yes i did think about it , but we need to get a mold and slump the glass in the kiln, so spending the cash on enough molds to make a kiln run worthwhile didnt make sense.
yea we tried that - colie hooked me up w. some discs but when we firepolished it all the holes closed up .
so it was either don't polish it and risk dust flaking off or wait for another method -

hey man, i just can't sell the tubes w. the decal on em. that would violate our product agreement w. my customers - they gotta eat too - but i can get you a kick ass deal on a blank tube, but if you want a "brand" you gotta pay to play - that way everyone is happy ( mostly ).

i think the idea is to not let the piece get totally caked but to concentrate that into a certain area.
mold would be a concern if you left the piece w/ moisture in it in a dark place ( which is where most ppl leave their pcs i would assume )
not sure about actual classes but there are tons of shops in socal u could always offer to work/trade for lessons most shops are always looking for a shop "bitch" to clean up and prep stuff

thats the risk factor - i would just cut off the joint and flame cut the whole can off and replace w another keeping intact the perc so it would look good as new
