Arizer Solo

I have had three Solos. My first was ceramic, black, and worked perfectly. I purchased a second, and it had the worst "electric" smell coming off it, and the smell would not abate by heating or any other method. I contacted Arizer (there was a five day delay before I heard back from them), and they express mailed me a new SS Solo. It's also perfect. No smells and no chipping :) ; great service from Arizer. I continue to think this is one of the best portable vapes made, IMHO.

I had also been getting headaches using my Solo for a while. However, as the odor has decreased the headaches have stopped for me as well. In my case they were from off-gassing of some kind. I have a history of extreme reactions to small amounts of chemicals in the air.

But I have a family member (my dad) who gets headaches all the time from sounds nobody else can hear. He gets them from 'silent' alarms, metal detectors, a whole list of things. He has been tested, and he simply has incredibly sensitive hearing, the equivalent of someone with an order of magnitude better than 20/20 vision. That might be what is happening to darkrom. It may be worth a hearing test. If that is the case, there isn't anything Arizer can do.

Darkrom - Do other people hear the sound from yours as distinctly as you do? I hear something from mine, but it is barely detectable to my ears.

Great Scott!
Arf777 sorry I am not the one hearing my solo. I know the electronic hum they are talking about and that is probably the only issue I HAVEN'T had with my solo lol.

Ok , now I am curious as to this apparent hum issue . I have sensitive ears to begin with . I know my EQ can make high pitched noise during the heating cycle but I also know most of the time it dependent on what other electronic sources (laptop, amps, heater) are close by . For example , when my is EQ is within 6" of my laptop , I can hear it . If I have my guitar rig set up , and my EQ is sitting on the floor within 6" of the pedal board with distortion settings on , i can hear it . Not loudly , but if you listen for it you can hear it . I cant say that it has cause me headaches or discomfort though . Are you guys getting this hum/squeal even if you are no where near other electrical sources ?

I've had the solo for a few weeks now, daily use, and its been great. started out with a bit of a smell but its dissipated quite a bit. it doesnt bother me.

I have an electronics background and so like I mentioned in a previous post, Arizer is likely using a switching power supply in the solo which makes the high pitched whine thst some people here. Those power supplies use a high frequency oscillator to drive the electronics that provides the correct voltage and often that frequency is in the upper ranges of human hearing. if you can hear it, be thankful because you have good hearing! i can not. however its a common design for power supplies and so I am sure its there. In fact, I know its there as I stated in a previous post, I used a high quality microphone that picked up the signal. oh and when i refer to the power supply in this context it would be an internal supply, not the power adaptor that pugs into the wall. although i can tell the adaptor is also a switching power supply as well. the pitch only comes on when the heat light is on.

I was looking into the other power adaptor that will allow the solo to be used via mains power. its 8.5V @ 5A as per a photo of the specs sticker on the back of the supply on a retailers site (its listed in a post somewhere earlier in this thread). I checked my local surplus store but they dont have anything like that. so i checked ebay and there are some chinese sellers with them. so i bought one for $6 shipping included. i will report back once i get it.

I assume the solo has a voltage detector in it and can sense when the lower voltage 8.5V supply is connected vs the supplied 12V adaptor. The former will allow the solo to be used with powered by the mains and the latter will only charge it.

The next thing I want to check out is the battery in the solo. both for possible future replacement and also upgrading to a higher capacity battery, space permitting.

As i said, i will report back once i know.

You're not the first to try the cheap PS2 Slimline adapter from ebay Vaplexus.

Mine worked fine when tested, but I haven't used it anymore after someone reported his killed his Solo and another one reported one literally melted itself. Consider yourself warned ;)

Blaaaaah
Yeah I had a cheapo PS2 Slimline adapter melt. The casing of the brick began to get too hot and warp. This was when it was not even in use, just plugged into a power strip.

I have since then purchased the official solo ac adapter and the quality difference is leaps and bounds.

Ok thanks for telling me. I will examine the cheap one thoroughly before I use it. Its already ordered. But if it looks like a hazard I won't use it. There should be no reason the solo would be any different on an AC adaptor vs batteries. In my next post I will show you something verrrry interesting. But I can tell you that more than likely the power to the heater is very well regulated and that would be the only thing that could affect use (read: hit quality).

I disassembled the Solo. Here are the results. Findings:

1. The unit runs on two 18650 LiPo cells configured as 2S terminating in an JST-RCY connector. The cells are typical OEM cells shrink wrapped in blue and matrix printed with among other things 7.2V 2200mAH.

2. There is a modificaiton that can be made that will increase air flow resulting in potentially better fluffier hits with the caveat that its more possible to get AVB in the air path.

Now for the sexy pictures:

Arizer Solo take-apart

Note: No person dead or alive will take responsibility for anything you do to your own Arizer Solo. If you fuck something up taking it apart look in the mirror for blame. In other words I will not take any responsibility for anything to do with you and your Solo. There is a chance you will break something. I do not encourage you to do anything with your Solo. You've been warned.

Remove the 4 small screws on the bottom of the solo. The unit slides apart:

IMG_0024.jpeg

IMG_0023.jpeg

With the chassis out of the case, you can see its in 2 pieces clipped together with a plastic tongue. Bending the tongue under will enable the pieces to come apart:

IMG_0022.jpeg

IMG_0021.jpeg

When they come apart you can see the battery pack (blue):

IMG_0020.jpeg

The battery sits loose in the case. The connector is wrapped in black:

IMG_0019.jpeg

The battery pack is two standard 18650's in 2S with total capacity of 2200mHA according to the print on the pack. This means simple 18650's can be used to replace the pack and even increasing capacity. Here is the pack and 2 standard 18650 cells:

IMG_0018.jpeg

The battery uses a JST-RCY connector. This is great because it makes exchanging the battery a lot easier. Soldering will be required however to put the replacement pack together unless you have a source for pre-made packs. The connectors are real JST connecotrs and not cheap knock-offs. This echos the high quality of the rest of the Solo:

IMG_0017.jpeg

Here a couple shots of the main board. DIfferent lighting for different views. Observations: I can see components that make up a switching power supply, the likely culprit of the high frequecy pitch some people here. I do not think there is anything that can be done about it. Most of the chips have the part number scraped off, a typical tactic to prevent reverse engineering the circuit. Fine. I haven't been able to really reverse engineer the boards. I see 5 of what appear to the be the same chip, 2 multi-pin chips so its likely really digitally controlled. probably custom mictro controllers for this application. the smaller one at the top might be and A/D type chip to convert the temp sensor to digital.

I guess a couple drivers for the battery charging and the heater (black/red wires on the left and right respectively).

Note the 5 pin connector pads at the top left. interesting. a programmer or diagnostic interface?

IMG_0016.jpeg

IMG_0014.jpeg

Digging deeper into the heater head, first remove the 4 screws:

IMG_0013.jpeg

Then unclip to the top of the unit from the bottom:

IMG_0012.jpeg

The top and bottom separated:

IMG_0011.jpeg

The heater assembly matches to the chassis. There is a pair of thickish teflon coated wires and a pair of thin teflon coated wires going from the chassis to the heater. I assume the thick set is power to the heater and the thin is the temperature sensor:

IMG_0010.jpeg

Observation: on the inside of the case shell there is evidence of AVB suggesting AVB can get into the chasis:

IMG_0009.jpeg

The top of the crucible. Note the thin metal cruicible sits inside the high temp plastic chassis with 4 spacers to to hold it out from the chassis wall. This provides a small free channel for air flow up through the small holes in the crucible.

Further, the crucible appears held in place and there is more space under the bottom of the crucible and the bottom of the chassis suggesting the heater is under the crucible. This would be good instead of say touching one part of the wall of it, because it would provide more even heat flow:

IMG_0008.jpeg

The top of the chassis has a smaller inner ring (in the middle). this ring actually buts up against the top of the crucible and plugs the 4 air gaps. no wonder there is constricted airflow. Later I will show a mod you can do to increase airflow:

IMG_0007.jpeg

This is the view inside with the upper part on, but without the plastic spacer showing the airflow path:

IMG_0006.jpeg

This is normally how the pieces would fit together:

IMG_0005.jpeg

So if you put it back together with the spacer out:

IMG_0004.jpeg

And then drop the spacer in the top, it will leave some space above the airflow gaps to allow more air to flow:

IMG_0003.jpeg

I tried it and it gives a little more airflow. bigger clouds but less stamina to produce them. So you have a choice now, both in batteries and in to mod to increase airflow.

Here is how i pack: small screen in the bottom:

IMG_0002.jpeg

and then the salad and another small screen. nice thing is this enables for different packing densities: you can go loose for more airflow and big fluffy clouds, or tight for more regulated flow, smaller clouds, and no AVB in the crucible:

IMG_0001.jpeg

One thing I should point out about the airflow mod: it means you will be more likely to get AVB in the airflow and/or the unit chassis so beware of that.

You're a Solo thread hero for doing that great teardown pictorial, Vaplexus. Awesome work.

Edit: would you say, given your obvious background in these matters, that the electronics are well sealed from the air path? I'm not sure if the ABV getting into the crucible constitutes that or not.

I empathize Darkrom, I really do. I too was one of those initial buyers that was raving and praising this thing, until the issues started to unfold. I still think this is the best portable vape out there, and i'm kinda excited that my new replacement (2nd one) doesn't stink! It did for the first several cycles, but about 6-10 cycles later (no herb), it seems to has disappeared just like my last one did.

darkrom said:
I haven't contacted arizer about the headaches. They have good replacement policy, but to be frank I honestly don't think arizer has ANY interest in anything other than making money. They fixed the ceramic bowl which was huge and I commend them for their replacement policy, but they SUCK at answering questions. They copy and paste general statements (organic ceramic letter comes to mind) and won't take the time to address us at all. They haven't really provided the community any answers or information from the beginning.

The only thing I'm really interested in from them is a return option at this point. There are serious issues that are simply being ignored and that's BS to me. What good is a warranty if the replacement units have serious issues from the start? This vape definitely makes me wonder if I have to reconsider my early adoption of any electronic based vaporizer in the future. What started out like a vaporist's wet dream has turned into a nightmare real fast IMO. I can't/won't even use mine. It sits there off because if I turn it on I'll get funky flavor/smell/headaches etc. Honestly I feel like I paid for nothing...but hey they sent me a replacement nothing with a new flake free bowl

Vapexus, definite props to ya for the effort!

My new 4 hole stems that I could barely even get in, now insert the same as my previous solo, tight, but not horribly. I guess those rings "wear in" or something....but this happened by just inserting a dozen times or so. Hmmmmm, or MAYBE they didn't fit until I started using some heat cycles? who knows, all is good now so i'm happy :)

I still don't understand how you can get ABV on the inside? I mean without doing the mod.

I wonder if they are scraping the 2 hole stems like they did the ceramic? Although I have my personal issues with Arizer, I think maybe they realize that they fucked up, and so is why they are offering free replacements?

Nice job vapexus!

I'm not sure if you caught it but someone else already took one apart earlier in this thread and identified the IC's that were used if you're interested. Might save you the time to do the same again. His post wasn't as thorough and detailed as yours though, thanks again!

How is the heat retention with the modified airflow, does it still hold it's temp well while drawing?

Do you think these would be a good replacement for the original batteries? I think I found them in a pack with a connector as well when I first found them, but don't have a lot of time to look right now.

New revelation regarding the SS bowl Solo. I had a feeling it was reaching (or at least showing) temperature a little quicker so I did a side by side test with the SS and older ceramic solo and the SS solo is WAAAY faster in reaching its temp. I mean, I would turn both on at the same time and select temp 7 and the SS would race up there in what seemed like a minute (didn't time it), and the ceramic solo just had hit temp 2!! The SS solo reached 7, and it must have took at LEAST another minute for the ceramic to catch up.

Anyone else have both solo's to compare and see? My SS solo starts with M105, and my peeling ceramic is M102. It appears to me that arizer will continue to do tweaks here and there without informing the consumer. I'm sure official Solo v2.0 is not too far away.

My SS solo now does not smell AT ALL.

Hey everyone,

I researched the FC forum extensively when purchasing my extreme Q last year and it was VERY helpful, so thank you for all your input to this site. I am truly loyal to FC for all my vaporizer questions and research. YOU ARE THE BEST.

I am now interested in the solo because I do like Arizer's customer service, warranties and quality products. Now, I say quality because I am happy with my Q and I expect the same with the solo. I have a few concerns and questions based on your feedback over the past few months.

1.) Some of you mention a ceramic solo compared to a different material, what is the difference? Is one of the materials an older model? When purchasing, how will I know if I'm getting the ceramic or not?

2.) I see some of you refer to your replacement solos as "SS", what does that mean?

3.) I notice the solo is available on vape sites for $250 and can be found on ebay/amazon for $150, In regards to the headaches, chipping and smells, have people who purchased these cheaper models notice a difference to ones who purchase through authorized retailers at $200+? Has anyone had a bad experience purchasing or replacing a vape at a cheaper price on sites like amazon or ebay?

4.) People refer to a 4 hole stem compared to a 2 hole, is this referring to a newer solo model?

5.) I plan on emailing Arizer to see if there is a Solo 2.0 coming out soon. If i'm gonna buy, I'd be willing to wait for the newer model. When I bought my extreme 4.0, the Q came out less than a month later. I emailed my retailer and they actually sympathized with me and worked out a deal to give me the Q at wholesale price if I can sell my extreme. Basically, I got to swap out for the Q and a friend bought my 4.0.

6.) Does anyone own a Q and a solo? If so, are they similar? Does the Q blow the solo out of the water in terms of taste, clouds and overall durability of the bud?

Thanks everyone!!!! I look forward to hearing your feedback. Sorry for the laundry list of questions!!!!!!

Thanks Vape4Life, your post is the opposite of why why I love this forum so much. I always thought the main dudes on here want their vape users to get the right information. Whether or not your response is prick-ish is a topic unto itself, I am simply hoping someone can chime in with an educated and brief anser to SOME of my questions. There is 93 pages here and I'm a little late to the party with the solo. I am trying my hardest to read through all of them and my post was just getting everything off the top of my head hoping someone had a quick answer. No big deal, thanks for your comment V4L...

I have read many posts about the solo and I can't find the exact one that explains what "ss" means. I can't recall seeing what the weight difference and feel of the ceramic versus the newer model. I don;t recall seeing a post about ebay cheap models versus authorized retailers...
