@chimpybits, O-rings are necessary and if you want to save the hassle get it from PV. One will come with your PVHES stem but they get hard after a while and lose some grip. You can order a huge bag full if you are so inclined. I also suggest the PA but you can wait for the Tim/Pipes one which will have way more versatility which will be great in a car or camper or where ever. I know you said you don't need a PA but with the one that is coming down the pipe I think it would make your solo way better. The tube for the stem is only an extra buck so even though OF's solution works a buck isn't much for a ready made one.
As OF suggested off my suggestion long ago use the stock stems first to learn the solo even though you are buying the PVHES. There is a learning curve and I feel it is important to learn it as is before moving on. It will give you a clue to it's limitations if you want to call it that. It will also help you with the proper draw and air flow. You won't even learn this till the natural retaining ring loosens up. I wouldn't even put in the o-ring till you fully learn it either. Give it at least a week of good use IMO.
For everyone info if you don't know, the tubes that are used to hold the stem are 2 liter bottles and can be bought on line for fairly reasonable as well. I think it comes up if you google test tubes but don't quote me.
