Well I've done my 7th burn off... I'm noticing a little less vapor than when I started. I'm going to continue with the burn offs tonight... unfortunately I will have to use combustion tonight but its better safe than sorry. I notice though, that the Mystery Vapor is only really appearing when the unit is getting really hot at 405 F, during the last few minutes of a 10 minute burn off. I wonder if I should chance 375 at this point or keep trying to burn this stuff off.

Btw I figured out why I was dizzy, i was dehydrated lol.

I still have some hope that this thing could come through. It looks like a really nifty unit so I hope I can get it working. At this point I am only seeing little bits of mystery vapor at the end of a 10 minute burn off, so it might be working! I'm sure the plastic smell was just that new shoe/new vaporizor smell.

Btw I have nothing against da vinci, I'm sure their product is grand. The online chat support on their site said to keep doing burn offs until "I don't see vapor any more" and that "It was something they should have done at the factory" and that if i sent it in, all they would do is burn offs and send it back to me so I might as well do it myself. I saved the chat logs. :)

Dear FC members,

As the designer and manufacturer of Da Vinci, I would like to address the comments regarding mystery vapor and offer this comprehensive response. The mystery vapor which few have seen is a short term purification process of an organic rock based insulation material called Mica (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mica) which if not fully 'burned in' will continue to burn off the impurities until cooked away. Because Mica sheet is an organic rock compound, the amount of dirt and sand (impurities) varies inch by inch and can leave a larger deposit in one application over another. The purpose of the Mica Sheet is to insulate the heating wires from the metal bowl (this keeps the bowl from passing electricity to any metal object you might stick in it).

We chose to use Mica sheet insulation because it is well proven in the consumer and vaporizer industry. It is used in your oven, microwave, lanterns and other vaporizers because it insulates electricity and is an organic material that is stable in high heat environments. We also feel the organic compound is a better choice than the adhesive backed synthetic insulating jackets that are also offered.

All manufacturers employ a 'burn in' process and as a result to comments on mystery vapor, we have doubled our 'burn in' time to further eliminate these impurities. This additional burn in time has curbed all issues. But if there was any remaining organic vapor, it is because we use several Mica layers wrapped around the bowl and occasionally a collection of debris may take longer to burn off.

Da Vinci is one of very few brands who actually own and operate their own dedicated manufacturing facility so I take great concern on the materials brought in and our QC processes. We are engaged with the vape community in an unending effort to raise the bar and help bring the best products to market. In the end, we are a dedicated group of like-minded souls who wake and breathe the dream of building the ultimate vaporizer and we respect your insights.

So along with these elaborate explanations, I thank you for the scrutiny. Such comments have tuned our ears and I have buried myself in 'bowl research' for the last year. The cumulation of my research has led us to develop the most advanced glass on glass portable vape (www.davincivaporizer/Ascent - coming this March) with great detail to a consistent bowl temperature and uniform heat. The pure taste will be a 'first' in the industry and with a 4 hour battery in a device smaller than the iPhone is a testament that we are listening to a committed vape community.

Thank you again for your continued support and respectful comments.

It's really cool you addressed this, because I really don't want to take my Da Vinci back because it's so sleek and awesome looking. I've done 7 burn offs so far and it looks like their may be less vapor coming out... minimal but still there. Should I keep doing burn offs? If so, how many more do you think it will take? If you think it's safe i'd be happy to smoke the Mystery Vapor, as I myself am a man of mystery :p (Plus i payed 226 for this thing lol)

The key is less visible vapor now. Like with smells, sound or light levels, it takes a large change to register with us so once you notice it's lower it's usually on the run in absolute numbers.

I don't think I recall many reporting more than say a dozen cycles, perhaps none? Any of 'the old hands' recall anyone needing more?

We're making awesome headway boys. I only saw occasional whisps that were barely visible on that last burn off. If I don't see any more Mystery vapor on the next run, i'd say we just resuscitated my Da Vinci. It's almost like CPR. Live you sob, LIVE! lol.

Edit: I ran it for 8 minutes on 405 F and not a thing came out. Boys, I say we're in business!

Now, does anyone else get the urge to take that brush out while vaping?

New problem guys... The switch on the side of the unit won't turn the LED display off. I litterally came home and it was on. Not heating up, but on. I contacted Da vinci and I'm working with them... but in the mean time, is there any quick fix to this? They said it was safe to use until we come to a resolution about it.

Edit: I vaped from the defective unit like Da Vinci said would be safe on the online chat, however now I feel kinda sick to my stomach lol. Note to self: don't use again until repaired.

The light staying on should not be a problem. I suggest to let the unit die and try again. You are safe to use it as much as you want, we will take it back and cover your warranty as long as there is no physical damage causing the defect, i.e. water damage or a drop.

It's cool bro I upgraded to the Ascent... which was totally worth it.

My replacement DV is brilliant, going like a champ. There will always be reasons to love the original DV, and looking inconspicuous is a big one. I wanted to give a shout out to the improvement of texturing the screen cap. This makes it so much easier to remove the upper screen to give it a cleaning now!

Hi folks, first post. I received my DaVinci last Saturday as an augment to my MFLB, for those times when I just want to hit a switch and start vapeing, as opposed to fiddling with the various accoutrements of the MFLB. It is my desire to vape herb using the oil cans for ease of cleaning sake, however, after 4 sessions, I'm becoming quite disappointed at my results, having a 75% failure rate with 3 sessions being essentially useless and one session being acceptable except that it took 4-5 pulls from the DaVinci to provide the relief of one pull from my MFLB. I use 0.1g very finely ground and dried herb, poured into the oilcan and capped without compressing. The pull is very hard, so I'm thinking part of my problem could just be the grind is too fine and not allowing sufficient airflow through the material. Next time I will try 0.05g ground a little more coarsely and see if a little more airspace within the oilcan will help my results.
Also, I'm having some trouble adjusting to the "always on" heating unit vs. the intermittent via battery of the MFLB. It seems to me that vapor must be created continuously with the constant heat of the DV, even between pulls. To me, if that is true, that is waste that I'm not very comfortable with, especially when, in an effective session, the DV is already going through approximately 0.07 more material than I require. (Yes I am a lightweight, one good pull does me just fine typically). As far as I can tell, the DV is functioning properly, it's just the bugs in my technique that need some refinement, I think.
I've read some of the posts on here from folks using oil cans for herb successfully, I hope that I can reach that point with this machine. I don't want to scrap the oilcan idea unless I just absolutely have to. I have dexterity issues and the oil cans just pop in and out so easily for me. One last thing...that darn little screen at the top of the vape chamber gets gunked up within one session which I'm sure is contributing to the pull issues. Has anyone just removed that screen and left it out for good?
Any other techniques out there to make these oil cans function more efficiently with ground herb?
Thanks for any help!

I actually also...have issues w/ the upper screen(s) in my daVinci...
I took em out completely and just lay a larger 5/8 screen directly over the packed bowl...the hinged lid slips exactly over it...it opens it up considerably....
Also,..if you want to keep the unit intact w/ its screens,....they're to be had 100 for like $5 not $5 for 6....

Sorry you're having troubles but they are oil cans, not herb cans. They are designed for oil, not herb, and they only do a marginal job there IMO. Some performance is possible, but you're fighting an uphill battle. I suggest you use it as designed until you figure out how it works, then refine your technique? That means fill the chamber with medium to fine ground well cured bud. Well cured. That is almost certainly what's causing the fouling, much as it can in MFLB. Keep it dry going in and it'll stay cleaner.

Don't sweat the 'always on' heating, it's temperature controlled. Vapor is evolved and condenses again awaiting your drawing it off in the next hit. It's done this way in a lot of very successful vapes. Solo, Ascent, Pinnacle, various 'stem vapes, VB, Air and a bunch I can't recall off hand are examples. Much different from many other designs.

My advice is to use it as designed, get consistent acceptable results then look to refine those. Don't go looking for the results you want, see what it has to offer?

I've skipped over the "always on" issue at this time, as that is a characteristic of this device and as such, a constant when using the DV that I must become accustomed to.

Thanks OF, I understand what you're saying but look at things a tad differently, I think. Regarding the "oil can" terminology, I used it because it was expedient and understood by anyone who owns one of these devices. The manual that came with my DV refers to them as capable of vapeing "essential oils and grinds" on page 9. It's my belief that if a company advertises its product as capable of performing a task, it had better be capable of performing said task at a functional level. This being the case, it's my job to refine my technique to allow the machine to perform optimally at the task which I wish it to perform. if it does not, or can not meet my expectations when using it as I wish to use it, then I have purchased the wrong Vape. Fortunately I have not reached that point with the DV yet.

I think my bud is pretty well cured, some of it is a year old and all of it gets a day or three in a Spanish Cedar (just my technique, but I like the results) cigar "coffin" box before grinding just to make sure as much moisture as possible is gone before grinding. After looking more closely at the fouling I've been experiencing on the screens with my DV, most is caused by very finely ground plant material coming through the hole in the oil can lids and sticking to the resin build up on the screen. I have been using a very fine grind with my MFLB with good results in that platform, however, since my last post I went with a little coarser grind which ended up being perfect to fill the oil can to below the lid with 0.05 g. material. The session with this load worked much better in the DV and I was satisfied with the results and find that I'm ok with using that much material in a single session if I'm going to achieve the same results consistently. My wish-wish preferred outcome would be to completely vape 0.03g in a single session as I think that's roughly the effective dose for me, and have the grind be coarse enough to prevent the small particles from building up on my screen. That will be my next experiment, but for now, my DV with Oil Cans for grind is, at least, functional enough for my base standards. Now is time to wring maximum performance for my application from it.:science:

Now for something completely off topic, but I must say that I am happy that it appears I have finally stumbled across a forum that is interested in performance and technique and discussion of things other than just growing your own plants. That's not an option for me right now, but it doesn't mean that I don't want to maximize the benefits of the materials and techniques that I do use. Thanks folks!

Hey FC,

I just recieved my brand-new Da Vinci vaporizer from TorontoVaporizer.ca today, and it smells strongly like burned plastic/rubber. Nothing looks wrong on the inside or outside, and it tastes like the smell as well. Has anybody else experienced this problem? How should I get rid of it?

So I took a good look around the vape and noticed some spots where there is glue (?) that shouldn't be there. First spot is on top and around the magnet inside the lid just behind where the mouthpiece screws in (1, 2). The second spot is in the very back of the secret compartment, there is glue up against the wall (1) Perhaps this is the cause of the smell?

Thanks

EDIT: Some users on reddit.com/r/vaporents think this may be a fake unit. How can I tell for sure?

Always 'burn in' a new vape (especially a portable) by heating it up and running it empty. With the DV you'll have to switch it off/on to avoid the auto shutdown, or just start it up again a few times.

There's nothing, AFAIK, that glue is used for with this model, certainly not in the areas you mention. There's nothing to glue.

Fake? Not a chance. The price is too low (I can get 2 for $134 delivered, via dhgate). There's just no point. The incidence of fake vapes, as in counterfeit, is way overblown.

Noticed the glue/epoxy on the one I have, tho not as much as on yours.

If they were manually assembled, it must be the individual touch, or lack of, which determines a fine product, or one which went south.

Would QC have passed a sloppy glue job?
QC makes, or breaks, the company product.:ugh:

You do have the option to request a warranty replacement from TV....

PS my bad @max the mouthpiece magnet looks like it's affixed with an excess of something....

Hi all!
I'm wondering does anybody know what's the procedure when you buy a Davinci with no serial number and you contact the company as requested/advised in the literature.
Do they require you to send the unit to them?
I just don't want to die from 1:1 clone fumes and would love to get this exchanged for an authentic, safe device from the original manufacturer

Then the best advice I can give is go to the davinci website and purchase a authentic one. Or buy one from the many retailers that support Fc and sell authentic vaporizers and provide wonderful service to match. Without a serial number, I am afraid you are out of luck as far as a warranty goes. Sorry

I thought this was authentic until I went to look underneath for a serial number!
I'm wondering why they say to contact them, it seemed they may have a solution of some sort for me.
Maybe I'll give them a quick email just to see if we can work this out somehow

Possibly, Da Vinci customer service was very good to me every time I had a problem. I hope that it all works out for you in the end. The authentic Davinci is a solid unit. Out of curiosity, where did you purchase it from? Just so others will not get blind sided with a clone purchase.

The numbers MAY have rubbed off, but either way, Davinci will NOT honor a warranty on a unit that wasn't supplied by an authorized dealer...hhow much did you pay for it?
