I’m loving this Frankenstein! The head is the heater, the herb goes in the neck, the water goes in the tummy, and you inhale through the arm. The power cable is baked into the vaporizer, going into the back of his shirt.
Here's a video of him being tested by one of his makers: https://t.me/DeBastelbude/103
I’ve had him for a week, so here are my first impressions.
I was excited to pick this up in the 30% Black Friday sale. But when it arrived I could hear it clinking around in the packaging as I opened it. Noooooooo! The Vapbong arrived broken in two, with the legs broken off. It all looked well packaged in bubblewrap, cardboard, and custom cut foam inserts in a sturdy cardboard box.
Nooooooo! Luckily the water piece is in the stomach, and the legs are just a stand. It could be repaired! Art of Vapor gave fantastic customer support over email. They offered a full refund, to fix the unit, or to refund me most of the money and let me fix it. I was concerned about posting it again, so I fixed it myself using epoxy glue. It was easy to fix, feels strong now, and the break itself can’t be seen because the body covers it.
This is when another part of the vaporizer broke. After a couple of uses the handle to the bowl broke off as it was being inserted into the neck.
Nooooooooooo!! But I’d tasted vaporizer nirvana, I’d looked it right in it’s droopy green eyes. I was determined to find a way to repair it. @LabPong came to the rescue, suggesting I use LOCTITE EA M-121HP MEDICAL DEVICE ADHESIVE. While the glue won’t be in the air path directly, it is right next to it, so it can’t just be any kind of glue. I know the glue thing is controversial on FC. That said, the bowl is repaired and you can’t even see the crack. Art of Vapor told me they’re going to change the way they ship these types of Vapbongs to make sure they stay safe.
Awesome things about Frankenstein:
He looks amazing! It has a hand ‘painted’ feel to it, you can see the brushstrokes, the lines are not all exactly perfect. This gives it a surreal vibe, like a painting that’s come to life. There are so many great details like the metallic bolts and stitches, his swole bicep, cute little pockets, and the unimpressed expression on his face.
I’m also really impressed with how it works. It does a range of different style hits. You can do giant ball vape hits similar to an SSV43, where you do a whole bowl in two hits and it’s intense. You can also do session style hits similar to a Herborizer, where a bowl might last for a long time and be more mellow. The heater is super hot and powerful, it takes 10 mins to warm up but 30mins to properly heat soak. The ceramic bowl heat soaks as well if left in the neck. I’m sipping around 10v, and ripping at around 11.5v.
Works well with amounts from .1 to 1.5 grams. The sweet spot for big hits is .3 to .5. Any more than that and you’re stirring a lot.
The airflow is great. I imagine this Vapbong has less airflow than the other ones as it’s smaller, but it’s still very wide open.
The taste is particularly good. The only better tasting vaporizer I’ve used is the Herborizer, and not by much. The ceramic must soak in some of the flavour a bit more than the glass or some such.
It’s easy to clean. I swish a little iso in it, use a bottle brush on the downstream and mouthpiece, and then rinse with hot water. I do this at my desk to avoid damaging the electronics in the sink, and I avoid shaking the unit and moving the heater around. I clean the bowl with iso and q-tips, nice and easy. After that 5 minute clean the whole thing is sparkling and fresh. I wonder if the piece’s taste will change over time.
The ceramic feels incredibly sturdy and strong. Frankenstein is very heavy in a satisfying way. I bought felt pads for the bottom because it scratches the table when slid. I’m curious how the repaired legs and bowl will hold up over time. I have the glue ready to repair those joints again. I’m curious how the finish will age as well, I can imagine it getting a lot of chips and knocks potentially.
The loading tool matches the speckled base of the Frankenstein and works great. The bowl in this vapbong is easy to load with your fingers as well.
Weird things about Frankenstein:
He’s a pretty odd vaporizer, and has all sorts of weird little things about him. For example, the ceramic hand that sits in the arm leaves a dusty ceramic residue on the mouthpiece that you can taste unless you give it a little wipe.
The water level is hard to get exactly right. He wants about 1/4 cup, but it’s easy to put too much in and have it come up the mouthpiece. It holds such a small amount of water that it evaporates after a day and you need to refill it.
The power supply seems very basic compared with how much thought goes into the Frankenstein. But it works fine so far.
It has a hot spot over to the right of the bowl, and I can see the ceramic rod in the head is pointing towards that side. It only becomes a problem if I dial it up over 12v and pack the bowl full. I’ve managed to combust that way a couple of times. I don’t come anywhere near combusting when I have the heat dialled in right.
You don’t need to pull the bowl out completely to clear the Frankenstein, you can just just crack the bowl a tiny bit. I’m getting this technique down, where you can even feather the intake by holding the neck bolt between two of my fingers and moving the bowl tiny amounts.
Overall I love this Frankenstein. It works really well, looks amazing, it’s a lot of fun to use, and it ended up being quite a good deal. Art of Vapor’s customer service has been a pleasure to deal with. I’m curious to see how it holds up over time, it feels like slightly uncharted territory. But on first impression this thing rules!
I also enjoyed following the people who made this vaporizer on Telegram and Youtube. They're a couple of Germans living in Portugal. Here are a few photos of the Frankenstein being made, as well as some shots from their shop.
