Dr Dabber Switch 2

Thanks, many times the autistic mind speak is more than people want...

On the 3dxl I am speaking from pics only, where I spy that ceramic white bowl. Have they upgraded that surface with a glazed quartz coating? If so, that's a definite health upgrade, but glossy is lossy in terms of vapor quality, if you understand the physics. Since the Switch, I haven't needed to educate myself so much on other products, apologies if I misspoke...

Thanks for the factoid on the charging, from my subsequent research, that might actually be the best implementation of the pass-through scheme. A restriction point in the new smaller design is the built-in batteries and the power hungry bowl. I kinda think the ALN insert is delayed because it's going to drop dabs per charge to a alarmingly low level, I do hope I'm wrong, but physics again...

Looks like they released a couple of firmware updates with some new features like cool candy cane and deck the halls light shows, haptic on/off, a cleaning assist mode (low heat to loosen the insert, never been an issue for me but I guess if you flood it) and who knows what else under the hood! Took about 15 minutes.

The Dr. has arrived just in time to join the crew for the holidays

I've had this a few days now and it's been a blast testing it out. I’m running the Quartz insert, and I’ve been really impressed with how it replicates the banger experience. It holds heat incredibly well, and I’ve settled in at 465°F with a delayed descent. I’ll usually do 2-3 solid hits on steady, then kill the heat for some nice clean-up hits afterward. Seems to help keep any leftover residue from baking to the insert too much with the heat retention.

I had some family over for early holiday celebrations this weekend, fired up the candy cane lights from the latest fw update thanks @biohacker for the heads up! and 440°F was a big hit with everyone who tried it.

It’s super easy to break down and clean. The magnetic carb cap feels great to use, and Dr. Dabber did an excellent job with the precision fitting of the inserts. They don’t wobble or rotate too much while cleaning with a Q-tip, which makes it almost as convenient as an eRig with an embedded coil. I’ve used other eRigs with inserts, and constantly having to remove them with tweezers to clean gets old fast. With the Switch 2, it’s a breeze.

The vape signature on this has been my favourite part. Something is calming and grounding about it that I find really comforting, almost nostalgic in a way.

I like 460-470f for the flavour/vapour performance balance, but I’d like to get a bit more vapour density here. It could be that I prefer smaller dabs, but I think a pear paired with a spinner cap could help get me closer to the density I’m looking for.

Still honeymooning but I’m really enjoying the Switch 2. I’m going back to the lab for more testing :science:

if you're looking for more flavor density, go for the sapphire as its surface is going to off-gas faster than the quartz, dosing the same dab size faster equals more density.

Honestly, for the subset of folk reading this forum, the sapphire should be included as stock and standard, with the quartz included only as an emergency replacement. Call it the "Forum Cut", available only with a forum code, maybe a small discount on the bundle so everyone feels special and such... lol

Is there any news of a polished sapphire (or SIC) on the horizon, I don't care about off-gassing faster, I just want easy to clean as I use rosin that can sometimes leave a bit behind and be hard to wipe up.

Damn, those are some sexy wig-wags! How's the cooling on the dry top?
Cooling is great, they are both more open, more flavorful and more comfortable to hit than the stock by a lot. They do lead to slightly less dense vapor though becuase of this, but i consider them very worthy upgrades. A 390 ascent dab with the dry top is pretty wildly terpy

Is this using the sapphire or quartz insert? I'm still trying to dial in my temps with both inserts, and figure out modes. I love the device, but the increased options with insert material, ascent/descent modes has lead to a lot more fiddling. I've settled around 460-470 with the quartz insert for BHO, still finding a preferred combo for rosin that provides a good ratio of flavor to vapor density.

I saw Durin Glass posted a dry cooling tower piece plus cap for his switch 2 he made, both looked awesome so I'm on the list for one of each! Will post em when they come in but I think it may be a bit, though it sounds like I'm #1 on the list!

Using sapphire. I only dab rosin, and with sapphire I like either 410 ascent or 450 descent.

That sounds incredibly delicious! I'm still using the quartz, and I'd really like to improve vapor density before I move to sapphire and dry top territory. I'm running 460 steady and id really like to tune this in for 1 hit snaps. With an instant explosion of tasty vapour. I've seen a few videos showcasing the rokulous cap spinning pearls and it looks like a beast with XL density at 440f

I'm going to try this next, I think the lowest accent I did was 440f. I've switched to running BHO instead oh LHR in the S2 as Im not a fan of the taste of the LHR after the first hit. Maybe this will change my mind

Edit: Just tried 390 accent and it was perfect for hash rosin, obviously it didn't help in the vapor explosion department but it made for a very nice smooth and flavourful session. Bone dry qtip afterwards with a golden brown hue, no pooling or darkening. I can see how this mode would shine with a dry top! This makes me want to invest in a spinner cap so much more now hahaha.

Have had my switch 2 for the better half of a week now, and my goodness is this thing a beast. Before this I had a Peak Pro v2 and a Pockety (still do, ofc), and to be perfectly blunt, it's just that much better than either of them. The flavor and potency is out of this world, and I'm loving the sapphire insert (not loving the fact that it's not polished tho... Makes it too susceptible to staining and at this time I don't really know the best way to get it like new clean.)

I also am not the biggest fan of the joystick. I think they should have went more the route of puffco joysticks because those are actually a joy to use and this one just... kinda isn't. It works fine and doesn't feel like complete ass, but it's still not great, I like that the carbcap is magnetic tho. Would also like to see some better glass in the future, the current glass is *ok*, I like the function but not the form.

But the fact that all of my gripes are related to the accessories and not the actual device is a big deal for me! Just a few minor personal tweaks and I would dare say this device is perfect for me. It'll never truly replace a quartz banger hit, but damn is it close enough imo. I'm really looking forward to seeing what comes next for the switch2!

Someone recommended adding a bit of coconut oil to the joystick and I worked really well for me. For the Sapphire cleaning @biohacker had good luck placing it in a 25mm quarts banger and torching it clean.

Not to nitpick... But damn, kinda wish there was a better way to clean it? All my other ruby/sapphire inserts are polished an easily cleanable

You could try a warm soak in some dc cleaner and a scrub with a green piece of a scotch brite pad. I only own the quartz atm and I've never had a gemstone that wasn't polished.

The stock glass is awful. Percolator holes are too small, introducing turbulence and consolidation to the vapor stream. Droplet size increases which slows absorption, increases reclaim, and leaves more sticky mess. Sight lines are horrendous, you need to stare at your chin to get the barest glimpse of the vapor flow/density, leaving you completely in the dark as to the dose you just took. It's almost painful...

Can you describe how any percolator design at all could incorporate a directional change without subsequently introducing turbulence?

Ya, was trying to distill a panoply of effects into one word. I might have further refined the turbulence term by saying "additional" or even "excessive". In answer to your question though, wider apertures and more of them will minimize the type of turbulent mixing of the vapor that induces incorporation and precipitation of the tiny droplets.

I mention that more for the sake of completeness, my greater complaint is the annoying ergonomics, but I fixed that by adding a six inch piece of clear plastic tubing to the mouthpiece. It brings the total height up to the original Switch height, which is a nice comfortable lean-in, without the Crink that comes with the stock alignment. This also allows a free and unfettered eye on the volume and density of vapor that's flowing through the glass, which is just so helpful.

What temp/mode/insert is everyone using? I'm finding it hard to dial in the sapphire cup to a point where I'm happy with the vapor production. Also feels like the sapphire cup starts tasting harsh around 450-460ish F, quartz seems smoother around that range.

For what kind of concentrate? I only vape hash rosin and ive been loving 450 descent or 410 ascent with the sapphire cup. Its starts ti get harsh on 450 steady near the end of the dab but the descent mode really fixes that problem for me.
