Apparently smoking paralyzes the cilia, preventing them from pushing the gunk out of one's lungs, but once one is not smoking, the THC has an expectorant effect, which would cause more productive coughs.

As someone who has ongoing sleep issues - I feel your pain. Melatonin did nothing for me, but MJ works great! I just wanted to suggest difficulty sleeping can have many causes. Best to get to the root of it if possible.
