to come.

Had lots of fun playing your contests, too. I'm sure my wife will be bummed she won't get to play another round of "dress up the PD". ;)

Have a great one.

This is a sad day and I don't understand why but it's not my business. Been away from FC for a while due to some personal shit, I posted something yesterday so I started getting email notifications again - now I see this.
What a bummer. All I can say is that Tom and Pammy have brought a lot of joy to my life for a long time and I wish them the very best.

Hello FC. This is my first post here.

Purple-Days will truly be missed.
However today is bitter sweet for me.
I gifted the first cherry PD I bought to a friend, but after thinking about it realized I should purchase another as it's so unique and may not be around forever and performs great. I didn't hesitate so I feel extremely lucky it was part of the last batch, and it just arrived while typing this post.
I'd better go and test my new walnut gripper+buffalo hide PD and take a picture :)

I suppose there is no more warranty, but I'm sure I won't need it.

Thanks again Tom and Pammy for all the hard work.
Happy Trails!
