Honestly, the Clean and Jerk Long Cycle (each rep starts with the clean, short cycle each rep starts at the rack position), with double 24s (28s, ideally but the 24s are kicking my ass at the moment).

Also I love snatching, snatches with the 24 or 28, depending how strong I am when the time comes.

That's awesome that you participated in one already!
Oh that sounds awesome!

I love kettlebells, they’re amazing for a compact but brutal workout.

It's great to see all this. I can relate to many here and their experiences 👍. Lots of shared humanity in a small world. Keep it coming.

... runners high....
By the way, that's actually a very rare phenomena and even after ~12 (?) years of running I don't think I ever experienced it. I've experienced „the man with the hammer“ a few times though. :-)

Anyway, the key especially for beginner runners is consistency, not pace, time or distance. Keep it slow, even walking breaks are totally okay, the goal is to turn the doorknob and get out for 30 or 50 or whatever minutes. I agree that you should increase your mileage slowly, try to finish your 5 miles without those „bummer phases“ before you go up to 6 or 10.
Haha. I just use it informally to mean, "the point at which I'm no longer bothered and feel like I can just cruise for a while." I don't know if I'd ever describe it as the euphoria I see people use to describe it as much as, "I feel great and this is immensely satisfying so lets keep going." Can't say I've ever heard of, "the man with the hammer."
It's my understanding the runners high is fairly common. There's an epidemic of obesity out there, but I know lots of people who talk about the runners high, and many who get it and a real kick out of long periods of exercise. Running is pretty universal, coining the term runners high. Look at how many run marathon distances, for both enjoyment and competition! 26 miles / 42 km is no joke (I can't do it). I'm not built to jog well and unfortunately, I don't get a runners high from jogging any longer. But I do get a runners high from mountain biking long distances. It's significant and great 🌠. Even my appetite goes down, of all things.

As for myself, we've had a nice early spring so far and just recently I got out on the MTB for the first three rides this year! It ended up >40 miles total (~70 km) from those three rides (over four days in a row). It was and felt awesome... and I definitely got spaced out (I hit "the wall" too). Go, go, go, pace, pace pace, rhythm, rhythm, rhythm, go, go, go. I'm so looking forward to doing a lot more exercise and mountain biking this year as spring begins and goes into the rest of riding season. The major MTB service this year (mentioned earlier) brings essentially a like-new bike performance experience again. Top notch and highly recommended.

I'm definitely visibly thinner since the holidays and my last posts here. I can tell from riding already that I'm set up better for the spring and summer than almost ever for overall physical conditioning. I look forward to catching up to the shape I ended up in last year... and hopefully surpassing it. I also hit the most difficult technical single track trails in the area here on the third ride 🎆 (#2 for cardio too)... far earlier than ever before. And my riding skills felt basically as good as where I left off last year... I'm stoked about that too :). Hope springs eternal here for a fun good year outdoors and exercising, and 2 u all 2.

It's back to cooler weather atm and I'm off the MTB until spring springs a little more ☀️. Carpe diem what you can get and cheers. Enjoy the weekend.

Edited for the Friday high, w/ spelling/grammar fixes .

Update: Viz. Getting Stoned Before or During an eBike ride. Couldn't do it last fall on my new delight. Didn't feel comfortable doing it a few weeks ago on the first decent couple of days. Today I had my longest ride yet, 3hrs. rd trip., along the Swift River on the other side of the river from the Kancamangas Highway and then partway up the Kanc from Albany Covered Bridge. Part of the Passaconaway Road along the river was gated I didn't see one person on this beautiful afternoon. Then a lovely stretch along the old gated road further up the river. So much fun. And of course I got high. A sativa in my Crafty, using dosing caps. Had a lovely sitdown by the river, raging with high water. And felt perfectly comfortable getting back in the saddle on my powerful new machine. I'm lovin' still pushing my cardio and working up a sweat going up hills, but not burning my calves or knees up. Its peddle assist, no throttle.

It's my understanding the runners high is fairly common.
It depends what you define as a runner's high, apparently it's not that much of a fixed term that I thought it was (I mostly read studies and scientific articles about it, they tend to look for very defined parameters). I just found a great take on the runner's high on the Running Channel on YouTube which tries to describe the wide range of things that can happen in our body during a run:

I personally prefer the term „flow“ for what I feel during a run. A very unique balance of effortlessness and focus.

Nice @Siebter. No prob on whatever term one uses.

Here's a recent journal article that dovetails the endocannabinoids discussion with the 'runners high' in your video.

I'm old, preferring the "runners high" term and analogy. When I get a runners high going and stop exercising that focus and 'flow' is there, but it changes into a more spacey stoney feeling. I feel myself getting a bit loopy even, as my body processes the endurance and the effort of the exercise. It really reminds me of vaping cannabis, yet more natural and focused. My body and especially legs get some synesthesia going on (tingling)... another known component of the runners high. It all ties in nicely with the recent endocannabinoid research feedback. On the topic of runners high and tingling, here's a research article that broadly ties physical tingling with the 'runners high'. Also, the bibliography references an entire book someone wrote about the runners high, lol. Check the pdf link out if interested; I had open access to the full article.

Everyone's habits and preferences are different, so each to their own and let's hear about it! I'm interested in others experiences enjoy the reads. Acknowledging my habits, I should add that ~95% of my exercising and mountain bike riding is clean of cannabis (e.g., to start with I exercise daily and only vape on the weekends). My cannabis tolerance is also low (I microdose with regular breaks) and get big effects when I vape... I can get loopy too  (it even extends to spelling and grammar issues on the forum... and sorry about that). Hence I don't vape and ride... it can be dangerous for me. Still, I can totally relate to people who enjoy cannabis/vaping as part of exercise (they're inherently complimentary).

It's great to see and read all these different and inspiring stories.

Cheers and have a great weekend all.

That video is exactly how I feel. Loved it!

I believe "my ritual" for running puts me in the best position possible to experience the runner's high/flow. It sets me up physically and mentally even before I run. Unfortunately it can be annoying to folks I run with if I don't plan accordingly because my ritual takes time to complete before running. If I'm running with someone who simply puts on their running gear and immediately takes off, I have to start my ritual about 20 to 30 minutes before their takeoff point or they get impatient waiting on me.

The important parts of my ritual are music, cannabis and stretching and I've been told by fellow runners that:
- I don't get high when I run because it mentally gets in the way of me experiencing the run and being able to concentrate/focus.
- I don't listen to music when I run because it distracts me and the beat can force me into a running rhythm my body doesn't prefer.
- I don't stretch before I run because I don't need to.
I have had good luck converting those who run/ran with me into using one or all three parts of my ritual and they stayed with it long term.

My ritual:
- I put all my running gear on. Earphones, cell phone in armband and running shoes. Prepare a fresh bowl.
- Start playing the music that matches my running goal....head banging, hard driving beat for aggressive runs, something like Phillip Phillips for comfortable runs, etc. I have multiple play lists that line up with running a certain way or distance.
- Take a hit and warm up/stretch the head, neck and shoulders. Another hit and stretch the arms and core, then the legs, etc. until your entire body AND mind is warmed up. Don't rush or strain. Let the music and the high work on you. Its more about the mind, body connection and not the physical stretching/warm up. Basically a very non-taxing stretch/warm up with deep, comfortable breathing. Think meditation with music. Physical preparation is secondary. More importantly the mind has synchronized with the music and for me, the rhythm of that music has already started to dictate some physical aspects like breathing and internal pace and I haven't even started running yet. At this point I'm high, I have a case of happy feet and my mind and body want to dance so its time to go. For those who have told me they can't get high before running because then they won't run or will feel lethargic....give it a try. What I mean by give it a try is the whole ritual. If before running... I sat on the couch and got high without the music, stretching and breathing, I might not run either.

Then there's the Pavlov's dog affect....when I have one of those days where I am scheduled to run but I'm not feeling it....I put on one of those play lists before anything else and within a couple minutes of just listening my toes are tapping, my respiration picks up and my mind and body are suggesting its a go. Ever heard a song and without thinking about it your foot starts tapping? That's how it affects my entire being before the run.

What's your ritual?

To each their own @His_Highness but I’ve found that I hate consuming before a run. Maybe it’s all in my head due to thoughts about elevated pulse/bp or I just hadn’t had enough sleep, but every time I’ve used before a run has been a miserable experience for me. Using an hour or two before hand is a little better, but I prefer to just run these days. I do enjoy cannabis before strength training though. Again, not immediately before, but it seems to help me feel and focus on the muscle groups I want to work and focus on form when I’m tired and otherwise want to jerk through the motions to say I got x number of reps in.

i'm like @gordontreeman - when i tried getting high before aerobics (NordicTrack) the clock stops moving.

my ritual is exercise first thing in the morning with a calorie deficit, but with ~20 oz of water. these days i start with 5 sets of 20 pushups and 3 sets of 30 body weight squats, with some hip twists, tilts and bends (touch floor) layered in. first nutrition after the NT is about 4 to 5 oz of 6 mixed tree nuts + a little dried fruit. i like to follow the aerobics with about 20 minutes on the BowFlex. i waited until age 65 to start with the BF - far too late for me to add much muscle mass - i have muscles only i can see, which is reward enough for the effort.

now, at 73, it takes a bit of mental discipline to get started. however, since covid-19 is a cold virus (thus attacks the respiratory system which is colder than body heat), the systemic heat rise from aerobics is my anti-viral. a little extra motivation these days.

@His_Highness what's your age?

Getting stoned before going out for a run always gave me the best runner's high.

If I am stoned, I can just get into that rhythm/movement so much more efficiently when I'm exercising, and I can just zone out of all other distractions and focus on what my body is doing in the moment.

In fact, Cannabis is the only thing that can keep me in the moment in the way I need to be to exercise efficiently. Otherwise, I get bored and find it hard to focus on what I'm doing.

I used to kayak the easy sections of the swift right along the K highway!
Great memories, even better air.
Anything that gets you outside to enjoy your particular flow is the real deal!
I was riding wave’s in Alaska when grizzly bear’s tried to steal my shit?
Bio-Bio down in CHile was kayak before touring on bike’s. Kayaking is insane during level 3 rapid’s?

But hey whatever’s your routine ?

I'm 62. I started exercising at 13 to get on the wrestling team and exercise has been a constant ever since.

Early on it was about muscle mass and looking like I could do "stuff". As I got way older it became apparent that cardio was more important for me and I changed up my strength training from weight lifting to using my own body weight - pushups, core work, different types of pull ups, etc. I could feel time catching up to me and wanted to be able to do things like climb a tree when I'm 100. Prior to making cardio my priority I would limit the time between reps to a minute as my cardio.....so even my cardio work was more anaerobic oriented back then.

Getting high before working out...If all I did was sit on a couch to get high before running..... running might never happen so I can relate. It's the ritual of melding the music with getting my mind right while getting high and warming up that makes it all work. Music is key....getting high and stretching doesn't pump me up without the music. A long run where the music stops working is like a death march for me.

And for the record....still climbing trees and stuff even if its just to piss of the wife who worries too much .....

climbing trees is fine, i guess ... just don't fall on a shoulder and sever 3 rotator cuff tendons and detach the bicep, like spouse did 4 months ago - she got sutured last wednesday and going through recovery now for the next 8 to 10 weeks.

getting old is not for the weak.

I sometimes listen to podcasts while exercising, If I'm listening to anything at all. So, people talking about interesting stuff.

Though, most of the time I prefer to just listen to my heartbeat and my footsteps and my breathing. That's that zone that the high helps me to stay in. It feels quite meditative.

And no, I don't sit on the couch and get stoned before a run. I start my run by walking for a few minutes where I take my first few hits. Then I stop every couple of miles for just a minute or so and take a hit or two in order to maintain the perfect level to keep going.

Great discussion. It's nice to see people report different experiences and preferences. Lots of great personal feedback and details across the spectrum. And while I don't do cannabis before exercising hardly ever (like many others here), from Fri through the weekends I often enjoy vaping cannabis after mountain biking. Vaping cannabis goes together well with the "runners high". I most always mountain bike in the mornings and early afternoons, so it's really groovy to go with a strong sativa after that as well 👍.

My routine is needing music when I exercise and MTB ride. Treadmill work is done early morning before eating. I often read the news on the treadmill. MTB riding is done on a light stomach. I may bring food for longer MTB rides (minimum 1 hr and can easily be 2-3 hrs).

Speaking of cycling...one of the most enjoyable cycling exercise experiences I've had was on acid.
That was an amazing three hour ride around town and trails on a fixed gear road bike.
The after-ride high once I arrived home to relax and enjoy the rest of the trip was great as well.

Oioioi, I'm not sure I could do acid while running. I did a microdosing therapy with shrooms last summer, that interacted nicely with running.

Preparation for running can be so different and I find it interesting to see different approaches. I'm hearing impaired, unfortunately my hearing aid is not sweat proof (I'm saving money for a new one that even will be able to stream music from my GPS watch), so while I'm running I'm pretty much deaf and surrounded by silence. Maybe that's why I have some cannabis before a run, it helps me not to sink too deep into that void that only I experience. I do stretch after a run, before a run I do some core exercises (and at least a 20 minute walk). I need at least 45 minutes before I leave the house, that preparation time is super key for me. It seems like most people need to jump in the cold water, sitting around watching YouTubes and vaping would make most people cancel a run I suppose. :-) I totally need that.

In the winter I always fight with the weather *before* I leave, even though I actually have no problem with cold temps. I hardly use two layers, even below freezing temps and it (almost) always works fine so I don't freeze anymore five minutes after I started running – yet there's always this survival instinct that keeps telling me to stay inside. That takes a bit of time to overcome too.

Thank God summer is about to start. I have a ton of new running gear waiting for their first session.

@Siebter - I totally get the weather fight before running. I have the same experience before running or swimming when my wife turns the AC on high. Somehow that chilliness interferes with my motivation which makes starting my pre-run ritual tougher. Once the music starts I'm good though. I dress for my runs based on where I expect my body to be about 10 minutes in and not what the start will be like. When I run with my kids and/or wife they dress for the start of the run not the majority of the run and I tell them "I'm going to wish I were you for the first 5 minutes but your going to wish you were me for the rest of the run".

Speaking of music....could you use Bluetooth ear buds for music until you get a new hearing aid? There are some really good, cheap water resistant/water proof buds on Amazon. I know nothing about hearing aid technology or the need for them so I apologize if I am butting in.

Same for me, I can’t exercise while working out at all, I just feel less motivated and less focused and give up quicker.

I love running and yesterday I tried running after vaping CBD only flower and it was a great experience

My wife just discovered the joys of CBD workouts.
I convinced her to take a few tokes of Cascadia blooms bubba 66,
and she completed her routine in record time. She felt really good and had
forgotten all about the CBD. I had to remind her..... Men!

My trainer does Zoom training sessions with me every week and she's always amazed at how much energy I have. And I notice a difference with my workouts if I have a few hits of CBD first vs if I don't...there's a definite difference.
