also it could be how difficult it is to neutralize something after combustion and cleaning
I recently repurposed an old ceramic bong for vaping and I worked and worked to get the decades of combustion taste out of it. I tried every tip I came across and slowly chipped away. I finally got the lingering flavors neutralized completely with baking soda and white vinegar. Janine, I believe, recommends apple cider vinegar for regular rinses.

A word of caution: I wouldn't let it soak long with any additive you don't want to taste. Soak a few minutes, rinse, repeat if necessary. Someone here just had ISO soak into their VB and impart a taste.

Glad you have found better settings and I do appreciate the decenting opinion. I just wanted to add, even though it's been mentioned numerous times here, that if your heater were to eventually go out or your herb chamber ball were to break, both can be fixed by Collyland (albeit not for super cheap). If either of those things happened to one of mine, I wouldn't hesitate to get a repair. Also, you dont have to move the device much to change water or clean - I do all that from its home on my desk and it never changes location. That said, I agree that the VB is not for everyone and does not provide the best flavor out of my vape lineup, though I still think it is very good especially with the right settings and IMO leaps better than a Mighty.

Dazed and confused
I think all the complaints and issues have been addressed multiple times, not just in this thread but threads the upset buyer started to address just these queries.
I'm fine if some prefer the all plastic of S&B.
But I do wish comments about cheap labour in Europe and the unskilled process used by some hippies somewhere were dropped.
And it's getting tiring being accused of being a fan boy.
However, I guess some counter points are useful, if only to confirm that proper research should be done prior to investing several hundred dollars on the premium art addition of a vape.
Caveat emptor has never been more applicable.

I literally had everclear soak clean through mine and started pushing resin out through the glaze. It was pretty wild. Taste took about 2 weeks air dry for it to come out. Now I notice that the bottom gets moist just from water being in it. Even sweats a bit onto it’s stand.

Glad the flavor's coming back. Wonder how this works? Does it soak through whatever crazing there is? It should more or less be a glass surface otherwise, I think.

So glazed ceramic does not/should not impart taste...thats why most quality plates are made like that...stainless steel however, does - good example is the PAX where you can literally taste the metal with every pull...
The comparison that the pax2 has better flavour than the vapbong is theoretically not possible but fuck theory right? So I went and tried it and yea, no way that pax2 has better flavour - it literally destroys 50% of the taste and adds the metalic taste (this is a fully cleaned pax2, almost as new)
After reading the latest review from JollyGreenGiant I am ~70% sure that his unit is defective somehow - maybe the glaze is not everywhere or something? I got absolutely no pottery skills so not sure how this works except that you cover it and put it in oven...

I have literally licked the "testicle" after cleaning it and it has no taste...Then I put my tongue in the downstem after cleaning it and took a good lick and also no taste.(i smell and taste everything, and categorize and memorise different strains based on smell/taste).
Then we did another test, we took clean ceramic glazed plates and licked them - no taste, as it should be.
Then we took pieces of bread and smeared them on clean plates to see if any flavour would be changed - nothing - then we put the bread in the "testicle" and smeared it in then ate it - no taste added.
Then we left the "testicle" on the vapbong for an hour for it to heat soak from the heater then repeated the tests (thinking it must be high temps that impart the additional flavour) and still no additional tastes were noticed by us that can mask the flower flavour... I was the only one to taste the "hot air" (maybe thats from kanthal? but doesnt taste metallic at all)
We did some more testing with different flower (lavender, peppermint, diff strains of weed) with and without water to try to find what it is that makes people taste the additional flavour and pulled the air without anything in the ball (do not recommend this to anyone - not good to inhale heated air a lot in a short period of time, really dries out throat and the rest of the gang)
Only thing that I noticed as said above is that the hot air seems to have some taste (so weak that any flower we put totally destroyed that "hot air taste" and we couldn't taste it with flower inside).
Last thing we did was test it against a Firefly2+ and the FF wins hands down (vapbong with and without water cannot compare with the purity of FF2+ => literally tastes like it smells if you got the technique down). Dynavap was also in the tests but really not worth mentioning (first hit on IH gives pretty good taste but nothing close to the Vapbong)

I have the unit for a year now, am in no way a fan-boy that would defend it to justify buying it - I simply don't care about money spent as long as I am satisfied with the purchase. (and I am hard to satisfy and do much research before buying because i dont like the feel of dissapointment)

Something is fishy here - I respect other peoples opinions and experiences and did not even think to doubt the review until I saw the comparisons to other vapes.
This, as well as any unit right now is not perfect in my opinion (to have all the best characteristics in each category of all the vapes available) but for a stay-at-home desktop unit I have not seen many units that can compete with it.
Next stop - herborizer TI (cant get hot rod where I am or that would replace it probably) and testing vs vapbong

I’ve read the comments above from fanboys saying it has great flavor, etc.

Listen to these fan boys...

Calling other members fanboys is Not Nice and could earn you a warning point. Please refrain.

The ceramic imparts a very distinct “muddy” and “earthy” flavor - period. Adding strong external flavors might taste good to some, and that’s entirely their personal preference

The above five gripes are objective facts, not subjective opinions.

These two statements contradict each other. Taste is obviously subjective and you seem to know that, but here you claim it's a fact. Please refrain.

Thank you for your cooperation.

That shit is crazy!
My April Vapbong has some glaze falling off, but no leakage.
I use to soak it in iso overnight, and I always had a damp bottom
the next day but no smell.
Now I only use dish detergent, Dawn 4x, hot water and brushes
so no damp bottom anymore.
Remember these April items were delayed due to the high humidity.
Maybe they were kind of rushed? IDK

I get the damp bottom almost every time there's water in it. Never really thought anything of it really

Yeah sorry that is definitely it lol just started second guessing for a second with all the leak talk lol carry on
I doubt it’s condensation. I have a lot of ceramic in my home and nothing else will do that. “Leaking” probably isn’t the right word for me to use though! To be clear it’s not an issue for me, just something that happened.

So for example if I fill the vapbong with cold water and place it on a paper towel, if i lift it up after some time the paper towel will be damp almost. Not soaked or wet. Just damp

Weird
I was resting mine on a bamboo cutting board and a barely noticeable
damp spot was always there when I lifted the vape and looked.
I cut a piece of corrugated box as a resting pad on top of the bamboo
and now everything stays dry.
Weird

Right! In that case, yeah. Lol. I fill mine with slightly warmer than room temp water, so I guess in my case it wouldn’t be condensing. But like you say, not wet or soaking just “damp”

I’m not quite sure how it works. Ceramic is porous, I know this. But water should not be leaking through the bottom in any capacity. This is a pic of the resin coming through the sides, after I wiped a portion off because I didn’t know wtf was happening.
That's crazy. And crazed. I just did a round of google-research and it seems that yes, indeed, crazing can stain, and leak. Dishes may no longer be considered foodsafe nor water-tight (not all leak, though) after crazing. This suggests to me that ceramic bongs with crazing should not be left holding water, but rinsed and dried between uses. Also, they may be primed to pick up flavors, so watch what you put in them and for how long.

Edit: For those about to panic, I would point out that most of us and our families have had and used crazed ceramics without ill effect. It's been one of the hallmarks of human civilization (and its use one of the most common human experiences), for thousands of years. Hell, I've been using crazed bongs for decades and as you will undoubtedly observe, I remain blissfully unaffected! Strong as a (120-yr-old) ox!

@Arawfish that is pretty crazy - did you ask Collyland about it? I’d be interested to hear what they thought.

I’ve had some condensation on the bottom when using cold water. I usually use room temp distilled water though and no condensation.

Man I won't lie, as much as I love and adore my vapbong the crazing and health concerns get me a little worried sometimes. I wish I knew more about long term effects of using this piece. I mean I clean it every night when I do use it but idk

Very interesting indeed. In the pottery world “crazing” is considered to be a defect.

I now question why they would be selling bongs like this.... the amount of bacteria or microbes that must accrue in the piece over time doesn’t sit too well for me. Given that a lot of people with these don’t change the water daily.

I’ll be changing the water after every use now.

It's probably ok, bet you're doing it as right as possible. I think it would have entered the lore if it had been a real issue: after all, me and millions of other 70s kids used ceramics daily and I've never, ever heard of any ill-effects, neither in real life nor in any reading. Which is not to say it doesn't happen, but it must be rare enough that it's not identified as such.

Umm...my classic Vapbong does not ever get wet underneath (only when I spill the morning water while pouring)...no condensation, no wetness nothing - totally dry. That seems like a defect, I am confident collyland would have a warning for these kinds of things if they were aware they are happening to some of the units.
