Grasshopper AC Adapter Kit (and 18650)

So as some of you may be aware, we are developing a kit to allow people to use an external wall power supply or an external 18650 battery to power their Grasshoppers.

As this will likely be something we only do a single manufacturing run for, I want to make sure I get all of the numbers right on the first try. I have put up a pre-order / reservation link on our website for $39 to reserve a kit.

Kit Includes:
  • SS316 Grasshopper Body Extension
  • Dummy Battery Insert with XT30 Connector
  • Custom 4.2V Power Converter
  • 120/240V Wall Adapter
  • 2x 18650 Battery Sled
* Parts Subject to Change

This is a Pre-Order / Reservation Item, the final cost of this product has not yet been determined.

Retail price is expected to be $79 - $99. Remaining balance will be due upon shipping.

The item shown in the photos is a body extension tube for the grasshopper, which allows us to run wires into the body without modification of the grasshopper itself. This particular prototype was just a thread test, the production piece is a little longer and has a knurled section to make it easier to remove.

As we receive the power boards and dummy batteries back, I will post photos of them also.

You can reserve your kit here https://maxvapornail.com/collection...r-kit-reservation-only?variant=31635924746330

Estimated Ship Date: Late January 2020

Just reserved mine. How long of a cord do you think it'll have?

Hope you're right and it works with GHv2. So many new hopper toys in 2020! :)

Been waiting for this since the Hopper was released. I'll definitely be ordering one when I can free up the funds.

Reservation order placed... I’m hopeful it will be available with a UK wall plug for those of us across the pond.

How will the power lead terminate? Planning on a DC Jack or something for easy adaptation to different mains plugs/outlets?

There was talk of USB-C power delivery - is that possible?

@On_Weed the cable from the hopper to the power converter is about 10 inches but the actual power cord after that can be as long as you like.

@fachada I will see if we can get that fixed later today.

@Terpenetime yes it will.

@MoltenTiger

The current Dummy Battery wires terminate in an XT30 connector. We have a small power converter which has the opposite XT30 mating connector on one side and a barrel jack on the other, this will take standard 12VDC and convert to 4.2V for the hopper.

Regarding USB-C PD, it is still possible but is more expensive and more complex to manufacture (4 layer boards, expensive inductors and PD controllers, larger form factor, 85 Watt wall brick, etc. So to keep the initial cost down we decided to go with a more standard power supply for now. Things may change once we have all of the remaining components in hand.

All that and the 18650 sled, I need to go sign up!

Hey, if my back end wasn't disassembled beyond repair and you don't need it, I was thinking of sending in that unit in for RMA and charity gifting it.

Sounds great, a must have accessory. Having a constant 4.2V source will be a nice improvement I think! And the XT30 allows for some interesting options for sure.

USB-C would be really cool, but probably not a real improvement, the simple 2 pin from the battery will do the job.

I can vouch for JLC PCB for decent price 4 layer boards.

@MonkeyTime I believe it might be beyond repair, but I can check with the guys later today.

Of course both you and @ChooChooCharlie are entitled to a free unit as we wouldn't have been able to complete this project without your help.

Just send us an email and I will get you put on the list.
Just placed my pre-order.

Very cool and done very fast.

Looking forward to receiving it.

Cheers

Just a dude
Gonna place mine tonight as well, excited to have this in the vape toolbox! Thanks for doing this, it's gonna be a HUGE insurance policy for so many Hopperheads. Definitely looking forward to the development and like Baron says, that's super fast turnaround. Seems to be the way @maxvapor710 operates, I'm a fan for sure. Absolutely loving my lil red controller since I got it, I feel like a boss. I wish you guys made more stuff for me to buy, so yeah - if you could make that happen and get those TPS reports in, that'd be great. Thanks Peter.

Earthling flora is... fascinating.
I saw in the Hopper thread that you said the original plan was a complete backend replacement. Was that going to be too much work to do in the end, or would have it have simply been too cost prohibitive? Honestly, I'm curious of the whole process, since this is something I could have never come up with on my own. Been checking for updates since I saw you mention it, and I'm stoked that I can finally pre-order this! I'm so glad I found FC, because I was convinced I had bought an expensive paperweight after the battery situation. :rofl:

And I second @pxl_jockey, I know where to go when I have a consistent source of concentrates.

We felt this option was more versatile to those not wishing to lock themselves into a USB-C powered backend replacement, which is what the original prototype was.

With an extension ring and dummy battery, users can use their own battery packs or power supplies however they want.
