I'm also getting my air from inside the heat shield. instead of up the rear.
That second part probably accounts for the difference. Air entering from inside the front recess will be even hotter than air entering from the rear of the core. Good to know, ty!

Edit:

I've had a few emails asking for directions - I actually don't have written / printed directions. There are several tutorials on youtube, as well as a closeup of the wire that's hard to see in videos. All of this info has been updated and published to my site, here:

Please let me know if/what I'm missing, and I will be happy to add. If anyone has a great tutorial or instructional video and wants to be featured on my site, please feel free to submit your work to share :)

Well folks I’m late to the party, but been lurking and got my HLT working. I posted a video on Reddit here.
Also have a draft of an assembly diagram that I threw together and sent Red yesterday. He had some feedback and after I make the suggested changes I’ll throw a link out here too for feedback.
Have a new 12inch Grav Beaker on order and can’t wait to see what this device can really do!

Hey @RedEyeFlightControl ,
Any word on when you'll have replacement parts in?
I've been lovin this beast since Friday.
I got home today and decided I was gonna "center" the bulb and the unthinkable happened...

I barely touched the the table but it was enough to throw the black outer tube off balance and right to the tile floor.

I'm so pissed at myself right now!

So I’ve read through about 25% of this whole thread. Saw some different thermal imaging, and some options for a heat shield. Got me thinking

My other hobby is smoking …meat…. So I have a variety of toys including this wonderful griddle and pizza stone temp gun.

So at 6.6V being stored on a 19 male adapter, upright for a few hours…highest temp I got on the outside of the heater core was 379.

So I ordered one of these. Good for temps up to 475 for extended times.

Amazon Basics Silicone Hot Skillet Handle Cover Holder, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01L7XWM2C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_ND499592Z5GC7JB0NAPK

So would you cut the end off to make a sleeve leaving the top open? I hope it works! My heater core broke already as well, after some heavy use for a few days. My cat finally managed to break something vape-related.

This silicone sleeve idea seems nice. I already ordered a handle from rogue wax works, but maybe the handle and sleeve could be used in conjunction. Part of me thinks the silicone at that area may get about as hot as the glass underneath. The light is still a tiny bit bright through the glass for sensitive eyes so it may be worth it for that alone.

in order to keep the airflow, yes cut off one end, secure somehow to the core. There are other colors available that may allow the light to shine through for those that like it that way.

Im also thinking about a few other similar materials that would be inexpensive, insulate from the heat, increase thermal mass, and yes protect from drops!

I’m not expecting a quick easy solution but ya never know what I’ll come up with next!

Do note that the color of the glass plays a role in heater efficacy. The next best performer was Cobalt Blue. Lighter tubes do not retain as much heat, which is why black was selected. You will likely see a small but noticeable performance hit from lighter colored glass. Black loves to absorb radiation, so we use that to our advantage.

I meant colored silicone handles. For example.

I know. I just wanted to point this out, in case others were considering different color glass. A silicone wrap will probably give back way more insulation than black glass, so you may be on to something there. Just some characteristics for consideration.

Doing my best to do these weekly. Right now it's dependent on what parts I have in stock. I'm STILL waiting on a glass order from 2 months ago which is critical to processing kits past the next 2-3 drops, otherwise I'm going to have to get creative again.

I'm currently working on procuring commercial levels of parts so stock becomes a non-issue going forward. Right now stock availability is based on these first drops to ensure the product is commercially viable and sustainable over long term. Because this business is in startup mode. these drops are seeding growth to keep this and other projects going. There are a lot more moving parts than most people realize! Nearly everything is long, long hours and reinvestment at this point. I'm routinely working into the wee hours every night after my day job to coordinate all of this, while still building kits out, and managing my own retail presence... all while working 40+ hours a week FTE and managing a house full of kids and pets. The Lab is my fun side project; it's a passion project I built because I LOVE seeing other people genuinely smile when they use something I made. It warms my heart and you just can't buy that kind of goodwill.

It's nice to see some light at the end of the guessing game tunnel, though! Thank goodness for cannabinoids!!!

Reverted to original form. I may try to cut this down again and see the impact of just using it on the top or bottom half. I think the overall thermal mass was almost too much and eventually the silicone got warm even at the top of the tube.

so new glass, new video. Love this dang thing so far. Rips much better on some decent glass.

After some more tinkering with the joint fit and the herb chamber...
I'm down to 5.43V with about a half hour of heat soak. Power supply barely gets warm where it was downright hot before.

edit, Just realized I can grab the shield at the top comfortably. Before I had to grab it from the lower half.

Five vertical slits in the core.
First pic you can see the cuts.
Second pic you can see the light shining through them.
