This is something I've been wondering about as well. I bought a cheap k type thermocouple to see the temp differences when using an insert, but I don't seem to be getting accurate readings with the probe that came with it. I'd like to know exactly how much I need to turn the temp up when using an insert so that the floor temps are equal when not using the insert.

Have you guys had good experiences with dish drop tech with the axial? I don't see many talking about it, and I had my controller up to 750 and still wasn't having the experience I wanted, so I went back to the torch which drop tech seems to be designed for. Of course the clear quartz dish is thinner than the 4mm opaque, and yields different results, but I still much prefer the opaque (non-slit). Dropping the cold loaded 4mm opaque dish insert in the 5mm opaque bucket after a minute blast with my Big Shot has by far been the best Cannabis experience i've ever had.... there is just nothing like that uptemp and then downtemp IMO.

In other news, I don't think I'm really a big fan of the new opaque shuriken.

I feel you and agree... it was more of a pain than benefit IME, and just got covered with oil in all the little crevices, and just doesn't work for drop tech. I really need to get a ruby pearl!

I've been enjoying inserts ( or was until I upgraded my coil ;) ) I was using the clear inserts though so maybe thats the difference. Faster heat transfer. Controller set about 655 things take a bit longer to get going in comparison to using the torch but I don't have to worry about pooling in the end or getting a burnt hit on finish. These are human errors so I assume some humans get much better results then others with a torch

I'm a bit impatient and tend to either rush the heat up or the cool down.

I guess this is where controllers with built in profiles really shine you could programme a profile with a start/end temp tuned specifically for your style of drop tech.

Does anyone torch there pearls when using inserts? I have an 8mm pearl that I like to torch first 5 seconds with a little jet flame lighter. I find it really gets things going quicker with the inserts.

100% this. The difference is quite substantial, as it should be considering the difference in material/thickness.

Maybe with the clear, but the 4mm opaque is extremely forgiving, to the point where I would have to say it's fool/idiot proof. There is a very wide buffer and pooling/burning isn't something that i've experienced yet with the opaque.

Torch definitely matters though, so I can see inconsistencies as i've experienced them myself.

With drop tech I always set a timer for a minute, and there shouldn't be any cooldown. I drop that sucker like it's hot right away! I don't want to lose any heat and I don't see why there is any reason to wait, UNLESS you're using a clear dish.

Not fast enough IMO.

Interesting concept! This is why I don't use 8mm in my drops, because I feel it would rob some heat. Do you just use tweezers and blast?

Looks like I need to grab to grab me some opaque inserts for my torch piece :brow:

I do! I use a single flame torch lighter , I hold it with the ceramic tweezers, hit it and drop it.

In other news, I don't think I'm really a big fan of the new opaque shuriken. At least when compared to the ruby/sapphire pearls and steam rollers that I normally use.

I feel the same with the version I tested from DHGate, which is of a bit different design. This one isn't intended to spin, as far as I know, more to aid in heat retention and increase surface area. But, I found myself needing to crank up my controller about 50-75 degrees hotter and it seemed less efficient... Or at least not what I'm looking for when dabbing. I prefer a single 5-6 mm pearl... just enough to agitate the oil but not create any kind of unnecessary turbulence.

Are you using a standard clear quartz pearl? I'm wondering how much it affects flavour, because I think I get better flavour without it, but I really need to try some of the ruby/sapphire pearls to compare.

I've been playing with a 6mm clear quartz recently, but typically use a 5mm ruby. To be honest, I haven't noticed much difference in flavor between them. I'd give the smaller ruby an edge for the first couple puffs, though. The 6mm (and larger) do seem to help with oil dispersion and quicker vaporization. However, anything over 6mm and my banger looks like a mess and has more cleanup, especially on the full opaque.

The main reason that I purchased a 30mm banger and coil was to be able to 'finish off' the 6ml sauce jars I get all my work samples in. I don't like holding the insert at a constant temperature because it will take a long time to come up to temp and then spike as it passes the point of optimal (for flavor's sake) heat. Instead for uptemp insert drops I try to emulate a torched banger. I like to get the insert up to temperature to produce vapor while letting the banger cool down to prevent the insert from 'over temping' so there are really two heat curves - the heat of the banger/coil and the heat of the insert.

With an e-nail I just set my particular box to 680-700 degrees (your temps may vary) and drop in the (alcohol wiped) jar, set the cap on it, and shut off power to the coil. Temp on the coil starts to fall and the temp on the insert starts to come up. Once there's vapor coming off the jar I start drawing and usually get 2-3 nice draws out of a mostly empty jar.

@SamuraiSam How thick is the bottom of the sauce jar? I've tried that exact same technique with the 4mm opaque insert, and although it was an attempt to emulate the torch, I just couldn't get it there. Not even close, everything was just too slow. Heating up 4mm of opaque via conduction and radiant heat takes some good energy.

Would you be able to try the tech with an opaque insert and see how it compares to your sauce jar?

This is my current cold insert drop tech.
rdk-300, 30mm axial coil, 30mm clear banger, clear slotted insert, 6mm pearl, headshop bubblecap.
Drop the preloaded insert at 535 and while capped, wait to start pulling until coil temp has returned to 535. Heat up takes about 40-60 seconds.
I'd like to try lower temps later but have to be an adult for a while.

Questions about ISO bath with inserts...
What percentage ISO are you using? What do you keep the ISO in? How long do you let it soak? Air dry or ?

I'd like to cut down on the amount of Q Tips I use, apologies for the onslaught on questions

What percentage ISO are you using?

99% (Costco)

What do you keep the ISO in?

Shot glass

How long do you let it soak?

Whatever...sometimes just seconds, sometimes minutes... the magic happens pretty instantly with the materials I use. Rosin is a mofo and I found I still need to qtip scrub.

Air dry or ?

I'm still waiting on more opaque dishes in stock so i'm just rinsing under hot water and then paper towel dry wipe and good to go! Once I have a 1/2 dozen dishes it will be way easier... including pre-weighing for the day accountability!

It has definitely cut mine down!

Thanks for sharing your drop tech, have you tried with opaque?

I haven't had the pleasure yet. I'd like to try some clear inserts for the 25mm to compare sizing first.
Gotta pay down this credit card a bit first.

How do we like slotted vs non slotted?
I enjoy the slotted because my banger stays pretty clean doing cold drops and have gotten used to how to use the bubble cap. I haven't tried non slotted yet, maybe too short?

Side question, what's the color like on your colored pi bubble cap? I'd like to get a greenish colored one but they seem to be a bit of a scattershot as far as color consistency. Almost zero glass blowing knowledge though.

Using so many q-tips has been bothering me, I'm definitely going to see about using the inserts and then cleaning them right after. I haven't really been using them much for some reason, need to try them out some more.

I just ordered another mood mat for my other glass, a shirt, and the new opaque spinner to try out. I have a feeling I'll like the terp pearls more, but it will be fun to test it out.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Curious, what makes you say the caps seem to be scattershot regarding color consistency? I hadn't seen/heard that before.

Are you talking about how colors like Serum and Voodoo look like different colors in different pics? If so, it's because those are CFL changing colors, meaning they change colors when they are under fluorescent lighting vs natural lighting. The two colors in the pics are there to show the color under fluorescent and non-fluorescent lighting.

I have a Potion colored cap from Quartz Pi and love it. In fluorescent lighting it's a rich purple. In natural light it's sort of a blue/purplish tone, and it can even look green under the right spectrum of lighting.

I don't think Shane has had any green colored caps in stock in a while, not since those Haterade's a while back. But man, that Peacock he has in stock looks amazing! Glad there isn't a 30mm version in stock, it might have accidently found its way to my mailbox! But you can reach out to him, he might be able to request one in the next batch.

What does this mean? All I see is Constant Gems selling axial coils for $125? Are they going to stock Shane's bangers too? Does that mean they will cost $90?

They don't have Shane's stuff on the website yet, they just had a post on IG about it. The post said they'd be selling the coil and banger starting at $125. Slightly more expensive than from Shane directly.

But it gets his name out there to tons of more people, which is obviously a good thing. Nothing wrong with a collab! I'm sure some people will then seek out Shane directly.

Maybe Shane will start stocking a few rubies and sapphires? It just gives people more options, and they can get things all in one place if they so chose.

HI Sam - cool idea....but I only have 25 mm bangers! haha So, you still at ECC? Doing well? Good to hear from you.

@710Coils - Hi Shane, this thread moves so fast I haven't had time to keep up with it but I am surely continuing to use and enjoy my 25 mm bangers. Use the opaque really with the clear in on-deck position.

I don't use the inserts I have as...well, I'm lazy and like it simple. I'm getting good, very clean, regulated and tested concentrates in my med legal state now and I just dab them right on the surface to very good results.

Please give your bride my warmest best wishes.

Cheers

Constant Gems wanted to purchase some stuff from me for their site. I did not realize how expensive they were going to sell it at and will most likely not be selling them more of my gear due to this. Who the hell pays 125.00 for an axial coil????? It looks like he has only slightly marked my gear up and is selling them as sets. So I guess we will see how he does and go from there

I have done a considerable amount of learning as I have been on this path and so far the main things have been

1: No one cares about customer service and so no one offers it since they consider it a waste of time
2: Most have no qualms selling something for an insane amount more than you do and think its acceptable business practices
3: Deny all ownership of issues unless the customer is pushing hard. Never give up stock unless you utterly have to. Every dollar is a confirmation that its ok to be underhanded

I guess the reason I am doing so well is the fact I deny to follow the above standards other companies have set as the norm. Makes me proud of my morals, but also very sad that its such a hard thing for other companies to care enough to think of things long term and not just about the moment

I apologize for my ranting, I just have been shocked about what companies consider the acceptable standard for their customers and products

Your ever loyal coil and quartz monger

Shane
