Just so Dab HAppy!
Was checking on dnails site and I can't find where it says just the sic dish insert on the ceramic hive base is compatible with the 2.0 cap. The halo and insert look the same to me but without the screw in piece.

Just called dnail, said the sic dish is a little smaller than halo so prob not 2.0 compatible. But said he would ask around the office.
Everything @ensabbahnur said above is dead on man. I use a qtip even for my carb cap. I do like the fork still, I just use it unattached so dab tool in one hand and carb cap in the other.

I would stop beating yourself up on this decision. Let me help you with the math. Whatever you dab in one week...figure that cost and divide it in half. Now take the cost of the Halo SIC w/ carb cap and slim series base $165. Divide $165 by half your weekly cost of dabs and you should get a number between 2-8. So in 2-8 weeks this setup pays for itself in efficiency. But it lasts forever and never needs to be upgraded. I got no reason to tell you all this other than to save you time and money in the long run. I get nothing back from DNail and don't plan on purchasing anything from them anytime soon...I am set and just trying to help others find the same balance.

Yea true, I had the 2.0 cap in my cart then found out it don't fit right on the dish/hive base. They said the 3.0 cap in the future will fit.
Only cap listing for the dish is the hive ceramic stinger...which they were out of

Thanks, yea been considering the 2.0 cap more....uhhhhhh. idk if I like the pitchfork tool, can u screw in a reg ti cap tool instead?
yep, standard threads. you can also use a qtip stick screwed into it as it will limit the heat transfer, you absolutely do not want to use it without some type of handle as it gets hot fast. Id also reccomend preheating the cap on the nail before you dab, that will mitigate any heat loss off the nail from the cap.
My experience was different. I ordered the dnail carb cap with their sic dish without the dabber because I wanted to use one of my standard chitanium dabbers. The threads were the same size but a different pitch, so I would've had to force the dhgate dabber onto the dnail cap. Luckily the good folks at dnail mistakenly(?) included the dabber anyways. I do agree with the needing a handle part. I use ~2" of silicone hose to cover the end of the dabber because it does get hot, so I am mostly prevented from using the fork part of it.

Thanks for the help, my sic dish and base just shipped. I did call back wondering if I shoulda got the sic halo and slim base set up wit 2.0 cap but they said the halo sic is NOT a torch nail. Guess I'll look for a hive cap if my 19mm ti cap don't work

Your gonna love your new SIC nail! Not sure if you have seen it yet, but DNail has a chart with torch times to guide you closer to the heat range you want.

Thanks I gotta check that, was wondering if they glow red but doubt it, it's made with what they froze Han Solo in.

The TAG dish would glow but it was kinda hard to tell sometimes but that could have just been my lighting. Never tried torching the Halo so no clue if it glows or not.

its so weird they said that, that the sic halo is not a torch nail, and you're not the first person to say they said it either........but its odd to me they have a chart literally for torching the sic halo properly, even describing a multi torch hit session with torch times and cool down times to hit the optimal dab window.

At any rate, my strong advice is ditch the torches all together, once you properly dial in the temps on your email setup, (in Alladins voice) its a whole new world!

All this is exactly why I suggesed the Halo over the one with the ceramic Hive base.

Anyone have experience with the hive carb cap? Looks like a bell with wide flanged edge and small carb hole. 2.0 cap and tool look sexy af thou.

I also couldn't find proof that the sic dish has a hole that's flush with the edges. Looks like the same size as the hive dishes that go with the base.

I think that chart is for the SiC Halo on the Hive ceramic joint?
That is the nail that they recommend for torching.

However, I torch my SiC Halo on a V1.4 base (? I think that was the version; the style that came prior to slimline) on a daily basis.
I use it as my travel set-up and it typically gets four torchings per day.
I only torch for one dab at a time with a small torch that takes 1:45 to get her up to temp, so maybe the slow heating helps.

At any rate I don't have any misgivings using it in this fashion.
Although the picture of the fractured SiC Halo posted in this thread doesn't look good.
Especially considering those pieces were likely hot as fuck when it shattered.
IIRC that person was torching it extensively.

I will come back to answer other questions asked of me later, as I am busy atm. However, and this is not directed at @ensabbahnur, who is correct in noticing the chart for torch heating a SiC halo!

FOR THE FINAL TIME:

THE SIC HALO IS A TORCH NAIL AS WELL AS AN ENAIL. THE PERSON WHOSE NAME APPEARS FIRST ON THE FUCKING PATENT TOLD ME SO!!!

I have said this so many times on FC and people just keep on ignoring it. For the information of every single person from here on in, in large, bold, underlined text for clarity:

THE SIC HALO IS ABSOLUTELY FINE TO USE WITH A TORCH.

FOR THOSE WHO INSIST ON SAYING THAT THE SIC HALO IS NOT FOR TORCH USE DESPITE MY REPEATED CLARIFICATIONS, I DIRECT YOU TO THE FOLOWING:

"NOTICE: The SiC HALO™ alone can be used with a torch, however do not torch when using with a sapphire insert." (Source: http://www.d-nail.com/nails/halo/d-nail-sic-halo)

I apologize for the extremes I've had to go to in this post to make my point clear, but I have repeatedly highlighted this on FC and it seems to keep being missed. I really must clarify that this is not a post that is singling out or admonishing anybody in particular here, I mean no ill will at all, it just astounds me that people keep communicating information which is clearly wrong and could be easily corrected by looking at existing posts here, or at d-nail's site!

I think the reason this keeps getting rehashed is because D-Nail site and staff still make claim that the Halo is not for torch use. Its not our fault @herbivore21

Even this time, it sounds like @Eatrocks actually spoke on the phone or email with DNail and was advised by DNail staff that the Halo is not to be torched regularly. Perhaps you could talk with the guys whos name is on the patent and ask him to make the corrections within DNails website and staff so we can avoid rehasing this again as until they stop telling people this, its just going to recirrculate.

It says on dnails website you can torch the SIC dish. Where does it say you can not torch it?

They may have changed it but I posted about it once before...not sure now but it was there.

First line under specifications:
  • Uses ONLY D-NAiL® Flat Coil Heaters

I do agree that the Halo is completely torchable tho. I am not disputing that it can be used as a torch nail.

1:45 torch time?!?!!
noooooooo

Yea jus checked and see that they recommend 70 second torch time on the sic halo to reach 600. Hopefully it will be less with the dish since it's a little smaller than the halo dish. But daaaamn. Quartz is like 20 seconds to glowing red.

I'm guessing the heat retention on sic is poor.

My travel torch is just quite small (Newport 5.5") so I don't think it is very powerful.
It just takes a long time to get the nail up to temp.

Yea it does say on their site it's ok to torch halo, idk kinda sounded like one guy cracked one. I've never even cracked an old school glass nail after months of getting it red hot several times daily.

I have full confidence in my bed bath and beyond torch for the dish. Btw really hoping my ti cap will fit it good since it's a tad smaller. Should be here Monday....NO MORE PUDDLES IN MY QUARTZ

Yeah the page is kinda weird. I think they mean the sic halo uses a flat coil if using an enail. It says further down the page that you can use a torch with it.

The shape of the breakage on that one looked to me like it may have been an overtightened retaining nut that was responsible. In the case of overtightening, the torching could make the nut expand to a point that it put too much pressure on the SiC.

You should never tighten the dish retaining nut on the halos too much, just get it tightened barely enough so that the dish stops spinning.

In any case it is a hasty generalization to take that isolated incident (after all, how many SiC halos have ever broken? That is one hell of a short list!) and extrapolate that this means that torching is not appropriate for all SiC halos, especially given that the product is and has always been explicitly listed as being compatible with torch use!

I have torched my SiC halo to orange hot countless times for ~4 years. I have accidentally dropped my SiC halo onto hard surfaces from heights ranging from 3-6ft about 6 times over that period, once or twice it was even hot with a heater coil attached! I have poured room temp water onto the halo when it is at dabbing temps (simply to test thermal shock after the abovementioned breakage case). It has never broken, never deteriorated and still looks like the day I bought it!

I am not suggesting that any of you guys do most of these things - but suffice to say - torching is no problem. I've also torched the hell out of my Liger SiC insert until orange hot without any damage ever. SiC is not at risk if you heat it with a butane dab torch IME.

I think the reason this keeps getting rehashed is because D-Nail site and staff still make claim that the Halo is not for torch use. Its not our fault @herbivore21

Man to me it is not at all unclear. The site explicitly says that it is no problem to use a torch with the halo. It is beyond me how people would consider "Uses ONLY D-NAiL® Flat Coil Heaters" to be a more explicit and clear instruction regarding torch use than "NOTICE: The SiC HALO™ alone can be used with a torch, however do not torch when using with a sapphire insert."

One of the claims mentions torches, the other is only speaking about coils and is clearly the more ambiguous claim when it comes to the question of torch use. :2c:

We also can't forget this text, posted at the bottom of the SiC halo store page:

"Temperature charts for both electric and torch use are available in the product images above as well as on our Science page.

For material data about SiC, check our info page HERE!"

I used to use a Blazer BigShot torch before I got my Dnail.
The BigShot is a beast, it can glow a quartz banger in 10 seconds+ 40 second cool down for perfect rips... it was efficient but I REALLY appreciate being able to simply flip the switch and set a dial

Idt they make this exact one anymore but this this will match or ouput more than a big shot, gets so loud omg lol. Runs outta tane after 9-10 heat ups. Think i got on Amazon back in 2011/12 for cheap too, in my mind just before bho got popular.....nevermind the twilight DVD, at gfs.

Hey just delete my previous post.

Got the sic today!! Hope it's normal to be stuck in the hive base after first session. The tag ti 3" dabber fits perfectly over the dish, very good seal, draw is reduced extremely when covering carb hole....I heated that sucker for a long ass time and hit a baby dab to test, it scalded on contact but still had taste, no harsh no coughs, very medicated now.

Isn't it amazing how forgiving the SiC is when you dab too hot man! Glad to hear you are enjoying that. As for the getting stuck in the ceramic base, I don't know if that is normal given that I have never owned one or the torch only SiC d-nails, is there a little claim buildup in there already perhaps?

Naw brand new, I mashed the sic in there, not tight but so it wouldn't fall out. I didn't try hard to get it out, the base was pretty hot,...gotta assume the base expanded and got a tight grip on it before cooling...I'm thinking it don't need 60+sec torch time, I'll try with a timer or something. Also the sic dish has a flush middle hole. But yeah for sure the scalding hot dabs would be nice if you had to conserve. The flavor isnt like ceramic(which I don't like, give it a food taste I'm)

Still pretty used to banger style, never had a setup like this where the cap seals so nice...only grip is the hive base rocking back and forth a little but its not going anywhere...a tag 18mm male is a lil oversized.
