@ataxian. Maybe you're right - if praising the device and only saying the flavor is a little better on another is bad, sorry - I don't belong.

As to what you see as ego, sorry, we don't all express things the same way. I certainly didn't mean to offend you. I WAS wondering if anyone else was interested in the medical issues, namely what does what, but that's OK, if I don't fit, I don't fit, no offense. OK. Ciao.
@Fernando we may just have some kind of discounect?
You seem to be a smart guy!
I have vaporizers that blow away the SOLO or the FIREFLY concerning flavor.
That's not the point!

where can I get one of these chillums @ataxian thanks buddy
jkGlrWp.jpg

The Local Smoke Shop for about $7.00 - $12.00 US

Bring in a clean stem with a piece of silicone tubing or vinyl electrical tape to make a seal and fitting.
Find a CHILLUM to fit. (there all different sizes)

Hey guys,
Been a while since I've posted here as new toys became the focus while the Solo was ye olde failsafe. However, recently it began to have a unpleasant taste and smell during sessions...

Thought it might be from never cleaning the steel plate of the oven with ISO, though I can't imagine that could make it this bad, as it looks pretty fine which is why I still haven't done that yet. I'm worried that it may be something internally, though I haven't gotten to do a flashlight check for any visible fumes when empty (I will ofcourse).

It does seem to be plenty functional otherwise though, so I wouldn't think the circuitry is damaged but perhaps it is? I figured I would open it up to check inside, but I don't really even know what to look for as I haven't done this before. Any tips on what to check?

I also wonder if the taste/smell could be from resin/oil building up inside the unit, as I remember someone saying that some could get in if you accidentally breath out a little at the end of a hit, and coat the interior and damage the circuitry if not cleaned out. If that is happening with mine, and the smell is oils over cooking inside the vape, how do I clean it? Is ISO and a qtip ok to use around the circuitry?

Anyone else experienced something like this with their Solo over time with heavy use? Any tips at all on opening and inspecting the Solo for issues? Thanks!

Actually I've brought the matter up several times over the past few years. A series of home made units that started with powering my Purple Days in the garden. Since it's mains driven, the only other option is a long extension cord......

Here you can see the latest version in front of my 'Solo Road Case':
ChB3ycM.jpg

As you can see it has three 18650s in series and the right connector to mate up with the extension cable that fits the Solo. This, along with the charger, PA (my units can take advantage of this feature being older), stem, stash, Solo and so on go in the camera case with it (it goes in a side pocket). I suggest this scheme (three in series 'barefoot') to the much larger one you suggest (3 times bigger?). Extra capacity is limited of course by how many battery sets you're willing to buy, charge and carry.

You should check your math before making plans. Yes, Solo uses 2200 mAh batteries (actually properly called "cells", two or more of which make a battery.......) but it has two in series. It needs something around 2200 mAh at 12 Volts to recharge. You really only have a maximum of 5200 mAh, of which you can get to maybe 80 or 85%? Think about it, if you put those 6 cells, two at a time, into the Solo that would be 3 pairs, right? 3 'recharges', not "7.09". And, due to the fact that you can't use them at 7.2 Volts, but are forced to use them at 12 Volts through the charger (the extra 'battery power' going to heat during recharge) you really can only get two full recharges. Them's the rules.

Your phone will have about the same 'conversion efficiency', but the NiMH in the MFLB case will be somewhat worse. Useful, but not as much as you're thinking I think?

While I'm not sure what to think about the OP's charging issue (I'm not sure it's a real issue since the battery comes up fully charged?), you might want to rethink that charge procedure some. Many times I've suggested here considering disconnecting when the 7 light lights but before the flashing stops. Doing so will double or more your battery life. Consider the information around chart 4:
http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batteries

I'm currently having some friends test my latest kluge to do this automatically. It seems to be working quite well, it looks like this:
vMEGl5W.jpg

The Solo charger plugs in upper left and the output (to the Solo) connects to the blue terminal block next to it. The 'start' button is lower right. When charging is cut off (at a level set by the screw above the switch) it beeps at you by the beeper under the washing cover to the left of the switch. Since it cuts off the much slower (and less efficient) part of the charge curve to the user it charges much faster (1/3 to 1/2 less time) and has very little if any useful 'sessions per charge'. And the battery lasts 2 or 3 times longer. You can get the same benefits manually but you have to watch it and guess a bit (since you really want to go 'a while' with the light still flashing for optimum results I think).

BTW when you get to the 'need the funny cable to mate up with the Solo' part you might want to contact Pipes, I think has some left over from his PA project. The connector, 1.7X4mm (AKA EIAJ-02) can also be bought from a few places (I order mine from Digikey) if you're game for making your own.

Fun idea, but not as popular as you might think?

Best wishes in your endeavors.

This charge controller is pretty awesome! I could see a faster "charge" time be a huge selling point for those who are always rushing on their way out the door.

Whenever I charge batteries I use this one random Tenergy charger that would cutoff "early" at about 4.0-.1, I never notice the batteries not being a full 4.2 and can attest that all my batteries are still good and i havnt added any since I was at TV.

You're welcome. You're fine taking the small screws out of the base and pushing the chassis out the bottom. Just don't mess with the four larger screws up top. The ones that hold the oven on. Under neath you'll find a cover over the battery with four clips, carefully release them and you can unplug the battery and set it aside. It will dry much better with the cover off.

Hi. 'Thought I should update you on this, OF. I ran the battery down thinking that it might charge it anyway, even if I didn't see the lights. I left it plugged in for several hours, during which it kept beeping, with the blue "idle" light on. When I went to try heating it up again it was no-go. I've put it back in the airtight container with rice. Maybe this will eventually revive it. I appreciate your instructions regarding opening the case, but I think I need a special screwdriver for that; I have attempted numerous times to take out the tiny screws and they are so tight that I'm afraid I'm going to strip them with the inordinate force applied.
To mitigate the situation, I went out to my neighborhood head shop and just bought a vape pen with glass. I wanted something smaller to add to my collection anyway. It's a 'Cloud' and works really well. I really like the size and portability. I'm not going to give up entirely on the Solo but I have this gut feeling that it's going to have to be replaced. I do thank you for all your (wonderfully detailed) help regardless.

You're quite welcome. I'm not so sure about the 'wonderfully detailed' part, but I really prefer that description to 'rambling and incoherent'.........

Good luck with it, if you end up replacing it good show it's a $160 Solo not some of the more 'carriage trade' priced models. And you end up with extra stems and chargers.

lol on the "rambling and incoherent"!
I got the Arizer Solo online for $139. It shipped really fast. I think it was only a couple days. It bites to think about shelling out another $100 + But I should comfort myself with the extra pieces. And you never know...if I keep my old one ensconced in rice for a while, it might revive. In which case, I'll have a gift for a friend (I try to look at everything positively).

So no visible fumes, and swabbing the oven with ISO helped some, but there is still some lingering taste/smell. So maybe it is that there is some resin inside the unit? Probably near the other side of the oven?

So how do I check that, and how do I clean it? Same way with ISO and qtip, or do I need tojust use a toothpick or something to scrape. I also don't seem to have a screw driver small enough to open it, will an eyeglass kit work if I go buy one?

Thanks

I can't see your unit from here, and for sure can't smell for you, but if you've ever used the Solo (and for practical purposed most any vape?) there's going to be some smell at some level. It should be fairly minor and diminishing with time but consider an ex smoker's clothes. He doesn't notice probably, nor did he while he smoked, but friends can still smell the old clothes for a while? And his mother 'forever'? And you'll never fool a bloodhound (or even a good 'coon dog).....never.

Anything the vapor contacted potentially has condensate. Most of those can't be reached, some are absorbent enough they won't wash clean in ISO. Expecting this or most vapes to ever be 'clean as new' after being used might be a loosing battle. Once you use it again, it's going to smell even more of the new bud, right?

Um, I'm not talking about the smell of the herb, and I haven't had the smell of smoke on or near me for quite a while lol... I know what vapor smells like, as I do have many other vapes and know how my Solo uses to taste/smell. This smell is closer to burning, and since cleaning the oven, I'm thinking condensate (that's what I meant by resin) go inside the unit maybe around the outside of the oven, and is burning a little still and is not burning out. So Im thinking it may need to be cleaned inside? I know you can't see or smell it, so I'm just trying to describe it as best I can you know?

So what I'm saying is I can't even taste the bud in here, its just covered by whatever taste this is. It does taste different than my first Solo which was defective (lights flashing up and down and burning plastic taste), and it developed after months of use suddenly. Specifically happened after a lot of use on a road trip, towards the end starting tasting much worse...

So just wondering what to check for inside (and how to open it), I've never really opened up any of my vapes that weren't intended to be (like how elevape has the alan wrench for example), but since it still tastes and smells off, I thought it would be worth checking instead of having to mail it back again first (went through that so many times). Otherwise, i feel like I'll never use it, the taste is that bad. More like my gf's (admittedly possibly defective even) FlowerMate than its original glory.

So just hoping I can get it back to normal, thanks again man

You've got me really confused, if you know what vapor smells like and know this isn't the same smell why are you messing around with cleaning the condensate with ISO? Condensate is going to smell the same no matter where it is.

Unscrew the cap, you have full access to the oven exterior. If you're bent on opening it up, take the four small screws out of the base and slide the cover off upwards. Be careful putting the screws back, the plastic tabs can be broken off.

Unless I'm misunderstanding something here, you're talking about a problem nobody else has experienced? Your otherwise working Solo turned into a contaminated/defective mess in storage? IMO sending it in is probably the best idea. Since this is not a 'known issue' I doubt other owner's experiences will be much help?

Good luck with it. IMO it's worth getting back in service.

The 4 screw on mine where very hard to loosen, needed someone to hold the SOLO and put full force down with an extra extension on screwdriver. I just loosened mine to prevent the plate from cracking.

Yea, i don't have a small enough screw driver yet so checking the internals will have to wait. In the meantime I'm going to bring it along with my Elevape this weekend to see if gets any worse, as the outer ISO wash did seem to help a little at least? After that maybe I will just try to send it in again as @OF suggests, after all now i have others to keep me satisfied in the meantime thankfully (my first defective Solo is what started the collection after going Solo off of T1). I'll report any developments

So after a bit of use, i prefer the m107 over the new model.

Something about the extra airflow and redesigned ss bowl and redesigned heater housing (yes, with the cap off the new model is slightly diff then the m107)..in fact the top of the new model doesnt fit on the m107 model, the threads dont line up at all.

Which sucks b/c i was hoping to use the new top off my new model and replace the old top of my m107, which is very old and chiped/fading/ ect.

But alas they dont fit.

So overall, the m107 kicks ass, the new model , m1f1 or whatever, its ok, but im not getting the same clouds at all, the diff heater is what i am assuming is causing this.
(edit- it still is a great vape, the m107 just had a taaaad more consistent vapor production. With the new model, some hits are huge, followed by some that are wispy, then back tohuge again, i dunno lol )

oh and the official arizer glass stems seem lower quality then what i was getting before...not sure if that is truth

yea, the m107 is the first model i bought a few years ago,

i used it over 4000 times, and it still works as well as day one. I just need a new top for it...anyone?
