Dabpress Rosin Plates

I just tried two smaller 3-4g presses last weekend, both were Think Big which had given me a very consistent 12% yield no matter specifics.

These two were no different, but like @psychonaut , they buttered quickly @ 185F & 190F.

I've also been decarbing some rosin lately, haven't decided if it's worth the tiny work it is.....thoughts from John Q. Public?

Hi all Loving my upgrade , the press is smaller than I thought and noticeably lighter than the six ton.

The pump is big and heavy though. The pump also has more resistance at high pressure , much more than using the jack ram? But feels good to operate. I was thrown off judgement a bit as not used to hash.

so I pressed 5 grams of full spectrum bubble in 37micron double bagged , temp was 160. I expected a gush like with flower but barely any Rosin came forward .maybe should have let. It heat soak ? It Really autobudderd (see video ) It was pressed for a little longer than I wound have.

The final product is great though Although lost some terps!

The second press was more oily when pressed at 180 and folded but got a little blow out but mostly contained in the mesh. Hash Rosin is much more stable than flower Rosin!

Came out gold

Looking forward to trying out flower!

One question when I attached the pump some hydraulic fluid came out of the ram is this normal? should I watch out for this as Im worried about it draining if it’s connected/re connected all the time?

@Bunny If there was just a little hydraulic fluid that leaked when decoupling, that is normal, generally a few drops will leak out as the valves close. Leaking on the cylinder where the coupler threads in should be uninstalled, and retaped. Leaking in the coupler sounds like it's not sealing correctly. You may need to remove the fitting on the end of your hose and replace it with the included fitting.

I actually just got off the phone with a Canadian customer who had this issue. The valve on the coupler wasn't 100% compatible. When he used the release valve on the pump it wouldn't retract the ram. Luckily these couplers are designed to be paired and unpaired while under pressure, so we were able to remove the fitting on the end of the hose and replace it with the included fitting. Problem fixed

BJ6T35 presser here.
First time making Rosin, and this kit has been excellent.

Am I the only one pressing at low temps??

Grease Monkey and AK have come out beautifully at 165*, the AK the most flavorful of any press I have ever done. Yielding around 22% on AK and a whopping 30% on the Grease.

I LOVE DP!
Normally I press at 220f, and have only ever tried 200 -> 230.
I will give 165 a shot with my Grease Monkey.
It is my biggest producer, but only 15.9%.
All runs were 180sec long and no bag.
-Do you run longer or shorter, bag or no bag?

The GM was between 30 - 60 days from the day is chopped down.

Here it is a press I did last night at 220f

Not sure if it is my process or my source material, but I averaged 12% return with over 10 different strains.
Temps 200 - 230
Time 120 - 180sec
RH 58% - 65%

Pressed some Watermellon that only returned 10%, but was a dry crumble that was easy to collect and handle. Smelled up the whole basement when pressed.

Any tips to getting a drier/crumble type product?
I mainly smoke joints so this texture is easy to handle and crumble into the doob.

@jracerx nice looking rosin there! If you're pressing your rosin up to the point where it would normally darken considerably you're giving it enough pressure for yields, your pressing times look good, temps are actually on the higher end so would think you're getting the most out of it. Are these strains autoflower or photo? Some bud just don't squish too well =/ Some say pre-pressing increases yields

One thing you could do, weigh out some pucks (if you save em), do an ethanol soak, then evaporate the ethanol off and weigh the crude lol. If you get anywhere up to around 3% yield in oil you'll know that you're getting most everything out. Judging by the color, it all looks uniform so I'd say you're in the right pressure range.

Here's some pictures I wanted to share with you guys, a Canadian customer with their hr10t35v, we appreciate them allowing us to share these pictures.

@anasrzi you said your pump fitted perfectly? And you have the same as me (I think, see photo) Did you use the fitting the pump came with or the dabpress fitting? I need to check my bag of bits haven’t opened it yet.Mine worked fine but leaked when I pushed in the coupler? Resistance on the pump was more than more 6ton bottle Jack, but I imagine that’s normal ? Have a good shatterday everyone.

Hi @Bunny , nice to see you have joined the DP club :).

Yeah I had a little leak until the coupler got screwed into the ram properly, as @psychonaut has said that is totally normal but I would personally recommend once it's connected, keep it connected. This can be a pain as you have three things to keep close together at any given time : the pump, the press and the PID.

I've found a suitcase is useful for keeping everything together when not in use.

Resistance isn't something I'm overly informed about as this is my first hand press, so I just go with what the gauge is giving me as a guide. Hash (bubble or sift) I run at about 150f and press to about 1500-2000 psi on the gauge, no blow outs and good returns of oil. If there's still some tackiness on the filter bag I fold it in half or quarters and repress at a higher pressure, as by this point 90% or more of the good stuff has been pressed out.

Flowers I go for 190f, higher pressure about 4000-5000 psi, can blow out but doesn't tend to. Again can be repressed if need.

I find I get no gushing with hash at all, it does drip but it's way to thick to gush. Flowers are more gushy. Prefer to press hash overall but I find it's much more tacky and sticky, flower rosin becomes more brittle and closer to shatter.

Hope that helps mate

Cheers bro @anasrzi Thanks for your thoughts. I think @psychonaut thought it shouldn’t leak on connection? Only when taking off? Hopefully I will get a permanent Posistion to set up but not For awhile so I will check if I have another fitting with the supplied bits? Is it just a matter of screwing a fitting off and replacing it ? I didn’t have a problem when operating apart from increased resistance but that’s only in comparison to the bottle jack?

Now I Just need some top shelf flower to run! I just started 4 OG Candy Dawg Kush but that’s going to be three months away with a cure! so I will have to purchase a couple of OZ, maybe some ODV3 or marmalade love my UK orange strains! proper Sativa power, great terps and covered in resin!

I'd just keep a eye on it @Bunny an dig you can keep it completely connected at all times you shouldn't get the problem with leaking again. When I first put mine together I got a fair few drops come out while the connection wasn't made just right, been fine ever since.

Good luck doing the high end flowers, I like a bit of orange too . Going to do a small press session today using Sour Jack (sour diesel x jack herer) and Alien Triangle Kush high grade bubble hash. The SJ is from a friends trim, dried then bubbled by me, just kept the best grades and a little back for my trouble. The ATK is my first try using the press with fresh frozen bubble, again only high grades which look like sand are being pressed.

Fun afternoon for me

I have noticed the plates coming down a little angled on the bag. Is this to be expected? Here is a pic:

Is the load right on the front edge? Can you give us details on what you're pressing in this pic and the size puck?

It may not be a bad idea to replace the fitting on the end of your hose with the one supplied with your press. We're actually recommending that to rosineers who don't buy the strongway pump in USA because there are slightly different valves in the various pumps. There should be no fluid leaking when coupling the press, only decoupling.

Have fun with your pressing! I pressed out 3.5g of flower Friday morning in about 10m before work, was a nice quick squish! Still have about half of that rosin left, damn it's good  I need to break out the torch and quartz and take a sip. Been hitting my SiC halo so much lately I need a change up.

Sure. This was 2.5g flower pucked with the prepress and using a trimmed 2x4 bag ala bottle tech. The edge of the puck was maybe 1/8 inch from the front lips of the plate.

This picture was taken at the tail end of the press and I’d say the jack was cranked fairly tight.

I can take some more pics tonight as I have noticed this before. Although with nothing on the press, they align perfectly flush.

I did another press to see if I could replicate the alignment issue. I again pressed 2.5 grams using the prepress and 2x4 bag trimmed down.

The first press I situated the puck a bit closer to center away from the edge of the plates. Doing this the plates came down pretty even (see pic).

I went ahead and repressed the puck and pressed it closer to the edge. Doing this, it was definitely noticeable that the plates were coming down at an angle (see other pic).

First pic: bagged puck
2nd pic: press with puck closer to center
3rd pic: result of first press and flat puck
4th pic: repress with puck closer to edge/angled plates

@psychonaut I found the fitting for the end of the pump. Do I need to use the o rings in the bag or are they for something else?

Nope, those are for rebuilding the cylinder. Just be sure to add teflon tape back onto the hose after you remove the old fitting. Start the tape 1 thread down from the end of the hose to prevent the tape from breaking off and entering the hydraulic system like in this pic.

@anda1anda2 I have the same situation on all my rosin presses except my 3x3. When I built my first rosin press, I made the plates close like that on purpose, like a clam shell. I figured, I don't want the rosin to spread all around. Rather, I wanted it to all come out the front. So, a clam shell design was perfect for that.

Now, on my 3x3 press I do the opposite. The plates are so nice and small that the rosin can spread out all directions and it never sits on a hot plate.

If you want an even press, simply place the load in the middle of the plates.

@anda1anda2 I'll share these pictures with Roger. My gut tells me this is a combination of where the load is located on the plates and pressure being delivered on the smaller plates. I run my pucks about 1/4" in from the edge of the front plate on my 3x5" plates and don't see this, at least I've never noticed it before? I know there is a little bit of wiggle room in the pillars and linear bearings by design for smooth opening and closing of the plates.

For the time being, I agree with @Hackerman move the load closer in on the plates. You should still get gushing out the front, and a slight tilt should encourage the rosin to get off the plates if it takes a bit longer to start the flow.

Great. That makes sense. I’m going to keep playing around with different positioning and will post more results.

My last several presses have been averaging around 20% yield so I’m definitely getting very acceptable end results.

Also, I got my quick couplers from summit hydraulics, they look very nice, prompt first-class usps shipping. A bit longer in length than what we use on our press, but cheap at $18 with free shipping. Useful if you build a quick coupler gauge kit to move between pumps.
