I'm not sure if the original PS2 adapter will work? I used an old working "slim" PS2 power supply, spliced up the proper connections, and it triggers "PA mode" in my old model Solo. When I say "old model" I mean the one that needs one cable to charge, and a separate cable for PA. Mine's rated 8.5v and 5.65a and works.

I have a PS2 Slim power adapter with the same specs as you, 8.5V and 5.65A... so yours is working on your older model? I'd like to know what this would do to the newer models, just charge and heat like the charger... mystery!

No real mystery, Read these posts and might answer your question. It will likely work but wouldn't give any guarantees.
I too got the same answers as you. But the other way around. I emailed back when the new units came out and got the second answer you received. I had forgotten about that one. Thanks for the reminder. Never posted that reply as "extra voltage" being used to trickle charge made zero sense except to cause confusion.
I had emailed again last week and got the answer you got the first time.
Makes sense but we have had reports of using the old 8.5v supply while battery is fully charged, using very little battery until the charging circuit decides it time the battery requires charging. This particular observation is the only possible useful benefit for the old scheme supply for new Solo's. Also, on the negative, leads to the user tending to keep their batteries topped up all the time which is NOT good. More conformation for this is still required though. Maybe something Arizer never thought worth promoting? Hard to say. But pretty standard email responses. Interesting programming side effect but is it useful...?
Thanks again for reminding me of the first time I emailed. Thought I'd been down that road.

Thanks for forwarding the emails.

The first is, I think, somewhat accurate. "Provides no added benefit" is correct, I think, but it fails to mention that the old style PA will not completely charge the new units. Otherwise it's 'almost as good' as the charger supplied.

The second claims, "the unit uses as much voltage as required to heat, and any remaining voltage is used to trickle charge the battery" is absolutely wrong technically. It's not voltage, but current that's the factor. Big difference to those who know about such things. Since the delivered voltage doesn't change (like to your house), the power used depends on the current drawn (just like your house). Solo uses about 80% of the available power, when heating that's not enough so it discharges the battery for the remainder. When the heater cycles off again, it really doesn't shut down completely but continues to use a reduced amount of the power from the charger to heat, giving the remainder to the battery to recharge until the next (full power) heat cycle starts.

In practice this is done with a 'down converter' inside Solo that 'chops' the 12Volt, lower current to make lower voltage (but higher current) to charge the battery. Only one output, not "8.5V and the remaining 3.5+ volts trickle charges the battery". In practice, I think, it's reduced to the battery voltage since I think the new Solo is using the same scheme as Air, that is the battery is charged 'on one side' by the charger and discharged 'on the other' by the power demands for heating. Something like would happen if you put a trickle charger on your car battery and switched the headlights on and off.

But, from a technical standpoint "any remaining voltage is used to trickle charge the battery" is just plain wrong and to me indicates a guy who is intentionally or ignorantly 'blowing smoke'. It sounds OK unless you know what he's talking about.

Bottom line is the PA doesn't give PA operation with the new style, and as a charger isn't not going to do a complete job (but will take longer). IMO basically useless with the new version, the normal charger gives more features for less money. The PA is only a benefit with the old style.

Agreed both times. Sounds like a 'canned' response to me as well. And as Ollie North once famously said "at variance with the truth"?

Yep, my rigged-up PS2 brick has been working just as expected. It probably spent some days total plugged in but not actively being used (in idle mode). I haven't noticed any changes with my Solo or the power brick, everything's working as expected.

So has anyone had success with the PS2 power adapter with a 5.5x2.1mm female jack to 4.0x1.7mm male or by replacing it with a new plug? It's 8.5V and 5.64A so there shouldn't really be any problems technically speaking?

I have an original PS2 and not a fake copy so I don't expect it to catch fire but I'd like to know if someone had successfully done it before just in case :)

I used to own a video game store, so I had several original PS2 power supplies for use with the Solo. Some I scabbed on the proper Solo connecter, on others I just used an adapter plug. They all worked fine as a true PA with the original charging design.

Ataxian is always breaking stuff--well I just lose everything.....grinder, EQ controller,Ed's Blackwood stem and lots of pot. So I was thrilled to find Ed's stem just sitting on a shelf where I had looked 100 times before. Apparently it had finished visiting my socks and other lost items and popped back out of the black hole where they all hang out.

Rocking some Cotton Candy Kush in the Solo this New Year's Eve. Probably get the bubbler out a little later. I have some Black Cherry Soda and will get that out with the bubbler. Soloists, what do you have in your Solo this winters' night?

The woodstove is loaded up with plenty of firewood. The temp outside is 27 degrees, clear and getting colder. This is a very smooth vaping experience with the Cotton Candy Kush. The Solo gets the job done and then some. Just a quiet night at home.
Happy New Years to my FC friends.

It's rainy and about 70 here, windows are open and a slight breeze is moving through the house. I am really enjoying my d020-d paired up with the solo. Really brought the solo up to another level for me. I don't have a name for my herb, but it is goooood. Happy New Year FC and thanks for all the usefull info.

I just got home from a long day of work, I loaded up quite a salad! Three different mystery strains plus a layer of kief, it's only half the solo bowl, but I know it's enough to medicate and then some! It's 14F here and that's very warm considering what we have been dealing with.. I'll be ending the year and starting the new one hangin out with my dog, I wish you all a great and safe night!

It was snowing lightly here at home this morning, my mom woke us all up to go outside and see it! Got a good little layer of snow up on the mountains (that I can see from my house!) but been busy all day; lots of family came over for a little NYE get-together. This many people here makes me kinda uncomfortable... plus I gotta stealth vape hard here because essentially everyone here but my immediate family really looks down on weed (yet half of them are borderline alcoholics)... Going in on a quick stem of some super tasty Blue Dream (done with DJ Shorts Blueberry) to keep me sane. Hope everyone's doing okay!

Happy New Year Everyone ,
2015 Started off Great .
With a Solo :)

Yup , so true .
So what's your thoughts on the Solo ?
( and the other 2 portables you got ) :brow:
To tell you the truth, I have been using concentrates too much lately (family was in town) so concentrates was the best solution. I haven't used my solo yet, but will try it today.

Ordered a 2nd Solo on Monday from thegolfmiester on ebay. It is already at the local FED EX right now and may go out for delivery today. Feels like a late Christmas present. I ordered a black one this time. I'll see about warranty on my silver one and will have one of each. I have to have multiple vape backups(learned my lesson)!!
In the future I'll add the Arizer Air to the lineup-Cool how all the Solo stems and accessories will fit. This type of thing is smart on the part of the manufacturer, saves on tool-up costs and is a great selling point; the customer is less likely to "jump ship" to another company if some of their stuff can still be used on the new model.

Having 2 Solos, it's so nice to switch off. I have 3 but lately only using the 2 newer 2014 models. Now there is not as much wear and tear on the one unit. The units will last longer.

You never know when one will go on the blink and you have to use your warranty. So it's always good to have an extra. The Solos are pretty hearty they last a long time.

I've dropped mine before and they still work.
