Look what I found under the Cannamas Tree for 4/20! I'm glad I left out cookies for Willie. Tomorrow or the next day I'll receive my pump. Then what? "A Squeezing of a thousand bottle-tech columns begins with the first bag" (Panama Red).

Fantastic! It found a nice home I see, enjoy your new press and let me know if you have any questions.

Anything worth doing, is worth overdoing.
I am usually experimenting until I get the flavor and consistency I like.

So the temp and pressure you extract at will affect the consistency of the rosin, like whether it becomes a shatter or a budder? Is there any pattern that you notice?

You got a stylin' work station there. Can't wait to see some presses.

Sorry for the double, but just wanted to say that I recently found great discussion on this topic on the Rosin Technique thread, so all set.

Great technique discussion over in that thread! Yes temps seem to change the consistancy or how long it may take to change, but it all comes down to the material. I had auto ultimate that would only ever be a thick honey, when pressed lower it would yield less but still be a sap. My white widow will be more stable pull and snap at 220F but budders after a couple days when pressed at 200F.

Here are my recent presses. First pic is Sour Amnesia on the left and Skywalker on the right. I was inspired by @jracerx who posted about leaving the rosin in a jar on the warm plates after the press to get some nucleation.

Those two I lowered the plate temp to 120F and let them sit, cap on, for about a half hour.

The extra low heat definitely causes some changes. You can see it especially on the one on the left. Not sure any better or worse, just different.

Second pic is Super Glue. I had a couple dabs of it tonight and was really tasty. Smells like cat piss, but tastes peppery and piney.

So thought i'd share some updates and what has worked for me based on what i have read on in this thread.

I picked up a work table for 70 dollars off amazon, really nice, and collapsable as well. Fits very well in the closet, my vape desk is outside the closet.

Today did my second and third presses.

Used up the last of some old stuff for my experimenting. The second press was abourt 1.3 grams and i used a filter bag. Small amount so couldnt really do the math to get pressure on the puck, since i didn't make a puck out of it this time, but the gauge was around 2k for the first press and 5k for the repress.

I learned do not go that high on the repress, it will tear the parchment. So maybe max 4k to 4.5k on the gauge.

Second press i did not use a bag and still same amount about 1.3 grams. This time i put it in my keif press to make a nice shape. and it works really well for these small amounts 1 to 1.5 grams, prolly could do a little more I think i agree, for small amounts like this bagless is best/easiest. First press was around 2k, and second was about 4.5k. Very little tearing on the parchment if any.

Overall got about 10% back again. I think that is pretty good for how old this stuff is. After i use up the .25 grams i got out of it i will try another strain i have that will be newer and maybe fresher. I do keep all my stuff at 62% humidity and monitor with hydrometers.

Also, I agree i think doubling up on the parchment is best. With my 2nd press, it tore the parchment that it was in, and the second parchment contained the rosin the spilled out so it didn't go to waste. The first parchment in there i used the magnets to hold it and then just slid the other parchment with puck in.

Gotta say i really like pressing and will have a lot of fun with it. The flavor is also very good, much like the first hit or two off a vaporizer and very true to the plant compared to the concentrates i have. Also, having the work table makes it much nicer compared to when i was trying to use it on a shelf. Now i just open the doors, pull out the table and plug things in and its ready to go.

O, almost forgot. Picked up a cheap thermometer at target. Checked the plates they were maybe 5ish degrees off, so pretty darn good. I also didn't have the thermometer in there real snug cause i didn't want to hurt the plates, so that could maybe contribute as well.

500 for the 10 ton bundle, 70 for the pump and gauge, and 70 for the worktable. Total, 640 for an amazing set up that will last a very long time.

Thanks again everyone and happy squishing.

EDIT: Forgot to add. For this second and third tries, i was pressing at 200 F, even the repress. Think next time i will do 200 for first press and 220 or so for a repress.

Nice. Sounds like you are on the right track.

My experience is similar to yours with doubling the parchment, especially on the repress. Nothing worse than seeing half your rosin bubbling on the plates because of a tear.

Do you mind linking to the work table you got?

No problem, picked up this one from amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001CWX26Y/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Really nice, only about 25 lbs. One point, this table's legs are not adjustable. I belive there is another version with the legs that can be adjusted for different heights.

Just pressed my first fresh pumpkin seed oil. 185°F with all the pressure i dared to give it. 10-15% return out of ground seeds. It got yellow-green-brown, translucent after a day or two. Some dust or protein did deposit at the bottom of the container.
Parchment paper is not ideal as the oil seeps through quite a bit.
Smoothest and finest tasting pumpkin seed oil I have tried up to now.
The bought one I tasted, was bitter and rancid in comparison.

Is there a value or measure of how hard the anodised aluminium in the dabpresses is?

That's a nice table @LongDraw another customer of ours has that and has recommended it highly due to the hand clamps for using pre-press molds and easy storage, price, weight, etc =)

Regarding pressure, just remember flower does well at 1000-1200 PSI at the bag, so to achieve that you can do the math to figure out how much PSI to use at the gauge for your pucks (PSI on gauge x 2.25 = total force applied / surface area of puck in sq/in = PSI at the bag)

ex: 5000 PSI on gauge x 2.25 = 11250 total pounds of force / 10sq/in puck = 1125 PSI on the bag

Pressing much over 1200 PSI at the bag is going squeeze out plant matter, you may or may not mind it, but I recommend to do your first pressing in the optimal range, and save excessive pressure for re-presses where you may not want the plant matter in your dabbable rosin.

@Sick Vape Hard Anodized 6061 aluminum can hold up to quite a bit of pressure, more than we apply for our use. There's no definitive hardness on the actual anodizing but I've read that it would be in the 60-65 Rockwell range.

I've put over 1700 PSI on a bamboo plank pressed between the plates, they were fine. The bamboo had some indentations. So long as you're not pressing anything harder than anodized aluminum the plates will be fine, so I recommend to avoid pressing anything metal between your plates.

With this exception, if you're using stainless mesh filters instead of nylon, in those instances you will likely be using hash/sift pressures which is about half the pressure needed for flower, so you won't be damaging your plates using those, just be sure to double up on the parchment when using stainless mesh and keep the pressure in the low range for hash/sift.

BTW, regarding temperatures, there may be an offset that you have to apply to the controller. There may be a little deviation, and of course the measurement device has deviation as well. A good quality k-type thermocouple taped making contact with the heated platen should give an accurate measurement.

You can go a lot lower on your pressure LongDraw, but I am curious, what does your material look like at that pressure? Are you getting shattery rosin returned? I imagine it is going to be pretty glassy.

You are definetly right about the pressure. My next press i plan to do the math to figure out the pressure at the puck. The kief press i am using produces pretty small diameter pucks, more tall then wide.

This was just experimenting, only pressed 3 times total so far. Figured even though i read the right/wrong ways, kinda wanted to play with some of the ok wrong ways to see what it would produce.

What i got from my presses is very dark, and shattery. This stuff seemed more no name type material, so the flavor of the rosin seemed pretty true to the flavor of the plant when vaped. Will be fun to try out some other strains i have, and nice i can do such small amounts as well.

One thing, I am not sure if i can tell a difference between strength of the rosin i press and the strength of the concentrates i have bought. Don't know the thc or anything else on either, but going by effects they both seem pretty strong.

EDIT: Forgot to add. That was my main reason for buying the press. Right now i have access to both concentrates and flower, but the concentrate connection could end. This way i can take a dab by producing my own without any real risks compared to some of the solvents. Plus, it seems like rosin is going to give a better taste then the concentrates which is really awesome.

Anyone interested, I found that same folding table at Costco today for $50...
The Amazon feedback on this table is not good, one good one from a DIYer that barely uses it and the rest are bad, ad says 1000lb but instructions say 400! Plastic handle breaks. hinges too, so $50 sounds about right. This is on Amazon Australia for just under $500:lmao::rofl:

Some help please, I've confused myself with too much information. Been through this thread and several other pressing threads and through multiple sellers site and still somewhat confused.

I'd appreciate it if you could answer a few questions and recommend a Dabpress bundle based on my needs.

.

I'm not going to have to press more than a gram or two of flower at a time, or 7 grams a couple times a week.

I have a half gallon of trim every two months to press at my leisure. Maybe 100 grams of grade A trim. It'd be nice to be able to do this in 15 loads of 7grams rather than 50 at 2 grams per.

Should I get a press with a pressure gauge?

.

I'm sure that I'll come up with a few more questions, any help would be appreciated.

Do you want an all-in one hydraulic press or do you have room for a shop press? There are benchtop models as well if you're curious about their size.

If you want an all-in-one hydraulic press, our bj3t33 is a great press that handles <7g of material at a time. You can probably press more hash than 7g though we suggest to keep loads to 7g or less for optimal force.

If you have room for a shop press, the dp-rp33 plates paired with a 6-ton benchtop A-frame press is a good option and affordable.

Neither of those options have gauges, and TBH a gauge is not a requirement. A gauge will help you know how much pressure you're applying, but there are plenty of rosineers going by feel and getting excellent results.

If you want a gauge, you'll definitely need to get our hr10t35v rosin press with the gauge kit and a 10-ton porta power pump, or you can buy a set of our caged plates like our dp-rp35s or dp-rp37 and pair it to an H-frame shop press like the dake b-10 or strongway #46269.

If you dont plan on pressing more than 7g at a time, 3x3" plates are all that you need. If you wanna be pressing 14-21g at a time, 3x5" plates are better suited for that.

In regards to pressing your trim. I've done it a number of times and frankly I think it's probably better time spent dry-ice sifting or ice water hash the material first then pressing that. You'll end up with a better tasting, more potent rosin than pressing the extra leaf and plant matter with the trichomes.

Thanks Psychonaut, you've been a great help.

I'm looking at these two unit's:

Dabpress dp-bj3t33 Pro All-in-One Heat Press Machine | 3x3" Anodized Heat Press Plates | 3-Ton Bottle Jack | Drip Tech Integrated... $449

best-cheap-rosin-press_grande.jpg

.

For $20 I'll probably go with the 6 ton rig so I've got room to expand. Anyone have any advice?

Does a cage for the plates, like in the 3 ton rig, make any difference?

If you're considering room to expand, the 6T unit should fill the gap, you can press twice as much material. The bj3t33 has 4 points of alignment where the bj6t35 has 2 points of alignment though both will keep aligned.

hobbess, just something for you to consider. those models like dp-bj6t35 or dp-bj3t33 where the bottle jack and lever is attached to the system, i often see the press almost tilt or fall over as you are applying pressure. unless you have it bolted down or something, i could see that being annoying as hell every time you press. check the link below and at the 3 minute mark and you can see what i'm talking about. i have the dp-hr10t35v 10-Ton press with a separate pump and i've been very happy. it is $499 (minus 5%) and you have to buy a external pump (strongway pump for $63 on amazon) but it's something to consider before buying. i think its worth it considering how often it will be used. either way, you are gonna love your new toy. good luck

For the baggers- Are you all finding much difference in yield/results from hand packing versus prepress+bottletech?

I pretty much only use the a prepress+bottletech, but the above video had me thinking about doing a hand packed filtered press.

Thank you very much for your informations!
It will hopefully prevent me from scratching or denting the plates when pressing various things. Right now I am mostly thinking of plant materials like seeds or wood that should not be a problem, but they might be contaminated with harder pieces.
