Discontinued Loto Labs Lux (formerly Evoke)

Salutations,

There's supposed to exist at least as many answers than there are questions so in the meantime i have this single question in mind: is the Evoke Vaporizer planned to operate on 9 Volts batteries? If so then why not 2, exactly?...

More specifically, is there going to be a pair of 9 Volts batteries inside?

The Evoke is the latest electronic vaporizer to grace the industry with its presence, and I sincerely mean that. From the looks of things, the Evoke (from LotoLabs) is one of the first vaporizers I’ve seen that looks to the past for design inspiration, with a wooden, hefty look to it not unlike the tobacco pipes of the olden days.

The company touts that its induction-based vaporizer is healthier than its competitors in the market, and that it will last longer and require less replacements than anything else you can find. Curious, we decided to chat with founder Neeraj Bhardwaj for a Q&A.

TechCrunch: How is the Evoke different from other vaporizers?

Neeraj Bhardwaj: I’d say there are three main ways the Evoke is different. The first way is induction. The Evoke is healthier for you. When you use the traditional “wick and coil” system, dangerous particles like formaldehyde get into your lungs.

The second difference is that our vape is designed to be beautiful and luxurious. It’s not a round, discrete pen. I, personally, don’t want to smoke out of a pen. So we built the Evoke to stand out as a luxurious vaporizing pipe, not something you have to hide.

The third way it’s unique is that it uses smart technology. It’s not about voltage anymore. It’s not about turning a dial and heating up and cooling down. It switches now to frequency and power, because the Evoke controls just how hot the system gets. It requires a smart chip, and because of that, we can control so many parts of the experience.

We want you to be able to control the heating pattern. If you’re using a special kind of shatter and need a different voltage, the Evoke can offer that. It’s almost like a hack on your own vaporizer. People that vape a lot are hobbyists in the space, and they want these kinds of controls, like the ability to change out the wick.

Eventually, we want to integrate with iOS and Android health platforms so you can monitor your THC or tobacco usage alongside your sleep, heart rate, etc. If Apple won’t accept us, we’ll build out a standalone app for usage monitoring, but hopefully we can mix it in with all your other sensors.

TC: Explain the induction heating vs. traditional wick and coil heating.

NB: Both systems start the same way. There’s a reservoir, and a wick placed in it to pull the liquid out.

With current technology, typically the wicks are made out of some fiberglass material. A resistive coil is wrapped around and in contact with the wick where a current is applied and heat is generated. This means the coil is hotter than the ideal vaping temperature, and electrical components are in contact with the liquid.

With our system, our coil is outside the airpath. It stays cool but creates magnetic fields that heat up our wick. Our wick is made of a proprietary alloy and heats evenly, putting the heat exactly where it is wanted and only where it is wanted. This makes for a cleaner tasting, altogether better vaping experience.

As far as dry herb is concerned, the induction-heated mesh heats evenly and again, is not as hot as a coil. It doesn’t stress a tiny coil over and over again, breaking it eventually.

TC: In such a crowded space, what feature or characteristic makes the winning difference for a vaporizer?

NB: One that can be tailored to the use of the owner. One that doesn’t break all the time or burn or constantly require replacing. One that isn’t so difficult to clean. Honestly, a vaporizer that just works well and lasts long should do very well on the market because right now it doesn’t really exist.

TC: Why did you choose to deviate so much from the usual design of most vaporizers?

NB: We really wanted to look to the past for this. Most people are focusing on carbon fiber wraps and other more futuristic materials. We wanted something more luxurious. Something that’s a statement in your house and in your hands. We want you to be excited to tell people about your vaporizer.

We chose something wooden and ergonomic, and something that doesn’t roll off of a table.

TC: Who is your ideal customer?

NB: We have two ideal customers. One is anyone seeking relief from pain with medicinal marijuana, especially because waxes and liquids are really where we shine. Most vaporizers work the same for dry herb, but for oils and waxes, we can really provide a healthier and more luxurious experience around that.

Our other ideal customer is someone who has been vaping for a long time and is sick and tired of replacing parts. Our customers are going to be the connoisseurs of the space.

Right now, we have three separate models on the campaign for e-liquids, waxes, and dry herb. But we’re working right now to create bullets or capsules that can be swapped out with the existing Evoke model. Users can then refill those capsules and swap them out depending on what substance they’re vaping.

TC: Why did you choose to get into this space?

NB: My mom was diagnosed with cancer and started vaping marijuana to handle the pain. I got into the process and realized that most of the vaporizers out there were always breaking and burning and I just wanted something better for myself, so I decided to build it.

TC: If there was no Evoke, what vaporizer would you use?

NB: The vapes I use today are the cheapest ones I can find, as I got tired of my expensive ones breaking:

eLiquid – Nemesis Clone (battery) with an Aero Tank (atomizer).

Oils/Wax – Nemesis Clone (battery) with the e-skillet or v-hit attachment.

Dry herb – Davinci Ascent

Honestly....

they should stop lying and spreading false information. I have been following this thread from day one, and evermore get the feeling somebody is trying to pull one on us here...

I mean, no working prototype as of yet, lots of bells and tinkles that do not have shit to do with vaping, but they can already tell you for sure it will be the best, healthier, and so on...

Then simple questions here get ignored, like for instance my question what the difference with conduction will be if the heated screen is in direct contact with the material.

We do not even have a rendering of the internals, airpath, and so on, nothing but some nice computer images that anybody nowadays can create.

Sorry if this seems like a rant a bit, but my personal feeling is this is starting to smell fishy. I wish it was all true, and in a way still hope they pull this off, but I feel the chances they will are slim. And the strategy they are using now, simply spreading false facts and bashing other companies is a shame.

Maybe we can download some ethics with the bleutooth? :p

If we have nothing but renderings, what's the guy holding in his hand in that picture?
Perhaps it's a non-working model, but it's certainly more than a rendering.

Salutations TEpicToton,

...the feeling somebody is trying to pull one on us here...

Esentially speaking i must admit i got the same impression when early in June Loto Labs wanted "to chat", with Egzoset (...), about financial support i suppose! Then came that "smart" technology advertisement using Albert Einstein, then Focus Product Design was "hired" to assist with development and now there's a proprietary alloy (read "smart"), hopefully the Curie type, finally!...

10.gif

We waited patiently for June to arrive, this is July and it's about to pass while we still got to wonder.

Consequenly there's no alternative but Wait & See, i guess!!

106.gif

...lots of bells and tinkles...

Hummm... Perhaps the Evoke team already has a good idea which chip can be used so i figure the multiple features result from that "smart" scenario (provided there's sufficient space left for a battery, for starters).

...simple questions here get ignored...

Déjà Vu, i foresee those are most likely to pile up actually!!

...not even have a rendering...

Lets start with a plan. How about power transmission efficiency vs magnetic coupling vs shielding vs frequency vs the rest?!... At least we'd get some clues if only Google Patents could fing anything about the alledged "intellectual property" mentioned before.

...wish it was all true, and in a way still hope...

Same here!

...UNTIL I saw who they have hired. Uptoke? Really? I think my IH oil vape just turned into a charity raffle ticket . . .

To be fair, they aren't responisble for improving the performance so much as they are refining the design from an engineering and production perspective. Huge difference. Its not necessarily their job to make it perform better. They can produce a better design, but that doesn't put them on the hook for the performance.. I feel that rests solely with the creator.

they should stop lying...
If your going to throw accusations, can you provide ANYTHING to back it up? Think they lied or are being dishonest? PROVE IT or your just blowing smoke. Back that shit up, or Back That Shit Up!

Sorry if this seems like a rant a bit...
Are you sorry? Seems like you maybe you aren't so much. Its seems like you have unrealistic expectations of what the company should provide you. You say you want it to succeed - so you make accusations and criticize them, as opposed to supporting them.

Has the campaign gone smoothly? Probably not. But for us to expect anything different...from this industry...is just dumb and not based in reality. The choice is completely yours to support them or not...but to be so very critical of a company at an obviously early stage of its existance isn't helping.

I don't think its right to expect the company to lay out all their internals at this point. A functional prototype makes all the difference in the world, but to expect them to lay it all out for us is just sill unrealistic. Have you not seen the multitudes of chinese crap knockoffs on this very site?

Give em a break, or give em a chance, or give em some support. Verbal or financial. Or don't! But to tear them down as they are trying to build it up...its hard to feel that your agenda is to push this industry forward. Loto seems to be trying to do that. Are you?

Oef...how about hitting your 'real' vape for a sec and relax....mean I did not call anybody dumb or anything...

Read the article, then tell me again they are not, well lets make it sounds nicer then it is, bending reality a bit... (hehe Yet another feature for the bleutooth?)

Sorry for using sarcasm and being taken seriously :p

No I do not want this industry to grow or whatever....thats why I will from now on believe manufacturers with blue eyes and swallow all the marketing crap they throw at me...

Been let on a leach for too many times before...a critical voice is one of the side effects. Sorry if that pisses you of, that is not my intention...

I actually think I raised some fair points here, lets agree to disagree and move on with our jokes, euh lives;)

They do speak as if the Evoke is an existing product and not a concept with no prototype.
Is that being truthful ?
Are statements like "the evoke IS healthier for you ..." not lies when they haven't built one yet.

I do know it's just marketing talk and all just sayin' it ain't true ... yet.

Formaldehyde? I mean...

Again, would buy it tomorrow if it al works out.

prototype - a first, typical or preliminary model of something, especially a machine, from which other forms are developed or copied.

Would the proof of concepts videos be considered a prelim model of a machine, of which other forms are developed? I feel yes, but that is up to perspective/interpretation.

They have shown on multiple occasions the concept more than works. So the crux of the biscuit comes down to miniaturization. A hurdle, no doubt, overcome by stacks of cash appropriately spent. Lets hope they make those decisions well!

Lol ya.... For some reason I find it hard to believe that W9 tech gear has formaldehyde coming from it:lol::rofl:

It's simply impossible for them to claim that it's healthier... Or am I allowed to say that I'm the creator of a 300mph street car that makes lambos embarrassed?? I just gotta get to building it real quick...

I've been following along here as I've recently supported Loto Labs on their endeavor. I was also curious about the "intellectual property" to which was previously referred. I was able to track down one patent, that appears to have little to do with the topic here, accrediting Neeraj. What was more interesting was another name attached to the same patent.

I am assuming Mahesh Bhardwaj is Neeraj's father, and Founder & CTO of The Ultran Group. Mahesh has a number of patents to his credit, many of which may be of some interest to the person's in this discussion.

For the more inclined, I invite you to dig in and report your findings.

Cheers.

UDATE: The information on The Ultran Group's site might provide additional insight.

From the way they describe it, it seems like it's just supposed to be an improvement on e-cig vaporizers, because of constantly referencing 'wick and coil.' But then they go off and say something more general like 'there's no reliable,.efficient vaporizer on the market' which is misleading and incorrect (although, of course, technically subjective). So, what I can't fully understand, is if they're trying to market this against the pax, ascent, pnp, solo, etc. or just pens.

Runs into a big issue with loose leaf, too. Saying your product works better with herb than a wick and coil e-cig is like a chef saying his meal is better than servingI you a pile of horse shit. The only thing you can compare to with any measure of quality are legit herb vaporizers like those I previously listed. Maybe their target demographic are 'bros' whose snoop dogg pens 'aren't working.'

Salutations Starless,

I was able to track down one patent...

Same here except i also found (variations on a theme):

"Non-contact ultrasound materials systems and measurement techniques"
(WO 2007025022)

What was more interesting was another name attached... ...I invite you to dig in and report your findings.

Well, since this apparently refers to acoustics for the most part - and more specifically ultrasounds - then i'm starting to expect almost anything, even what might have come out of the BatCave!

...an improvement on e-cig vaporizers...

But then what e-Cig wick operates from a 9 Volts battery?...

Or was it just a coincidence!?

Also i'm wondering what's next should a 3rd-party partner like Focus Product Design happen to fail...

I have to admit they got me, I'm the latest addition to the flock. I contributed to the campaign. TBH I saw a 70% price cut for the oils/wax Evoke early bird contribution and pulled the trigger after I read everything. Then I remembered, well hey I'll go check to see what FC has to say about it. I read the TC article, they're implementing a metal alloy screen to be heated by the induction coil, which will then vaporize plant material/extract.

Here is a direct quote from their campaign page, followed by a direct quote from the TC interview.

"...all the heat goes into the plant material rather than warming up a mass of ceramic..."
"...the induction-heated mesh heats evenly..." "...putting the heat exactly where it is wanted and only where it is wanted."

This inconsistency alone would be enough for me to request a refund. What really got me was the claim that most "wicks are made out of some fiberglass material" and when you use them "particles like formaldehyde get into your lungs." What a desperate attempt to lure funding from the misinformed.

Well, lessons learning I guess. Needless to say, full refund requested.

Salutations Fulvic,

...they got me... ... ...the heat goes...

Honestly, if there's actually a customized alloy then the Evoke team may surprize us.

This inconsistency...

Whatever. Consider having to heat up a wire heating up a ceramic body in turn raising temperature in a pair of concentric metal tubes which finally heat up fresh air, as in the HerbalAire v2.1 Heat-Exchanger. Now, tell me! How is Induction Heating supposed to be any worse??

So, how bad would that be to inject heat directly into a bullet's metal shell, possibly this type of structure exactly:

5km4r4.jpg

That's aluminium "foam" but it could be many other things i suppose... Just like a custom-made Curie alloy that can never reach the point of combustion, ideally.

So, how worse would that be?...

5.gif

This inconsistency...

I dunno. Suppose it's true somebody has been "hired" to work on a special metal screen, perhaps bullet-shaped for the customer's own convenience, and most above all, specially formulated with dame Curie in mind, evidently.

How about the implications? Starting with something as familiar to me as the "crucible", to speak HA language, euh... Let see. In the Evoke i guess a screen-bullet and the heater element are the exact same object forming a vaporisation chamber, simultaneously... That would be like the HA heat-exchanger and crucible got fused and miniaturized, whatever! Which for a portable application sounds like a good plan IMHO.

:D

So, how more direct does one need the heat to be?!

On top of that, possibly with the benefit of thermostatic regulation near "the Curie point". E.G. combustion can be garanteed not to ever occur, never. If my hopes are going to become reality...

Euh... How much better does it get?
106.gif
What inconsistency?...

Hummm... Hardly an aspect i'd choose to question here and at this time anyway!!

...enough for me to request a refund...

That's a topic i'll pass since i didn't "adhere" myself, initially.

I have been using ecigs for years and have been on the portable concentrate ride since up techs omicron cartridges. Over this time many advancements to improve ecigs and portables concentrate pens have come a long way but still have a long way to go. Some of the units I have tried over the years probably had some very questionable materials in them including the mystery visible vaper from brand new omicron carts when they first came out. So my panties don't get in much of a wad when I hear comments about unhealthy consequences of past and even present vaporizers because I have no doubt I have inhaled some nasty shit from these things and I certainly like to avoid that.

I personally don't mind putting $80 to a new concept in the hopes of a better vape and if it is good looking and ergonomic all the better. I have no doubt I will be waiting a very long time before this vape may be a reality but the vape world has taught me a great deal of patience when getting on board for new vapes. The hardest part will be remembering I even ordered this vape, lol.

Sure seems to me if what he's saying isn't accurate that the manufacture would come here and clear things up.

edit: Before anyone says he's busy and probably doesn't have time I refuse to believe that he couldn't come and make a quick 3 minute post that would be EXTREMELY beneficial to his new product.
