Trying to get a jump on the affordable DIY hydraulic hand pump, hose and gauge.

I have not tested any of this yet, but putting this up here as it's as close as I've got. Will likely be ordering the bushing and adapter once I have the parts in hand to verify the fittings.

Upgrade path looks good, I'm sure people will take advantage of that offer. What about other upgrades to existing sets? Getting the BJ3T33 to sit horizontally was brought up but was perhaps missed.

Did you guys ever come up with a solution that allowed the BJ3T33 to sit horizontally? Extra stub legs to attach to the bottom legs etc? Seeing the 10ton has made me envious.

I thought about drilling new holes in the top arms to move them back but I don't think that will work because of the PID power cord getting in the way. I could also get steel stock the same dimensions as the top arms then drill and trim them to match the overhang of the top arms so everything sits flat.

The press needs to sit 90 degrees when it is dripping which means it needs to be raised up slightly. I have a great idea to resolve this problem and I am going to talk to Roger about it as soon as I get a moment.

Did @Hackerman and @dabpress.com ever spitball some solutions? I don't want to rehash an issue with a fix in the works.

@CastIronHits Bottle jacks are not designed to be used horizontally. Tilting them about the 70 degrees that the press allows is about the max you would want to go. Otherwise you face the possibility of slippage from the oil leaking into the piston cylinder..

The units with separate pumps are best for drip tech.

Plus, the tiny little 2 gram pucks that I press don't really produce enough rosin to 'drip'. I love my tiny press for pressing a day or two worth of rosin. Larger presses are probably better for pressing large loads and using drip technology.

@CastIronHits I have to echo what Hackerman said, at least that's what Roger has told us, perhaps it's for safety purposes?

I imagine you could take a wooden block like a 4x4 and prop the rear legs on it to get it more horizontal? I dont think a 90 degree angle is going to help much more than the angle it's at, the parchment paper and ripples that may get created when pressing are your biggest obsticles.

To be completely honest, my best drip tech presses were without parchment. It just runs off of the plates and personally I think it holds on to less of the oil versus the parchment, the whole trouble there is it makes a huge mess!

The upgrade path is to allow folks who have the kits that have compatible heating rod length and power in the rosin control box to power the hr10t35v plates. The bj3t33 uses rods for 5" wide platens, so that's why this unit qualifies for the upgrade path.

Alright FC peeps! I got my strongway pump (no gauge, no hose), strongway hose, and gauge+adapter. As expected, the threading on the gauge+adapter does not fit the strongway parts, so I ordered the reducer bushing and adapter from enerpac to convert this gauge+adapter from 3/8" fittings to 1/4" fittings. I am almost 100% confident this will work without issues but I wont have the enerpac parts until Friday. I will keep you all posted.

In the meantime, here's the parts. I verified the hose fits into the 1/4" NPT port for the gauge on the adapter. So unless I am just missing something, this pump should be retrofitted with a gauge on Friday and we'll have a solution for everyone, anytime, to get a gauge on a hydraulic hand pump.

Of course this is not an affordable path that most will want to consider, but I guess it's another way especially for those who do not have the strength to deliver max PSI using the hydraulic pump (many of them require up to 100 lbs of force from your arm to reach max PSI)

The downsides to a setup like this is the need for an air compressor, which are quite loud, and also using a foot pump has a degree of danger as both of your hands will be free, so one must watch their hands and fingers when operating the foot pump so not break them!

I am learning alongside a lot of you, and while that may give people some unease, knowing I'm stumbling my way through this, I'll at least be upfront with my level of expertise! 1 of 2 adapters has arrived, thanks to Amazon shipping each of these small little fittings separately The bushing is due in by EOD today so I will be building this pump, making a video while I do it, and posting the results, this evening, if no emergencies arise!

I checked the adapter, it fits the pump and the gauge, so I presume the bushing will work just as well on the other end of the gauge adapter. We are 84% of the way there

I personally recommend the Strongway pumps as they have safety features like overload protection, and the air release valve at the rear of the pump is very nice. Worst case scenario, if you are building your own pump, you can contact a hydraulic supplier like mscdirect.com or grainger.com and get just about any fittings.

I talked with Roger tonight. We are almost finished with our own 1/4" adapter tee port for a gauge to sell with our cylinder presses. That means if you build your own pump with gauge you won't need to buy those expensive reducers to pair with the more affordable consumer pumps. It'll keep the total price of your pump comparable to the strongway pump with gauge. Once that's done, no more gauge obstacles

What do you guys think about the foot pumps? The placement of the gauge would pretty much have to be on one end of the hose or the other, so on the back of the press or on the floor. I imagine one could build their own custom hose with a t adapter in the middle for the gauge

I got my dp-bj3t33 yesterday did and a few bags. I got good results with the 160 bags 3.4 in .6.2 out. The first squish yielded .4.0 at 180 for 3 min the second .2.2 at 210 2min. I also tried some shake in a 90 with not great results and a kief puck in a 45 at 160 i t mostly just made hash inside the bag. I do however get budder at 160 with small 1g unfiltered buds.

3.4 in doesn't sound right? Is this flower in the 4.0 and 2.2 yields? Did you pre-press the shake at all?

If you're getting hash inside the bag and it's not extracting outward, it sounds like the material wasn't pressed with enough pressure, or the filter wasn't packed enough. Do you have any pics you can share?

160F is really low for buds but that is awesome! I bet the flavor was really good. I have been pressing my flower between 190-200F with between 800-1500 PSI, I can get the rosin to budder while still on the press at 180F with one of my strains, it's kinda a PITA as it will crystallize and block the flow.

Yes, use this for your calculations -

PSI on gauge x 2.25 = Total pounds of force
Total pounds of force / puck sq/in = PSI

Ex. 2" round puck after pressing (3.14 sq/in)
1750 PSI on gauge x 2.25 = 3938 total pounds of force
3938 / 3.14 = 1254 PSI on puck

When using the 30mm pre-press mold and 2x4" filters for buds, your finish puck size will be slightly smaller in diameter with smaller loads (i.e. 3.5g will be around 1.75" round, while 7g will be closer to 2.0" round)

For kief I would press it like you would hash. Use a small micron filter for this, such as 37u, keep the pressure at the puck low around 600-700 PSI, go slowly when you apply pressure. Use a low temperature like 160-170F.

For bud, I would use the pre-press mold for 3.5-7g, stuff the pre-pressed puck into the filter, tuck the corners in, and cut the filter about 1" above the stuffed puck, and fold the tops like a present. I like 200F for about 2 mins. Experiment anywhere between 180-220F, go lower and higher if you want but I personally don't. I like 1000-1500 PSI at the puck. I am always mixing it up depending on what I am hoping to achieve. The 1250 PSI pressed bud makes for nice color and yields.

I've got a number of videos on my youtube channel that show the whole process of pre-pressing to pressing. If you have the time, they are around 12-20 minutes depending.

Here's one where I am using the 40mm pre-press, but the same concepts apply, I am just running more material using a larger filter, and applying more overall pressure.

BTW, I do recommend to use parchment paper, this was a test for a FC member without parchment paper...
