Arizer Solo

Where is everyone getting the impressions that the older ceramics had better battery life? Is there anything that has been said by Arizer to back this up? I remember Kevin saying that they did make the m105's cooler but never read anything about them lower the battery life..

I think I am going to do what vapelexus did and swap the internals of my old 102 ceramic with my new SS 105 so I can run the SS at higher temps. It's nice to have that extra headroom for extracts and such.

Personal experience.

My friends call me "Menz"
Hello All,
I broke down and ordered my Solo from PlanetVape on Thursday 3/1/12 and it was in my hands on 3/5/12 which i think is crazy fast considering there was a weekend thrown in there!!! I will say that i am very happy with PlanetVape's customer service. i contacted them today cause after unboxing the solo i noticed two things.....
1) i did not get the travel caps i the website said was supposed to be included
2) i noticed that my solo (which is the black model) had a white scuff on the bottom like it was dropped.
I am not too concerned with the cosmetics as long as the unit works (and it does) but i did want to make them aware. the CSR i was chatting with apologized about the missing caps and said he would send some out today. he asked what i wanted to do about the scuff mark. again as long as it works i don't care but since he was sending such a small order in the mail i asked if he might include some screens. he said he would throw some in. now thats good customer service, and i appreciate that.

as for the Solo itself.... i used it 3 times last night to test it out. first i ground up my herbs as i always do in my grinder. the first test did not impress me. I own a DBV, Iolite, and MFLB. in comparison to the Iolite and MFLB that first test i did not get the thick clouds and the taste was not there either and on the first test i was saying to myself "my Iolite hits better than that". the next tests i hit it a little "harder" than i do my Iolite and noticed i got better hits (thicker clouds and much better taste) and i was happier cause it was actually better than my Iolite those times. so in my experience it seems the airflow through the solo is much tighter than my Iolite but when i hit it harder i like the results better than my Iolite. i hear adding adding a screen that is slightly "bowled" (not sure if thats the term) may help but looking at the tiny bowl in these stems, i have to wonder if there is any room for product if you add a "bowled" screen??

anyone else got some tips for a new solo user that has used other portables like the Iolite and MFLB? i know this unit is in no comparison to my DBV which i LOVE nor should it be compared to it.

thanks in advance
Mike

Which model did you get? the 105 has a lower temp setting while the 106/107 reverted back to the original higher scale of the 100-104.

I'm awaiting my M107 from vapornation currently. Got a bunk m105 from amazon, but the few days i used it I enjoyed hooking it up to some water filtration, got nice clouds that way, just had to start on 3 or 4

I find that if i let the herb heat up with the solo (ie. pack a stem, put it in the solo, then turn it on and wait for it to reach temp) i get thick clouds almost straight away.
If i put a stem into an already heated unit, it takes a couple of draws to get good vapor as the herb needs a little time to heat up.

Most people around here call them "domed" screens, and yes, there is still plenty of room for your herbs after inserting a screen.
I'd say a screen will take away maybe 1/6 of the bowl area of the stem.
That's just a guestimate though.

I got a shipment today from planetvape. :brow:

Amongst other things, i got my 2 GonG stems and a Y adapter...

So, In the name of science, I give you the double solo (the Duo?)

I felt a bit :science: when i first put it all together, but I must say I am very happy with the performance.

The cool part is, while I'm pulling, I can see the vapor in the Y adapter, so I now have visual confirmation of the fact that my SS runs 1 number cooler than my Ceramic.

With both units on 4 (or 7 towards the end), I can see a line down the middle of the y adapter showing that the SS is giving me a bit less vapor.
When the SS is 1 number higher than the Ceramic, they are pretty much equal.

With the 2 solos, it doubles the airflow, so the restriction on the draw is a lot less noticeable.

Now, I'd like to give a representation of showing my friends the Duo tonight using some of the newly available smileys:

I have a new mission in life if i can make the dead M-105 unit work again with a new batt pack. I'll post pics of the battery swap once i get it from slow fed ex

ili,
I used 1 hand to hold my bubbler, 1 hand behind the solos bracing them, just in case.
They stay there pretty well on their own as long as they are mostly vertical.
It's even pretty easy to grab the Y adapter and pull it out to clear the bubbler.

I might shoot a video of it in action, but I don't have any video editing software to do anything fancy.
I could probably shoot a quick little vid to show off the setup though.

After I took the picture, I swapped out the black leaf barrel pre-cooler with a 14->18mm adapter, which I then put a 18->14mm adapter, so it's basically a 14->14mm adapter

Oh, you and others made it seem like this was fact, when it's really more of an opinion. I have noticed such minimal difference in battery life between my two solo's that I can't agree with your experience. Good to know that Arizer didn't kill the battery life in one of their "re-designs" intentionally haha. Common sense would make me think that the ceramic has shorter battery life considering it runs hotter and will draw more current to heat up to your desired number. And then there is the chargers... so one has been recalled and it charges incorrectly? How was this discovered? Is Arizer sending out new chargers now?

My understanding was that the ceramic retains heat a bit better, so it uses less energy to maintain temp, leading to longer battery life.

Having said that, I get pretty similar, if not identical battery life out of my SS and ceramic.

the CSR at PlanetVape suggested the same thing to me (the heating of the product in the solo during the initial heat up time), so i will defiantly give that a try tonight when i get home. sorry for using the wrong terminology when i said "bowled" instead of "domed" when i get my screens i will try that method. for the people that have done the "domed" screens.. does it allow the airflow to be easier?? what i mean is for example.... i pull my Iolite and i can pull rather easy (lightly) to get vapors. i feel like i am pulling "harder" (sort of like a thick McDonalds milkshake) on my solo to get the vapors. and just so you know... i am not overpacking the stems and i am grinding the material to a fine texture. so does the "domed" screens allow the airflow to be easier to pull??

second question.... i own a DBV and i have lots of screens for it... are the screens that planetvape is sending me for the solo the same size?? (i realize only people familiar with the DBV and the SSV may be the only ones that can answer that)

thanks again everyone, this forum is such a wealth of information. you guys rock!!!

Mike

mmenzie,
I used my DBV screens and cut them down to size before I ordered the .5 screens from ebay for like $1. But then I bought a new wand for my DBV which is a little different and the screens are smaller and the exact same size as my solo screens now lol. Although the 7th Floor screens look a little heavier duty then the ones I bought from Ebay.

Haha, that's cool, I'm sure everyone knew why you meant anyways. :)

The DBV/SSV screens are too big, but they can be trimmed down with scissors easily enough.
The main advantage of the screen is to stop particles from falling through the 4 holes in the stem, I personally dont think it affects the actual airflow too much.

The screens planet vape have been using are small enough that they fit loosely in the bottom of the bowl.
They will still stop the particles falling through, but the screen will come out when you empty a finished stem. (this is what planetvape wanted, Their idea being it is easier to clean, and it's harder to remove a domed screen for cleaning.)
They have recently been shipping out some bigger screens that fit quite nicely once they have been domed, and they hold themselves in to the stem unless you actively remove them.
That's the main advantage to the domed screen IMO, but I believe others have posted that it may help the airflow within the bowl (note, not the total airflow) to help everything extract evenly.

I find using cotton instead of a screen restricts the air flow and helps also make thicker clouds

I use cotton, and it's been pissing me off because it gets clogged with oil quickly, then it becomes near impossible to pull.

However, it's been keeping the oil out of whatever I connect to the stem (Vapor Tamer etc), and I don't want to gunk up any extra glass, unless I dedicate it just for that.

Ultimate solution just might be to use a dry ashcatcher such as ilovebOObs does.

ilovebOObs

can i stick my male joint in there?
yea i got the whole hash catcher idea from treecity, its been working out great. i just use a cotton ball to clean it then vape the cotton ball. my bubbler has seen less cleaning, mostly just a hot water bath and thats it. i don't really clean the hash catcher much unless i do a video or something.

i also have a aqua vape coming, gonna see if i can get it to work with the solo, hopefully get it by the end of the week. i'll keep you guys posted.

Hey ilovebOObs,

I'm interested what your "hashcacther" looks like right before you think it's time to collect. Do you have a picture? That will be my target, hopefully. I bought two ashcatchers (one small and one big) and want to use one instead of cotton, and the other for water. Vaping is taking a bigger toll than I expected, so I am trying to make some changes to my setup!

I am guessing the ash catcher is the part that is hanging off the main water pipe stem, that looks like a bubbler?

jambandphan03 that is correct!

hogleg, I will try with less cotton. I thought 1 qtip head was little (what I use now), all you use is a quarter?
