Monk Debate

The monks do be debatin’
Edit - oops my battery calc is wrong because I was using 21700, not 20700. So the volume is actually 33% larger. Basically the same energy density. I am still not crazy about the bigger size though. What do other people think?

With a portable more battery life is always nice, but at the same time so is the size of it in the pocket and the hand. Since the battery is swappable I think the size considerations should win out over the battery capacity consideration, unless you can accommodate a 20700 without significantly changing the size of the whole device.

Hi Marc,

I have a couple of your earlier vapes, 3 & 4, but decided that FW5 was just not my cuppa.

Now, FW 6 on the other hand?! Definitely has caught my eye! Always attracted to most handcrafted wooden vapes!

I'm particularly bonin' on that wooden screw! Given its tiny size I'm guessing you'll have those available as spare/backup parts?

I'll be watchin'!

p.s. - the squeeze action of FW6 vis a vis someone with arthritis in his/her hands...your comments please?

I am hesitating on this because I have tons of 18650 but if it's like the fw5 that needs dedicated (not used with other vapes or mods) batteries to work optimally ( @firewood is it similar on this point ? ) that doesn't count. If it doesn't change the overall dimension a lot and gives better capacity... Idk

As for the smell, the minus for me is not so much people beeing able to smell the stashed weed but the vape staying smelly even without weed not beeing able to clean it completely. But I can get over this and use some other vape for "risky" travelling. The risk is mostly trained dogs, quite rare but happened to a couple of friends : you stash your weed airtight but they smell some remains somewhere in your clothes for example.

I hadn't really thought about it and I think I'd be hesitant to consider it due to the larger size. I calculate a 21700 to be 47% larger volume than 18650 and they only have about 33% more capacity, so seems like lower energy density at this point.

It would be hard to fit a container without some sort of modification. With modification there is definitely a bit of space to work with. However, I am not sure how anybody would be able to smell herb inside the vape but not smell the resin buildup - that stuff is pretty stinky too. Also comparing to the fw5 - the fw5 chambers are not sealed off either so I would expect smell to be similar. I definitely can't say for sure though... some people just have a bloodhound nose that acts in ways that I don't understand.
It depends how you pack the bowls and how much you cook them but I'd say easily 4 large bowls, maybe a lot more if you microdose.
The ceramic part of the vapor path is a little shorter but the glass is a little longer. I think the effect is pretty similar, not sure if I can notice a difference.

Given the batteries are hot swappable, I would personally prefer 18650 for the sake of maintaining smaller form factor. The size of the FW5 is one of the reasons why I really appreciate that vape. IMO, it has the best performance to size ratio of any of my non-butane vapes. The fact that it doesn't have much in terms of breakable parts also helps with portability so I'm really happy to see this design element included in FW6.

If performance of this vape is similar to FW5 (or better), this is going to be a hit. Not having to carry around another container for the material will be convenient and I can see how this would actually be easy to load OTG.

I would definitely prefer 18650 - for the bowl size it seems to have, 4 large bowls seems pretty nice. Also most people already have 18650s and it's much nicer to keep the small formfactor all other Firewoods have had.

I am also interested in the pressure needed to activate the mechanism, and the durability of the toggle.

That being sad, I really appreciate the engineering here, and also I hope someone makes a "cooling" tube mouthpiece for this vape :D

Mid August is almost tooooo far

You said wooden screw above but there definitely are not any screws. Maybe you were talking about the lid/loading tool? That will definitely be avaialble as a part (as will all the other parts).

Regarding arthritis - hard to say but my quess is that fw6 will be easier to use since you don't have to get your finger on the button, you can basically just squeeze it however it fit best in your hand. Again, though, I am just guessing here.

Where did you hear that fw5 need separate batteries to work well? I am not aware of this being the case.
How large is the bowl compared to a single bowl in the tray of the fw5?
The fw6 bowl is approximately 1/3 larger than fw5.

@firewood it's my experience : I maybe didn't eliminate all other factors but as I like my abv very dark, I can do this better with dedicated cells (also vtc5a 35a max discharge work better) . Cells used in mods or other vapes don't work optimally for me at very high temperatures. Maybe it's just my device. But I remember on a conversation with you before sending it back for calibration you suggested that batteries used with some other vapes could be less effective and it was indeed the case for me.

That is what firewood described as the lock switch on the previous page.

Appears to be a sliding mechanism rather than a screw.

More about the slider on p177 and 178

"The slider thing on the side has 3 positions: far left is to open/close, far right is to lock it shut for transportation, middle is to use."

Real excited about this unit!

The FW6 looks amazing and the detail of craftsmanship is really impressive, like wooden clockwork! I haven’t really been aware of the FW evolution because I’m a homeboy mostly so I’ve not paid attention to the portable category in quite a while. And although I’m very grateful to @Hjalmark for mentioning its impending arrival in another thread, it’s a little irritating that I’ve been ignorant about a device this innovative and unique.

It annoys me, not because of my ego, more to do with the fact that now he’s going to call me a “KnowNothing Dummyhead” for a year. Some cultural custom where he lives, he explained it to me when we became friends a couple years ago. If a person wins an argument or shows greater knowledge then she/he gets to call their mate this name. Hell, he’s only been calling me by my proper name for six months! Idk, I’m just trying to be culturally appropriate and respectful...:disgust:

I should add some info on how it works... As you can see there is no button like on fw5. The button is the heater, which you can see in the second pic. It is spring loaded so when you squeeze it against the bowl (by squeezing the whole unit together), your squeezing action does double duty: it activates the internal button, and also created a tight seal between heater and bowl.

Do you have to squeeze the parts together every hit?

Yes I think it's clear, it acts like a button. Seems pretty intuitive to me, it's not like there are many parts to squeeze and you already hold it in your hand.

Edit : and getting to know Marc's work with the 5 I guess it won't misfire and won't need crazy pressure to fire.

I tend to squeeze the FW5 together when i take a hit. Shores up any seals not being seated tight, and helps if an oring is ready to be replaced but I'm too lazy to do so.
