Rosin Technique....Easy DIY Solventless

I wondered if it was high thc/low terpenes?

I think this may have a lot to do with it. I had some rosin sit in a silicone container for quite a while and it went from sap>budder>crumble, the terpenes pretty much got evaporated and all was left was a medicinal tasting crumble that had that distillate like jolt. I don't store in silicone anymore, mostly because of that incident, but it makes me wanna do a little test, specifically with weights, to see if I can measure the terpene yield loss as it changes.

@shredder that is good to hear about your gorilla glue, I've never tried that cultivar before but always heard of people being disappointed with how sappy it is and difficult to collect. Maybe I'll try pressing the pennywise lower to see if I can get it to do something other than smear onto the parchment. I may just ice water hash it all and vape it in my flowerpot instead :hmm:

Anyone here press older genetics like skunk #1, jack herer, NL5?

The last 2-3 pages here has been very helpful to me. I just started pressing and was wondering what the current thoughts were on rosin consistency and how to manipulate it. I'll probably start reading backwards on this thread for a while.

I've pressed a few different strains, but right now my bulk of flower comes from two strains.

I have a bunch of Blue Dream that tastes amazing, like the spiced gumdrops you get around Christmas, but at 190-195F for 2+ minutes will instantly turn to glass shatter on the paper. Seconds after coming off the plates, a dabber with plow through the rosin like a snowplough clearing glare ice. I have to hold the paper over the plates briefly and then quickly start swiping and then repeat. I collected about a half gram in a glass jar and tried heating then whipping it. All that did was give me a jar smeared with a sea of glass hard shatter that explodes when you hit it with a dab tool. I use my nearby trusty e-nano to heat up the dab tool before going in.

I also have a bunch of Bubba Kush that was a homegrow from about 1.5 years ago. Cured slowly and kept with 62% Boveda in vacuum sealed mason jars. That shit has a smell all to its own and is by far the smelliest (in a good way) and the stoniest indica I've vaped. The problem is it stinks up the house when handled or vaped. Anyway, using the same methods, that rosin comes out runny and does not firm up unless you have it on something out of the freezer.

I'm going to try raising my pressing temp to around 200F and see what happens.

Was pressing a bit with my son last night and he asked me the same question. I never really considered it - but then I'm a 3pc grinder type.
Also wondering if anyone has water cured post-press pucks before an alcohol wash? Worthwhile or not?

I just pressed out the last of my trim (5 strain mix), 11% return, tons of sugar leaf, bronze and sappy. Funny how this is more potent than my single strain nug runs. I know @shredder
presses mixes occasionally, anyone else get into that?

One thing ive been doing is to put any "dirty" rosin aside. Rather than pick out junk while I collect. When I have enough, like several grams worth, I repress with a fine mesh bag to clean up any plant materials.

Results can be interesting.

Is there a result you're trying to achieve? I guess I don't see what would be gained. It's cured before pressing, a second cure may only break up your pucks and make a mess!

I'm planning to do a long alcohol wash which will eventually be added to CBD islolate MCT oil based tincture and was hoping to avoid as much unwanted taste as possible. I've done similar with log stem reclaim - but these pucks are a little different story.

If the reclaim seemed to lose some terpines thru another decarb, try it!

The other thing you could try is the wash, then decarb that result?
But the more heat, the more you're breaking down thc as well....

I'm fine with decarb post extraction (I do this with rosin for edibles) and will be required for this extraction as the source is not thouroghly decarbed. The stem reclaim doesn't require decarb. It vapes ok, but has almost no flavor at all. I'm not looking for great flavor from the puck extraction - but I don't want to taste chlorophyll. I think a sample run with a couple pucks is in order before I do the full jar.

I tried with a little long flowering SSH. At lower temps it budders up immediately.
I do not like it to collect in this state and it seems to loose taste fast.
At higher temps (up tp 210°F for now) it comes out runny, sappy but goes into a more collectable sticky texture later before it budders up finally.
Humidity might play a role too in my case I guess.

I make so little there is not more than a dab or two that budders up. So i do not know how it would evolve.
What is interesting to me is that the smell of the rosin gets much better after a while after pressing.

I tried to press a couple quality CBD buds, too. None has buttered up yet. The change of smell after pressing was not yet so dramatic.
Some are very sappy. Ordered some bulk CBD flowers to try some more. We will see.

Everything too sappy got ready to collect after a couple of hours to days open on the parchment. No need to specially cool, up to now.

It is fascinating.

Anyone use a specific cooling collection plate like this;

I'm still only doing presses of less than 2g because I just don't need that much rosin (lightweight) and I am still fearful I will F something up and waste good weed. I pressed more Blue Dream and ended up with 18% return with a whole lot coming from the second press.

1.8g pre-pressed gave me .17g on the first press at 200F, .12g on the second press at 220F, and then, cause it's fun and I'm stingy, .04g on the third press at 220F. The rosin is always the same dark color and consistency no matter what press, the temp or the pressure. Still, very tasty and very strong rosin.

I now have about .5g of this rosin, which is like hard candy, and I'm going to try leaving it on the bottom plate at 120F for a few hours and see if I can get a more workable consistency.

I am a noob with a very small operation, but I'm having fun. Great info on this thread.

Not sure why one would want to spend this much money for home use.

I take either a metal clip board, e.g. https://www.amazon.com/Saunders-Rec...0&s=gateway&sprefix=metal+clip,aps,123&sr=8-4

or for $20 this: https://www.rosinpressny.com/View/ROSIN-COLLECTION-PLATE

If its very warm, just pop them in the fridge or freezer for a bit. I find it doesn't take much of a cold sink to set up rosin after pressing.

Some people will spend over $1k just for a hand pump or multi-thousands on a press. so US50 does not seem too expensive.
I thought it would be good to sit your beer on too.

Probably would be good for beer! haha

Sorry, my bad. I didn't follow the link to see that it was just $60. But again, I do think its gilding the lily a bit but I have spent more on less...no doubt! haha :science:

Whoa! $40/gram!! Now this is shatter or live resin, right?

Little bit of a funny story....went to CHAMPS in Vegas this past Feb with "The Vape Critic" Bud and his wife, Hazel (nom de guerre) and our first stop out of the airport was a dispensary. We are looking things over, whiffing at the look and smell containers, and ordering this and that. There was one top draw flower that they had, Kosher Tangie, that had the very best smell so at the very last second I said to the clerk, "just throw one of those grams of KT in too, please"

So, we get to the hotel and while Hazel is brutalizing the MGM manager because they didn't have the rooms that she specifically ordered (I mean, Hazel was in the right), Bud and I decided to look at the receipt and settle up as we did the purchase all together.

As he's adding it up, he says to me "you actually paid $39 for a gram of flower!!. My eyes popped wide and I said "I did whaaaaaat!!" LOL

It was super good...we rolled a blunt out of it....but $40/gram for FLOWER is far too rich for my blood. haha
