Welcome back, @2clicker! Agreed - doesn't get easier than the Mesh. Started a thread on it, but there's little more to say. Perhaps the first stoner-friendly solution!

Also started a thread on inception coils. This idea was inspired by your coil-within-coil build. (The new alienception is phenomenal.) PM if you want to try - it would be an honor.

well i appreciate the kind words. and im quite inspired by your builds. i would love to try one of these, but id have to cop some alien wire cuz i dont have the patience for that build anymore! lol

would it fit in a Rafale X? its got a ton of build space.

about the mesh... i think a 100 mesh is going to be better than the 150 thats included. i like whats included, but the oil does pool on it. a more porous mesh will allow it to absorb more. still without it dropping through. maybe even run two layers. need to source more SS316L mesh!

Thanks! Been using 13 cm alien wire shots. It's quite a challenge to wrap a level 4 inception coil with so little wire, but the result is worth it - and they can be reused indefinitely with ultrasonic cleaning. Yes, even the biggest fit in the Rafale. Prefer bottom airflow with a vertically mounted coil, but side airflow works fine.

Any metallic taste from the mesh?? How’s it taste after a few hits? Does the mesh gunk up and start tasting nasty? I stopped using rda’s for wax/shatter/oil as the taste really got to me.

could even space the top layer just a tad above the bottom one creating another resvoir for the goods if desired.

it will if you dont pre treat the mesh with heat. SS316L oxidizes at temps in the 800F (i believe) so heating your SS up to a light glow (dont let it get too bright) is actually a good thing. this eliminates any oils and such from manufacturing or your fingers and from there you shouldnt get the metal taste. sometimes it make take a dab or two to really get rid of it, but once its gone on that coil its gone. it can be cleaned over and over and not need to be heat treated anymore. BUT! if you let the coil glow bright red to white hot youre getting into oxidation territory and i would advise the coil be discarded for a new one.

in short with a little effort you can eliminate any metal tastes from SS316L.

oh and as for gunk... hopefully your oil doenst gunk too quickly, but all do to a degree. the key is to keep an eye on it. if it starts to taste off then put a new one on and clean the gunked coil. i change coils about once every two weeks.

Thanks man! Looks like it’s time for a tc mod and a new rda! I was thinking of the evic series or Eleaf pico but haven’t really checked out mods in awhile. I don’t vape ejuice so it would just be used for wax. Any suggestions or thoughts on the mods I was thinking of.

As @2clicker says, the Vandy Vape Mesh is the easiest entry into this rewarding endeavor, and it can also be used as a post-less deck for wire coils.

IMO, Tendou's Tokugawa RDA is made for these builds. It features cavernous build space and bottom and side airflow. (The bottom can even be plugged.)

For mods, may as well go with power - two (or three) 18650s. The Evolv DNA chips are popular and serviceable. The Yihi chips had a dry wick warning "feature" that prevented running these wickless builds in TC. Don't know if that's the case with newer versions. If you're only doing one hit, you shouldn't need TC. Everything should vaporize as it's ramping up.

ive been using the Evic series exclusively. orig, evic mini, and evic vt mini. after much use, and while i do love these devices, i think its time for me to get a device that does better TC. there are quite a few options but im a stickler for a single cell mod that isnt too big. was looking at a wismec P80, but heard their 510 connections are shit. and they are made by Joyetech!!! lol my Evics have been great but do suffer the occasional jump out of TC. that isnt due to a shit chip its due to undersized wire being used to connqct the 510. opening up the device and replacing the wires would easily fix that. i still havent done it to any of mine yet. OH! there is a third party firmware called Arctic Fox that can be installed on almost all Joyetech, Wismec, and Eleaf devices. its basically a much more involved firmware with a tool for setting up power curves and dif settings like with an expensive DNA device. the best part is that after you e installed the firmware you can change all those curves and settings from the device! w/out a computer. cant do that on any DNA chips. ive been reading that an Arctic Fox enabled Joyetech or whatever... is easily as nice as any DNA device. and for much less. i have yet to decide if im going to upload the AF firmware or not. it seems tricky on a mac... ugh

bottom airflow worries me and ive disregarded all bottom airflow attys because of this. you know oil is gonna get all up in there.

It's never happened. Even with a big vertical coil over a gaping hole.

The concentrate goes from solid to vapor instantaneously with a blast of air rushing up through it. That's the last place any spatter is going to go.

Get the most reclaim from the curved glass drip tip directly above it.

you want to rethink that Joyetech or Eleaf purchase. i dont believe they do true temp control. my evic vtc mini and vtwo mini are having issues with the mesh coil in Mesh RDA. never had this issue with wire coils, but this mesh seems different. i think to properly control the temp of SS316L mesh you need a higher quality device. something with a DNA, yihi, or FSK chip in it. unfortunately these devices are more expensive. but in the vaporizer game not too bad compared to what some flower vapes cost. $150 isnt bad if you justify it that way! lol

of course if a mesh coil isnt your thing and your happy with wire builds then the evics or eleaf devices should be good enough.

now im seraching for high quality temp control. looks like DNA is my next step. also cool they these chips are designed and made in the US.

@Accept... what say you about DNA? you own them yeah? im looking for a DNA device that is close to the size of my Evic Vtwo mini. lil wider and taller is ok, maybe even a little thicker, but no thicker than 27mm. preferably 18650. a single cell if possible but i dont see many.

Yeah, but neither device uses a single 18650 cell. Also, never really learned how to use them to their full potential. Find the controls less than intuitive.

Surpisingly, like EHPro's in-house chip on the Fusion mod. It doesn't provide as much control as the DNA chips, but it's very easy and quick to use. EHPro offers some mini TC mods, but can't vouch for them.

Whichever is available, just not the Yihi. For concentrate, the mesh build is an obligatory one-hitter, so unconcerned with TC.

Don't use the Mesh much. (Say that five times fast!) The Mesh is easy to use and works well, but the inception coils are a whole new level in terms of effects and economy, IME. No desire to use anything else - not even a SiC e-nail. For nic juice, like to squonk and disappointed with the cotton ball wicking on the Mesh. (Actually, this might work better bottom fed, but Vandy's Pulse BF is tough to beat.)

interesting. what do you mean in regards to effects and economy? i ask because i get the same results using either wire or mesh. in regards to effect and efficiency. when the mesh was working for me in TC its the best coil ive ever used personally. thats why its so disappointing on my evic devices. the joyetechs just cant seem to TC the mesh properly. and to be honest its pissing me off. i find it appealing because its so easy.

interestingly enough i made a really basic inception coil with just plain old round SS316L wire and was getting great performance out of it. it could be in my head, but i compared it to one of my old style staggered clapton inception coils and i was getting more flavor from the plain round wire over the complex twisted version. maybe a totally round inception coil is worth a shot? with two or three coils like your triple threat alien inception. is there something to be said for plain round wire over a complex build?

honestly i want to just skip wire and stick with mesh moving forward. i find it much easier to work with and i dont get off on coil porn. its ok for it to look cool, but i want performance over esthetics. so im hoping i can dial in accurate temp control using mesh. thats the direction i want to go. hopefully one of these devices that actually does TC properly will remedy my issue. the struggle is real.

Easy enough to insert some mesh and test. The DNA200 chip in a Lost Vape squonk mod regulated fine, as did the EHPro. The DNA75 chip, in an Athena mod, kicked into power mode. The Yihi just said the coil was dry and gave up, as usual.

Don't recall trying a round wire (except wrapped in and around one of W9Tech's new ceramic wicks). Every wire tried worked fine - tri-braid, vertibraid, quad-core clapton and tri-core alien.

It's a unique experience. A 10-20mg dab vapes completely in a surprisingly compact, quick and easy hit. No water needed. Only need two or three of these over the course of an evening to stay medicated. With a nail, need to dab more frequently.

initially, The third "level" was just a way to get the leads on opposite ends. This won't be a problem on the Rafale, because you can adjust the posts to sit side-by-side. Each level heats less than the preceding one, and the third probably doesn't contribute much. The fourth is clearly unnecessary. It was inspired by Tendou's crazy RDA. Had to use up all that space.

Don't get off on coilporn?

This little number is what started this perversion! :o

so one of your DNA devices jumped into power mode? i didn’t realize DNA chips did that. i assume a safety feature...? well that is disheartening. i would sure hate to spend the cash on a nice DNA device only to have it jump into power mode when running mesh. and you said one of your other DNA chips worked well? did it glow red in temp mode when not hitting it (cooling it with air)?

is there any sure fire way to TC mesh? or should i just give up on it? what makes the mesh so much different than the wire builds? its the same material. my only guess is the diameter of the wire in the mesh. maybe i need to find a 28-30 gauge diamter mesh. that would be close to a traditional wire build.

as for the coil porn... not really. i mean they are fun to look at, but my pics were more for experimentation and education :science:

i really want the mesh to be my preferred heater. time to source some more SS316L mesh in different sizes i suppose. and keep an eye out for a higher quality chipped device.

Assuming the DNA75 device jumped into power mode, because it glowed red, even at very low temperature settings. The devices that appeared to work never glowed red but were still hot to the touch. If you buy a DNA device, and it doesn't TC, shouldn't you be able to return it?

Wouldn't characterize the distinction as between wire builds and mesh. The inception coils also give far better results than any other wire build. Started by building coils similar to yours above, but couldn't get the clapton outer coil hot. Did your builds heat more evenly? Or was the intention to heat the clapton coil only enough to wick to the inner coil? While the outer inception levels heat less than the inner ones, the first two levels both heat very significantly.

Guessing this is the reason for the observed effect - the dab soaks into a complex, wicking wire so that all of the concentrate is in close contact with SS that ramps up very quickly. It all vaporizes in a flash, maybe even faster than on a nail. Also, the ramp-up should mean that the concentrate vaporizes as soon as the metal it's in contact with reaches the right temperature - so that it's already gone before the metal gets hot enough to burn it. Just theory, this all happens in under a second, so who knows what's going on?

You'd expect mesh to behave similarly, but the results have been different. Will do a side-by-side later and report back.

i dont know if i will be able to return the mod if it doesnt TC mesh. the vendor could argue im not doing it right or something. idk. ill email the vendor before placing any orders.

my staggered clapton inception (sci) coil heated evenly from what i could tell. the outter clapton wire was def vaping the oil also. i think the key here is the stagger or space of the outter wire on the clapton. you see how the leads from the inner coil wrap around the clapton wire, but wraps in the spaces left behind from staggering? this should produce leads (on the finished coil) that looks like a reg single core clapton wire. that way the screw/post makes equal contact with the leads from both the outter and inner coil. idk what else it could be.

also what coil and mod settings are you using that vapes the dab in one quick second? when i dab it takes 5-10 seconds to vape the whole dab. but i def get it all in one rip. and its flavorful as hell. thats at around 390-420F, 40-50watts, on whatever ohm the coil is. not using TC is not something im looking for. i wanna be able to hand my device to someone else and not worry about them getting a nasty rip.

Thanks - never noticed that. Wouldn't have been able to do that with pre-built clapton wire. Your build was probably working better, so the observed difference might not be as great for you.

Run the inception coils at full power, no TC. Even works on mech mods. 40-50W is fine, but more power seems better, so currently running on 150W mod. Again, heating for such a short burst, all of the concentrate vaporizes in early ramp-up, so it seems to make sense to accomplish this as quickly as possible. Finger's off the button before the coil glows red.

Flavor seems to depend on soaking the concentrate into the coil. If done gently, with no decarboxylation, the flavor is comparable to a low-temp dab. It's easy to see decarboxylation (bubbling) when pulsing. It's fine if it happens, just not as flavorful.

Would NEVER hand this to someone with low tolerance or who gets overly anxious after hitting a 20mg dab. You'll be scraping them off the ceiling.

yeah ok that makes sense. ill give power mode a shot, but back when i was doing this before TC, all on mech mods, i always had mixed results. using power mode and vaping it all very quickly seems like it would cause crazy splatter inside the RDA. after about a half gram through the mesh RDA there is zero splatter inside the cap or on the deck. only condensed oil.

regarding the flavor after loading. i only warm the coil to load when im in a hurry. like you said if you warm it too much you destroy precious terps. my advice, and what i do most of the time, is not warm the coil at all. simply apply the dab to the coil while its at room temp. then blast away when youre hitting it. this should preserve almost all the terps. this will give you the most flavorful hits. i dont find any benefits to soaking the coil when loading. the oil will still wick even if you blast it all at once from a “cold load”. itll just happen very quickly. this may cause some splatter, but worth it for the flavor IMO. also note that with cylindrical coils that it may be harder to load a cold dab. the dab may roll off if its not sticky... like some shatter. ive been wanting to experiment with a flatter coil. like wrapping the wire around a pop-cycle stick. well maybe not that wide, but you get the idea. that would provide a nice and more flat surface to load on. thats one of the reasons i love the idea of mesh. flat surface for loading and crazy surface area? yes please!

i would like to add that i want a device that i can blast a huge dab from in one rip AS WELL as be able to sip on a dab if i want. yes i know flavor seriously degrades after that first rip, when sipping, but im ok with it. so i want a setup that can be a one hitter quitter or be a slow mule. i want it both ways. lol.

also i was looking at that modefined sirius mod the other day and i REALLY like its size and esthetics. also it appears that modefined is a child company to Lost Vape. so thats awesome, but i cannot tell what chip is in the sirius...? is it a DNA chip? not one vendor with this mod has this info. and unfortunately there is no modefined website yet. nor is this device on the Lost Vape site. guess i need to email them.

we got a great dialog goin here partner! lets keep it goin.

Initially, tried cold loading. The shard of shatter just blew off the coil, unheated. Would prefer cold loading, so this is something to work toward. It might be possible with side or top airflow and a coil shaped with this in mind.

If solid concentrate is completely soaked into the coil, there's no spatter at all in the RDA. There is significant reclaim in the drip tip - the long, curved, glass drip tip is a fairly essential component. This can include some spatter, especially if the concentrate wasn't soaked in completely. Been cleaning the tip regularly with warm EtOH and saving for later evaporation, similar to nail glass.

Who wouldn't? This might be possible with an inception coil in TC mode - haven't tried. So blown away by the big dabs.

Unfamiliar with that Sirius. The Lost Vape Drone squonk mod is by far the best build quality mod ever used, but it's kind of big and heavy. Definitely a desktop mod.

ahhh yes i can see why the shard flew of the coil from the cold load if the airflow is coming from below it. try this... just tap the fire button when applying the shard. that will warm the wire just enough that the shard will stick to it, but it wont be hot enough to soak. itll only heat a small part of the dab where it touches the wire. then cap it and give it hell. that stick may be enough to hold it long enough to vape it.

after looking into the Sirius more it appears that many... no the majority of these mods have an issue with the fire button sticking. i was about to pull the trigger actually. i still may as some report of no such problem. and i may be able to crack it open and fix the button. i like this device because of its size. i LOVE the size of my evic minis. it fits in my jean pocket so well next to my phone. so im hoping to find something with a better chip and is close to this size. the Sirius may just be that device. the button sticking could be a deal breaker though... idk yet

fuck i want the mesh to work. if not then my evics will suffice as they TC wire pretty damn well. i found some SS316 (not SS316L) mesh on a site that has a high mesh count AND the wire diameter is VERY close to that of 28 gauge wire. maybe that mesh will work better in my evic devices? i should probably try that before copping ng a new mod... lol

btw... where do you buy your SS alien and other exotic wire at?

Be careful - read that you need the "L" for this application. It stands for low carbon.

yeah i knew that, but i was going to put the non “L” 316 in and just observe it. wasnt going to vape off of it. just to see if it acts like a wire build.

you mentioned your wires are premade... where are you getting it from if i may ask...?

i have also heard that just because it’s labeled SS316L doesnt mean its of good quality. ive read where lightning vapes SS isnt that good of quality. and that Sandvik makes very pure SS. been thinking about sourcing some. idk. just the shit ive read.
