that ziricote looks sick Alan.

OTA glad your enjoying those hash session. i love them too and the HI handy it so well and without too much of a mess.

sticks glad you got the HIon to work out :D

i think i need to cut back on concentrates for awhile, my tolerance is through the roof right now.

i also took the HI totally apart for the first time too, i must say i really like how the HI is put together without any glues, just held together by stoner magic. hahah

I was tempted to check out the insides of mine too yesterday, but I wasn't sure if taking it apart unnecessary will wear out the thread in the wood eventually, so I resisted for now. I did take out the 90 degree plug in the bottom to give ET a bit of polishing with some Underbutter, I hope this isn't considered blasphemy..

How do you take out the metals bits btw? Can the core just be pulled out when the heating element is removed, or is that part meant to stay in place?

I think yours may be the bad boy of the two after all btw, Boobs. Mine has been nothing but good since it got here.

Talking about tolerance, I bought a Ti nail & dome recently and my SSTB arrived just this week....I'm afraid my tolerance will be even worse soon

once i unscrewed the core, i used a wooden chop stick to push up from the hole of the core. the hard part for me was getting it back in. i had to find a socket that would fit in the middle to push down the big tube.

careful with the dabbing that shit does kill your herb tolerance. but the highs are so amazing :D

yupyup...I'm all about this HIon now. Just hit it again. Used about 1/4 full on my 14mm gong HI stem and got a great buzz for such a little amount. And then my abv was still light brown/green. Airflow was great...the Ion was stacking up like crazy.

i think the ion actually stacks better with a 14mm adapter attached, especially with the HI bowl i get crazy stackage. i knew you would like the HIon combo, just have to find that sweet spot on the vv.

Boobs...twice now I have gotten blowback from the ion that spits the load up. You get that?

i get that with pretty much all bubs. you need to remember to release the tube from mouth before placing bowl back or the pressure of the water leveling back out will blow out your bowl.

yeah also, don't stop pulling on your glass until you pull the bowl to clear. if you stop short in sucking your herbs gonna jump outa it's THC.

I still don't get that Sticks only just started using water, what took you so long man? ;)

Have you figured out how to use the rest of your vapes with your Mobius yet? The Solo is great with water too :haw:

Cool pic Boobs

Sadly I'll only be able to do one or two BHO runs per year, so I'll probably try to stretch that over a whole year and use it sparsely. Or just finish it all at once and be done with it, we'll see

I can't buy oils or waxes here, only pressed hash. They are considered just as illegal over here as heroine

Wow really dig the latest pics you posted Alan, the Cocobolo and Ziricote are super dense and I feel these tougher woods turn better and finish so sleek. The Cocobolo is by far one of my favorites, I often find it has really beautiful contrasting grain colors and the shine it naturally has is awesome!

Looks like you have the ziricote screwed on the head stock, is that what you have done?

OhTheAgony - Thanks for the offer. They may frown on you sending me some. Hopefully someday it will be more available for all.
I was taught lathe basics way back in junior high school. It was either spindle turning or bowl turning with a face plate. The 4 jaw chucks are making so much more possible today. It allows me to bore into both ends of the wood and one smaller hole all the way through the middle. Sometimes you have to make your own special tools for turning things.
This is the first I have worked with Ziricote. It turns pretty well and finishes nicely.

bOObs - Thanks. Looks like you are very handy with that HI. Glad to see you were able to take everything apart and put it back together alright. Very cool that the design allows you to do that. lol @ Stoner Magic.

stickstones - I must have missed the explanation of the Ion thing. Was it discussed somewhere?

Ed - Thanks. Cocobolo seems to always be beautiful. Never found an ugly piece yet. My very first wood pipe was made from cocobolo.
The Ziricote units is actually jamb chucked onto the lathe. I just have a 3/8" straight rod sticking out of the head stock that is jammed into the 3/8" hole drilled through the center of the wood. The friction between the rod and the wood is sufficient to drive the wood. This is the final step for turning the wood that allows the body to be so smooth with no sign of jaw marks. The boring operations are done with a 4 jaw chuck. I always like to use the jaws in compression rather than expanding into hole. It is so easy to break the wood by expanding the jaws. I was actually jamb chucking for a while before I even knew what it had a name. I just try stuff and see if it works. Have had to figure all the turning techniques out by myself. It has been fun.

Well done, everyusername! You won't be disappointed--the HI is well worth the wait.

I haven't posted much recently, mostly because I've been busy, but also because, when I'm not busy, I'm wielding my HIsaber. It's my #1 vape of choice these days.

I guess a long-winded explanation is in order.

I bought my HI back in January, I think, and it immediately replaced all my log vapes, which were my daily drivers. Then I got a Solo and started using it most of the time and used the HI for my nightcaps. The problem was I was using a grind that was too fine for these vapes and I got some horrible coughing fits. At that point I decided to use water filtration only, and that meant my Cloud beta with its HT since I didn't have any glass to put my other vapes on. So I fell in love with my Cloud and water filtration and didn't want to go back. The HI got shelved and the Solo got very little use as I started a quest for a nice bubbler for all these pieces I could use with it (Cloud, HI, PD, Solo, MFLB, Extreme, VG cap). This took me fucking FOREVER! Finally I got a mobius matrix Ion and started using it with my Cloud and fell in love. I also started using my grinder again to get a coarser grind instead of the coffee grinder I had been using. I used the HI with it next but had the VVPS too high and combusted. So I went back to my Cloud since it was so easy, consistent and enjoyable. I really didn't think I was going to use anything else when my wife told me she could hear it outside my teen's bedroom (I have a beta Cloud that is louder than the production units). So I pm'd boobs and he graciously walked me through getting the VVPS set and where to set it for brainless operation. So now I am enjoying the HIon for the first time! It hits hard, extracts everything quickly and does it very efficiently. I still want to get it a little hotter because I want my abv a little bit darker, but I can't complain about that...I'll get there.

I don't mind the wait so much as I've got a UD that does a brilliant job of keeping me medicated. I am a bit disappointed that you've received yours already, your waiting made the last 50 pages of this thread very enjoyable to read!

Hahahaha! I'm glad my spiral into HIDS-induced insanity entertained you. :freak:

Sorry my climb back to clarity leaves my posts a bit dry. I admit I've been more laid back since becoming a JedHI. But with age, a beautifully-turned HI, some outstanding meds, a bong, water, a grinder, a bOObs-inspired paperclip poker/stirrer thingy, a slick-ass Hildbrandt VVPS, and maybe some ice for the bong if I can sneak it upstairs past my kid, comes a certain degree of clarity from which I don't feel the need to be cute with my posts.

And yes, I'm fried. I'm excited to see what Alan turns for you.

Ok, something needs to change. Primarily, this waiting list. Specifically, you people in front of me...

Congratulations! You all won a free trip to Timbuktu! To redeem, please check in at the DMZ. Be sure to walk due N, with a S Korea flag, as identification. Waving it will get the attention of a free attendant, who will assist you immediately.

Wish I had time to catch up to the thread.. Been so busy, especially with this sick kitten.

Your HIDS-induced insanity did entertain me, but it is good that you are now content. It sounds as though you have everything you need handy (with the exception of an upstairs ice maker) ... I feel you there, my 100ml EHLE stays hidden away until all my kids are asleep, but as they are night owls like me and the eldest is often up til ~midnight by the time they sleep getting water and ice seems harder than climbing Everest :ko: ... It is a good day to be fried.

I also cannot wait to see what Alan turns, I'll have to think about wood options (something exotic might be nice) but there is plenty of time for all that!

But we call it...HI-Lander.

I want to play McCleod (Christopher Lambert). Alan can play Ramirez (Sean Connery). The Kurgan role is up for grabs...

Instead of the "quickening" we'll experience the "bakening." We all wield HIs instead of swords.

And we're all immortal, silently moving through the centuries (extremely high the whole time), struggling to reach "The Gathering," when the few who remain (awake) battle to the last bubbler rip.

The last one awake receives "The Prize": A gorgeous, exotic HI and shit ton of roasting material.

Thoughts?

everyusername - Thanks for hoping on the list. Hope you have an enjoyable time here during the wait.

Vapinghole - Nice to hear your HIsaber is serving you well. Sounds like you are getting everything fine tuned.

stickstones - I'm glad to hear you gave the HI another try. A fine grind does increase the potential for combustion since it does not allow very good air flow. A very slow draw speed can also increase the potential. bOObs has a good technique of bouncing the HI off the end of the tube to control temperature. I guess that would be the "bouncing bOObs" method. You should be able to use the HI at full power and just control the temperature by mixing room air. Then you can get it as dark roasted as you like. I like to have the full range of temperature instantly available. I would say that bOObs is a JedHI master the way he has been instructing the use of the HIsaber. He also re-assembled his own HIsaber.

Jeppy - I will never again have to worry about being bored. Only about getting enough sleep.

BigDaddyVapor - Sorry to hear about your sick kitten. Hope it gets better soon.

that bouncing boobs technique is what fucked me up...too advanced for this young padawan. He got me worked up enough to find the right temp to let it sit there without combusting. Now it is up to me to slowly up the power to get the color I want. But to be honest, I don't think I want to. The miser in me has always gotten his herb spent beyond use, and the duff I am getting now might be of some use down the road. What I love about the current setup is the extraction and efficiency. The load gets cached pretty quickly and won't produce any more vapor. I hate it when my vape keeps pushing out whispy vapor because I can't resist the urge to keep pulling instead of throwing it aside for cooking and moving on to another bowl. I also love the freeflow of air with no sound!

Hopefully, but I'm not sure if either of us will live long enough to see that day to be honest :(

So are these 4 jaw chucks like you call them the new standard then, or is it just a different type of lathe? It sure looks a lot more convenient, but on the other side also a little less secure just from looking at it.

Gotcha. I just assumed you had troubles mating the vape with a GonG connection, but I guess it was a little more complicated than that.

I believe the vv psu you are using runs up to 12,4V or something in that neighborhood, right? I'm a little surprised that that isn't hot enough to darken your ABV. The max I use my HI on is 11,8V and at that voltage I have to stir after every hit to prevent it from getting to black. You must have a cool runner, you could consider a vv psu with a higher voltage output. Perhaps something like Rick is supplying if you don't want to spend to much.

Are you still looking in to those as well Alan?

Thanks CHIDOY. Here is another one still on the lathe. The wood is Ziricote.

That wood, is GORGEOUS. (and how much would that one cost?)

My mother-in-law lives up near Yosemite. Her neighbor likes to walk through the woods, all the time and he picks up and/or digs up unique pieces (He dug up a weird "pod", I swear looked like some alien life stealing monster... supposedly its wood). I asked her if she could request a few pieces. I asked for about 12" long 8" in diameter. I'm assuming, unless there's a large flaw... that should be sufficient to work with? If people supply extra amounts of quality hardwood, do you cut discounts? I did a search for "discount" thread only... nothing came up, that was pertinent. Though, the price in shipping the wood... might offset the savings. Don't really know... just something I thought of, since the guy makes some really gorgeous pieces, from really nice wood.

BDV, I think you better leave the 'wood picken' to the master. He knows the moisture content and all specifics that go into picking and creating a HI that performs to 'Great Vape's' standards. Start saving your pennies now, because when your number comes up,,,,,,you want to be ready to engage in the 'HI Life'.
