I realize it's borderline 'cruel and unusual' to discuss the spacers when they are not yet available to most owners and all, but that's not my intent. I'm confident they will soon be common fare (included with new units instead of the jars?). Once any issues that might come along have been addressed of course.
As is I'm getting what I think are very good results with about .10 grams. Perhaps not quite as good as with tediously packed glass flowers, but sure a bunch easier.
I first confirmed neither of my spacers had a size issue on the bottom of the bowl. Then I got a toothpick to use as a tool/handle. I have two kinds of tooth picks, Basswood and Bamboo. I picked Bamboo as the superior material (a BBQ skewer would work with some work). I picked on that had a 'bad' tip, sort of egg shaped, that is it has 'sides'. I then tried it in each of the four end holes. It two it turned freely (the holes being round), in two 'it had bumps' (the hole too was out of round). When 'part way around' the toothpick is tight enough (hard to turn) that it grips the spacer and will easily lift it clear. Even very hot. I cut the end off my second one as it was real skinny and stuck down too far otherwise. It's easy to see where it's gripping the glass.
The other spacer goes in first, cup side down. We have a flat bottom bowl, made of glass on the bottom, glazed ceramic (glass covered...) on the sides. I fill the chamber to the top with my current grind, about .10 grains. To just under the rubber lip on top. Then I press the top spacer, flat side down this time (against the bud in both cases). The combination of herb/grind I'm using and that fill level (it's fluffy) leaves the top of the upper spacer even with the top of the door when I take the (modest) pressure off. It's not packed very much at all, but the bulk of the spaces have been 'taken out'. You can shake it out, no need to dig it. At least until the heat happens.
A shorter, but IMO very satisfactory session ends with a fast end of vapor production.
At the end of the session if I can, while it's still hot and easy to deal with, I swing open the door and using my tool I stick it in the (outside) hole in the spacer, twist a bit, and lift the spacer out and set it on something safe (paper towel works). A quick stir with another toothpick in the ABV and it dumps out clean. I run the tip of the toothpick around the edge between the lower spacer (which stays in place) and the wall to prevent buildup there and blow it clean enough to load and go. If stuff starts to stick to the walls, I break off the end of the toothpick and use the wood fibers to scrub the wall. That seems to keep that aspect in check.
I then fill by bulk, it's pretty uniform but coarser than many I think. This needs to be readjusted with big changes in strain or even cure changes of course, but it's easy to get a feel for. Try filling with only enough to reach the top of the ceramic of the bowl, put the spacer on top, close the door and light the fires. And adjust fire accordingly? Anyway, my plan is to have 'springback' stay flush or below. Let the door swing free. By the time I dump the bowl and give it a quick clean and fill it up, the spacer is cool enough to touch although I typically pick it up by the toothpick and place it on top and then push down with a fingertip after I 'unthread' the tool. Hey, it can be a toy. too......
So, that's my story, at least so far. A comfortable rut to be in. Based on weight of bud added to the stash (rather than session count) I figure I'm at about two dozen bowls (coming up on 3 grams) since this test started, I just checked. When hot, the lower spacer came out with a little wiggle of the toothpick. Leaving a 'bath tub ring' that couldn't stand up to Mister Toothpick, once the gloves came off (broken wood fibers on end pushing down the wall from above chip it off easily).
Thanks for hanging in through the rambling text above. Those that have the spacers are requested to 'give it a go' and see what you think. For the rest, I guess you'll have to settle with yet more material to base daydreams on? Or class envy. 'Sorry about that Chief', as 86 would say.
Regards to all. I hope you're able to enjoy yours as much as I am mine.
