Spentskeeper, funny you should ask. Had to travel over to Quartzsite, AZ yesterday. Our Oregon Coast laser man was going to be there and just finished a big batch of wood for us. Some of it was the new stuff, lots of Cherry, Walnut and Myrtle too. I'm sure he was writing off the mileage as he was most insistent that we come meet him. Hey that's business...

And we had a good drive over on the back road (Rte.60) cause we don't do interstate highways unless it's unavoidable, and it is sometimes. Several small (almost dead) towns on the old route. Once a highway goes in, the little businesses die. Quartzsite is a mess, millions of motor homes and the whole town reeks of flea-market. We couldn't wait to get back out in the countryside (and stop at one of those small roadside eateries that could use some biz...).

Anyway here is a picture of the new stuff. Grabbed one outta the box and put a coat of Buzz-Butter :buzz: on it. Nice but not the nicest piece. Looks pretty good, but the floro lights throw the color off. I'll post a better pic, but have tons of stuff to do today, as yesterday was pretty much lost.

Quarter Sawn Sapele.

Wikipedia say this about Sapele:
"Sapele (pronounced /s??pi?li?/),... is a large tree, Entandrophragma cylindricum, up to 45 m high (rarely 60 m) and native to tropical Africa. The leaves are deciduous in the dry season... The commercially important wood is reminiscent of mahogany, with a distinctive figure, typically applied where figure is important. It is sought after as flooring for its durability and beautiful graining. Among its more exotic uses is that in guitar manufacturing, in the top, back and sides of acoustic guitar bodies as well as the tops of electric guitar bodies, for example by well known guitar manufacturers such as Ibanez (Japan/USA), Taylor (USA), Martin (USA)...It is also used by American car maker Cadillac for interior wood trim on its vehicles...There are protected populations and felling restrictions in place..."

All our woods are sustainably harvested. :)

Our supplier pronounces it sap-ee'-lee .

Of course we will be boring and testing it, but on paper it looks like it's right in the Walnut / Cherry range.
Sapele has a density of 640 kg per cubic metre.
Black Walnut has a density per cubic meter of 660kg.

According to the laser man "this stuff is hard". We will see how it works out.

Heavy Duty paper clip, straighten it out and push through from the mouthpiece end. You can re-use them. Screens can be cut from any stainless pipe screens with household scissors.

I like the scientific name, Entandrophragma cylindricum, sounds like a pseudo-Latin description of a PD.

We have been looking for a somewhat exotic, yet sustainably harvested wood for some time. Fingers crossed for luck.

Pammy has dibs on that buttered unit. I'm not sure how many she has now. But she is our tester. She is very sensitive to temperature differences and knows what we are after. Sapele either works or not, none will be sold till we know for sure how it behaves.

BTW on screen cutting: Don't use Mom's sewing scissors, just kitchen drawer type scissors. The easiest way I have found to cut a screen circles with scissors: And please wear safety glasses, small pieces of wire may go flying... Line your scissors up with the wires and make a straight cut. Hold the cut screen up to the PD tip hole and count how many wires wide the hole is. Make the parallel cut. You have a strip one PD tip hole wide* . Now cut a square from that strip. * x * square . Then nip away at the corners to make a circle, just like art class. No, this isn't how I do it. But you can, pretty easy, with some patience.

I will definitely be ordering one after Pammy gives the green light. Very nice....

i think the circular clip that holds the heat exchanger, etc in place has come a bit loose on my walnut PD. Do i just re-set it by squeezing the clip and push down so it all fits back in place?

How do you replace the screens for the stems? I believe I asked this before. Are those clips inserted in the same way that LaunchBox assumes the other clip is inserted^^?

Launchbox, your unit was shipped with a wooden dowel holding the heat exchanger in place. The unit was also wrapped in tissue and had an instruction sheet with a picture of the tool wrapped around the unit so you couldn't miss it. That sheet is also re-prrinted in the booklet enclosed in and at the top of the box that you opened. Use those instructions and the tool to re-seat the clip. If you don't understand the instructions or have lost the tool please write us.

NYC. The clips and screens can be poked out from the mouthpiece end. The clips can be squeezed with your fingers and inserted. A 1/4" drill bit turned around the wrong way makes a good ram for screens and clips. Clips aren't required if your screen fits well.

And if it fits well, I strongly advise to try it without the clip. For me, airflow was doubled.

I use a bamboo bbq skewer to push the scree/clip out. It's thick enough to push both the clip and screen out at the same time. To put everything back together I just push the screen in and then set the clip on top of the metal chamber. Then I squeeze with my fingers from the sides to work the clip in.

I just tried removing the c-clip from one of my stems and it definitely helped improve airflow. Might want to give it a try also.

If someone could create a video tutorial for youtube on this and also basic PD maintenance such as dealing with the possible rattling issue which I know is an easy fix (if you can visualize how to do it) it would be most valuable to a spazz like me.

Hope everyone is staying warm and safe, no matter where you are!

Another great day with the PD. There's no better way to conserve than to use it! I certainly have my moments when I want to use a box style with tubing vape, but I wouldn't give up my PD for anything!

Here's a view from the window today. Set it as your wallpaper, and look at it during your PD session. It'll be like we're hanging out!

Very nice Rastamook, I too love my PD while admiring the city skyline (different city, one major one south by the looks ;) ).

Regarding the removal of the clips in the stems, I don't wanna be a thread hog and repeat my post with reference to this issue so I'll quickly mention that while airflow was increased so was the amount of particulate, something I cannot handle due to discomfort and health issues (reference post #6952, page 279).

Just thought I'd mention that I vape every day (save a weird scheduling conflict here and there) though not all day, and the PD is always right there with me, funny to think back to last year when I didn't have one (or two!), never again! :p

I didn't notice an increase in particulate matter, but then I am using the older stems which I think may have a bowl that's a bit narrower allowing for a tighter fit with the screens.

lwien, its very possible that my sensitivity to particulate matter is the issue, in either case, I have no doubt its reaching my mouth.

Regarding the older vs. newer stems, I also have two different looking types of stems (one from a PDP build and the other from a manufacturer produced PD; of course, since part of the 'build process' is made up of sanding the stems ) but I'm not sure that's what your talking about. In my case, the 'bowl' appears the same.

As long as the topic of distinct stems has been raised, I have a question for Tom....the stems from my PDP seems to have a narrower 'bore' than the ones shipped with the PD. Is this simply due to varying sanding techniques and results (yours look much nicer  )? Its hard for me to tell if this is a consequence of you having done a better job than I settled for or if the stems themselves may be a tiny different. The airflow on the ones shipped with the PD seems slightly better...

I've been using a 'shorty' (stem I cut in half at work) recently, do others like shorter stems if available?

Blaaaaah
I like using a shorter stem with my bong, but I don't think I would enjoy using the short stem without a waterpipe. It would probably be too hot for my taste.

^^^ enjoying the picture...

Bore size has always been 7/32" for the Polypropylene tubes. ID on the stainless is approx. 1/4" (actual / nominal 0.25125") with a slight neck down for the screen stop. Probably necked at around 7/32".

The through holes are done in a jig with normal drill bits, then the hole is hand reamed with a round file to remove any debris. These blanks are vacuumed and washed and vacuumed again. Then go on to Pandora Kits or to the Purple-Days workbench. Identical up to that point. I spin the tubes in a chuck for final shaping. Then they get washed again. No internal differences between them, exterior finishing is up to the Pandora Kit builder.

+++

No clips = more screen surface area exposed = more screen holes = more air (more particulates) . . . it's a trade off. The clips are there to make the screens semi-permanent. With regular cleaning they may last for years. User choice to replace screens and user choice on clips.

I only use my PD through a small Sheldon Black bubbler so I haven't noticed an increase in particles. Looking down the tube I can tell the screen has some big gaps around the edge so I don't doubt I'll have more build up in my water soon.

No way I could use a shorty stem alone. After 3 or 4 normal length stems my throat gets dry so I just use a short stem with a small bubbler.
