MagicStone Alchemy

I've been lucky enough to have both the original Odyssey and now the new Alchemy for a short while now and can offer some insight for a comparison. Let's start with size and weight. The overall length is the same when the stem is attached to the Alchemy but when removed it is noticeably smaller and easier to carry in a pocket or case. The weight is not as different in "feel" when using the vape as I would have expected . The heavy, solid soapstone is one of my favorite qualities for these vapes and the are very nice to hold. One of the bigger differences between the Odyssey and Alchemy is the acrylic mouthpiece. Though I am not usually a fan of suck stems, it does have an old school familiarity that will certainly appeal to many. I am quite sure there will be a fair number of users who will retrofit or customize stems from other makers to enhance their own experience. ( I can't wait to see some of them ).
So what about the actual performance . Well lets just start with the negatives since I'm sure there will be complaints about this type of vape. Yes it uses a butane flame lighter which for some might have a negative taste. It is not a modern precision temperature controlled device. I realise , especially within the FC community there are a great many medicinal users who rely on specific strains and temperatures to provide accurate health benefits/relief , however, there are also many who vape for pleasure. I my opinion I believe this type of vape caters to the latter.
Now for the positive. First, there are no batteries !! If you have ever been in a situation when you could not vape because of dead batteries then I need not say more... I also have a nice collection of lighters which have been collecting dust over the last few years given that the majority of my vapes are battery powered or plug-in. I really do enjoy using them and now they are again utilized.
Nostalgia is also something that is hard to convey but it can be a strong influence. I am old enough to have smoked my herb for decades before switching to vaping ( 14 years ago ). When I use one of these vapes it reminds me of an old pipe and maybe my youth and it's enjoyable. For others who might not want to quit smoking but maybe are testing out the vaping waters, it makes for an easy and familiar transition.
there is definitely a learning curve to these type of vapes, but I don't thing it is a difficult one. Modulating the force you inhale and recognizing the taste and temperature shouldn't take anyone more than a couple of bowls before they are getting good results.
As for specific differences between the Odyssey and Alchemy, well, I didn't actually find many. they performed surprisingly similar. My Alchemy probably got slightly better results with the technique I was using but I'm sure with a little adjustment it would be identical. what did surprise me was that my Odyssey which is solid soapstone seemed to get hotter in my hand. I did find I was needing to inhale longer and harder to produce vapor compared to the Alchemy and that is probably to reason but I would have thought if would also act as a better heatsink. As mentioned earlier, I don't love acrylic stems and I much preferred the mouthfeel of the solid soapstone. Despite this, I often would choose the Alchemy first simply because I was getting quicker hits with less flame time.
Admittedly I have become spoiled and jaded over the last decade with so many wonderful vapes to choose from and how wonderfully they perform. My personal collection of vapes is as diverse as possible. It is possible to get high by using a potato as a bowl if you really wanted to so why choose a vape or pipe or bong etc . Is it because you liked the look or design ? Unique or Artisan crafted vapes speak to me. I enjoy many aspects of these instruments ; the look, the feel, the details of the design are all part of the experience each time you use one of these works of art and I appreciate the time and talent of those who make them.
A bonus for these vapes is that they also worked fantastic as cooling units for some of my other vapes. I don't love hot vapor and I was able to use both Odyssey and Alchemy in this manner. they have earned a spot in my vape rota.

vapor production is fairly quick, maybe 5-6 seconds. I was able to get a decent terp hit but the fall off is a bit quicker then both conduction or convection vapes. If not careful, you can still combust but I had decent results and a nice high.

Is it harsh? Has anyone else tried this? I really want an alchemy but just want to hear more reviews. I'm already looking to shop through an unnecessary amount of premium lighters just for this vape.

this is a difficult product to review without prejudice . most FC members own or have used several or many vapes and it is extremely hard not to make comparisons. Personally, I have a sensitivity to higher temperatures and almost no tolerance for any combustion. This will certainly influence my opinion when testing a new product. Are the Odyssey and Alchemy my favorite or go to vapes ? No. But that doesn't mean I don't like them and use them. If my only criteria was getting stoned then I would save my money which I spend on vapes, use one of my old pipes and that would be the end of this story. But I DO like vapes. I like the way they look, the flavor profiles, the signature high I get with each, and more.

I have a motorcycle that is not very comfortable and a performance car that isn't great in the winter but I love them both. Yes this is what sparked my interest about this vape. Being able to use a lighter again. I have a bunch of vapes but I miss using a lighter. This vape is the first one I've seen where you can use a soft flame lighter again.

My initial goal/holy grail pursuit with MagicStone was to offer the "burning masses" (most of my friends and collleagues) a way to go smokeless - with a familiar approach that they would actually use. Between the stone and thick basket it'll take a sec to heat up to where you can really throttle it if you want. There was a nice learning curve to it but cool like a caveman!

Using pure butane is not at all a solution. Butane does indeed produce water vapor and CO2 when combusted, but that's only true when enough oxygen is introduced, which is not the case with non-torch lighters that release the butane slowly.
The yellow flame is the easy indicator, pure butane burns blue. When not enough oxygens is introduced, soot (pure, carcinogenic carbon) and carbon monoxide are produced.
I have seen users mention this issue in the Odyssey thread, but it was never addressed....
Once it is established there is some filter (even if regularly replaceable), I'll probably be getting one myself

Sorry for not seeing your post sooner, things have been hectic at MagicStone. I appreciate your asking and will give you the most forthright answer I can. First, we haven’t sanctioned any scientific research regarding trace carbon from using the butane lighter, but we absolutely understand why some vape users have real considerations as to any potential compromise of purity.
From a simple process standpoint, after the warm air from the flame is drawn through the stone intake, it passes through a stainless steel mesh filter and then the cannabis before releasing the non-combusted essence into the mouthpiece. Regarding any soot, we have run a white cotton pipe cleaner through the draw lines of Odysseys & Alchemys that have had dozens of baskets and months of use with no other cleaning, and they come out without any hint of visible soot or residue beyond a bit of green kief (which is all that builds up in the stone chamber over time. You can leave that or wipe it off occasionally.)
With this conversation in mind, I can tell you that we've had some new prototypes made with a finer double mesh filter on the basket that holds the flower (below and surrounding), and we are just testing them.
We know and appreciate that FC forum users tend to be vape devotees/experts, and we totally respect their input and experience with virtually every non-combustible cannabis device on the planet. We developed the Odyssey and Alchemy as “hybrid” instruments, knowing that the whole concept of a real-time, direct-light, stone instrument is very different with different considerations, depending on the user.
For some context:
In all of our initial research and development of MagicStone instruments, discussing the concept with virtually every demographic of cannabis user, we started with a couple of basic questions:
How do you currently use cannabis? - for people who use flower the answer was almost always, “I use a bong, a one hitter, roll joints, etc.”
When we asked those people if they had used a dried flower vaporizer, many of them had, and many of them owned one but didn’t use it.
When we asked them why they didn’t use it, the answers ran the gamut of, “I don’t like batteries”, “too much maintenance”, “too complex”, “takes too long”, “I don’t like to wait”, “I can’t get a good enough hit”…and so on.
Obviously we’re happy that our no maintenance, convection instrument that lights like a pipe, and can be used simply and whenever you want, is enabling a lot of cannabis users to eliminate most all of the bad things related to burning and inhaling smoke.
Hey, there’s some degree of compromise with any cannabis use, and what we can say is that once you have the basic technique, it's easy, and fast to get clean and tasty hits that can range from terp hits to big billowy hits without ever combusting your flower with a MagicStone instrument. It’s all a personal choice.

I love how these look! I am very interested and I think I might have discovered the HUGE advantages these have over most other portable vaporizers.

I have to travel in a few months overseas and I don't want to bring something that would break (you never know when an electronic might stop working and if the glass breaks on a butane glass vape you got nothing) or I wouldn't be able to bring back with me. This is a rare example of something that, if properly cleaned, can just go through the TSA as a smoking pipe and no risk over getting it confiscated. It isn't suspicious looking like a Dynavap or Sticky Brick or a Vapman (a much as I love all of those) so this is the perfect travel vaporizer!
