I'd wash the ABV. It might eliminate the need to wash further.

So, giving a go at washing the ABV now. Started yesterday. Picked up 3 yards of cheesecloth. Seemed the easiest way.

Somewhere along the lines here I read about someone being interested in hearing about total dissolved solid counts during a wash.

I have a cheap TDS meter and have been taking readings when I change the water. I'm not being super precise, but I'm getting an idea.

My tap water gave me a reading of 125 ppm TDS.

The first wash, TDS was 501 initially and went up to 530 ppm over the first 3 hours.
(Fell asleep on the couch for a while)
Then at 233 am (didn't record initial start time) I got a reading of 177 ppm. But that's inaccurate, as all the particles had settled by then, but I didn't think of that at the time.
Next morning (today), 846am before I drained the water off, I stirred the bowl before the TDS reading. Got 282 ppm.
Then at 239 pm, same deal, with a stir, I got 186 ppm.

Now just now, 824 pm, with a stir I got 182 ppm.

So it seems that it's leveling out a bit now.

If anyone's interested, I'll post more results in the morning, but I'm thinking if it's 165-180 ppm, I'm just going to call it done.

I have
Results of today for washing the ABV.

738 am, got 177 ppm TDS with a stir.
1252 pm got 166 ppm TDS.
151 pm, final reading, got 152 ppm.

Got the ABV in the oven now on a cookie sheet at 160° F.

Think I'm going to make some changes canna oil first.
How long will you dry it at 160* F? I'm a few days in on an ABV wash. You are far more detailed in your process.
Major respect, from me to you, for your detailed involvement on the thread. You add a great deal to the conversation.

I'm definitely playing it by ear for how long I'll dry it. The ABV has been in the oven since about 2 pm, and it still has a bit of moisture to it. So, 4 hours isn't quite long enough it seems.

Update: pulled it out of the oven now. So it took about 5 hours 40 minutes.

The weight dropped from 37.5 to 22.6g. I think I lost a bunch of really fine sediment in the washing. But also water weight loss for sure.

I've read in a couple posts to freeze the ABV overnight, and that the processes crystallizes the cannabinoids for better extraction. I'm not sure about that, but I suppose it couldn't hurt.

Thanks very much for the kind words @Madri-Gal. So far I'm thoroughly enjoying this forum.
I'm still working my way through the EQ thread, and have been learning loads of useful stuff about the Q and vaporizing in general.

I read the thread when I started. I never thought I'd finish, then I missed it when I was finished. I still think the EQ is a great vape, at a great price. Better with @DDave mods, but still pretty awesome anyway.
I've got one more day on my ABV wash, then need to dry. I've washed ABV before , and it was still pretty potent. I didn't need to dry it then, but it helps to know it can take so long.

It was the first time washing for me. Had no clue how long it would take. The article I was looking at, the guy was drying 150g, and he said it took all day. I kept asking my wife to feel the ABV as well, so I had a second input for when it got dry.

I'm pretty sure the wash won't effect potency from what I've read. Cannabinoids aren't water soluble. So as long as your wash isn't hot enough to boil them, you're good to go. And with cold water, it's a non-issue.

Also, on the freezing; it seems that when the cannabinoids freeze and crystallize, they pierce the cell walls that contain them, increasing the bioavailability during extraction.

As for reading the thread, I'm totally fascinated. I'm new to vaping, and reading through the thread is more than just tips and tricks for the Q. I'm fast tracking the developments in the vaping world in the process. There's so much I didn't know. And I almost feel like I'm an expert already. I'm not, but I can already answer almost every standard question regarding the EQ that comes up.

I'm in May 2012 (page 164) and I keep wanting to reply to questions 6 years old.

I just ran into a very, very unique post today:

I agree with both of you. The @DDave mods are fantastic. I was a hardcore bong smoker before, and the Q was a bit lacklustre for me to start (partially due to lack of experience, but also due to functionality), but I ordered the DDave kit almost as soon as I got my EQ. And it really made all the difference for me. From getting the wand/elbow pack closer to the heater core, to the straight through wands, silicone tubing, 14 and 18mm GonG adapters, glass filtered stems and more ... Better airflow through the adapters. And simple as it is, the extra length of thicker split silicone tubing to support the more flexible tubing is amazing.

I do not regret spending a penny on the complete V3 kit.

Also to note, I haven't had to use my inhaler in over a month now. My cardio is improving and my lungs feel cleaner.

Great news about your lungs. I'd never vaped before I got my Arizer EQ last January. I hadn't been smoking long either. It helped my headaches, but not my asthma. So glad I found FC and vaping. My lung function is much improved, and I rarely need my rescue inhaler. This site, and the members on it, have taught me a great deal by the comments and information they post. You really won't meet a nicer group of people than are on here and Vapor Asylum.

CANNABIS would B like COFFEE (legal status wise)

The “Q” is priced reasonably as well!

Finally received my replacement EQ from Arizer. I really enjoyed using the bags again. My first EQ lasted 7 years. So if anyone out there wonders about the durability of this product, this may be a clue. I do believe a simple main board swap would have fixed it, but the replacement deal for $109.99 with new power supply and remote was more than fair. I did not need the glass and hoses as I have the original stuff plus D Dave kit. I had to lower the temperature because I combusted the first load. This tells my the new one is working much more efficiently than the old one. I hope I get another 7 years out of this one. I love Arizer.

How fun to get a new Arizer EQ! I just hit the one year mark on mine. It would be wonderful to get 6 more years.

Mine works like new?

“Q” is all U need really!

VAS is a disease!
I know, I know. VAS really is a thing. I have a toaster. It makes decent toast. I like my toaster, but it doesn't inspire me to buy another toaster, or more toasters, or a portable travel toaster for the car. Vapes are different.
But then, I have 6 Crock Pots. Go figure.

I have too many water pipes?
Two many vaporizer’s?
2-many Blow DRYERS?
1-toaster!

Gambling, SMOKING, COLLECTING?

Use a “Q” if you need 2-B CIVILIZED?

I knew I had seen this topic before.... here.
Interesting - did your EQ survive 8 months? Mine seems fine after 3 years...

On the vertical/horizontal heat management issue: I'm awaiting a right angle adapter from DHgate. Meanwhile hitting it sideways using the whip - but I'm holding it sideways so I can feel the temperature of the case. My impression FWIW is that it feels like it gets about as hot sideways by the end of a session as it does vertically. That seems odd - I would have expected extra heat to have radiated to the case when horizontal.

Anyone got access to a thermal scan camera willing to get some measurements of the case temperature after a 10 minute session held vertically and horizontally?

Good Morning FC,

I made my Cannaoil on Thursday. I think it turned out pretty well.

I learned (the hard way) why people use double-boiling or a crock pot to do this. I used a pot of oil, on the stove top, with a candy thermometer. It's REALLY hard to maintain a consistent temp that way. I basically stirred constantly for the 2 hours I did it. Fiddling with the stove temp the whole time.

I managed, for the most part to keep the temp between 95C and 105C. I never let it exceed 105C.

I did notice while I was doing it, that there was around a 20C difference on the candy thermometer between when the oil was being stirred vs when it wasn't. If the thermometer read 95C and I stopped stirring, with no change to the stove dial, it dropped to around 75C. Then when I stirred it back up, it popped back to to 95C. So I feel like, if you're not stirring your oil, you're not getting an accurate temp reading.

I ended up with about 7 oz of infused oil. From ~22g of pre-washed ABV. It's pretty dark, but I think that's that's normal. It pretty much just tastes like olive oil, so I think the washing was effective.

I probably could have used more oil, but I didn't measure that part initially. I put the ABV in the pot, and added oil until it was covered by maybe 1 cm of oil on top of it. After straining it in the end, that worked out to about 7 oz.

So...what do you folks use your Cannaoil for?

On the vertical/horizontal heat management issue: I'm awaiting a right angle adapter from DHgate.

Photos: https://imgur.com/a/rIvF7rt

Update a few bowls/hours later: Warning - easy to see how you could break the EQ if you're not careful because the weight of the old whip glass adapter is relatively heavy at about 42g - the one I'm using allows the bowl to be unscrewed from the 18mm female adapter base of the whip for cleaning. Weight on the end of the right angled adapter will potentially stress the thin glass around the EQ heater below the 18mm male adapter, making it easier for a clumsy stoner to break than with an all vertical load. For the record, the DHGate right angled adapter weighs in at 24.3g.

PSA: This right angled glass 18mm female to 18mm male https://www.dhgate.com/product/glas...d=409160457974435846#s1-1-1b;searl|2767513967 arrived today - fits the EQ perfectly with plenty of height on the female half so the male adapter sits well clear of the top of the EQ plastic shell.

Recommended provided you are willing to manage the risk of breaking the EQ glass. No need to tilt the EQ while taking hits from an old fashioned 18mm female digital hotbox vape whip. Total cost was about US$10 including postage and only took about 8 days to arrive in Sydney from the DHGate vendor - seems well made, reasonably solid and neatly finished.

What do you think, @DDave ? I can recommend this combo, especially when you want to vaporise a relatively large load of weed - given the risks of leverage if the whip is stressed.

@fubar
I'm not seeing the herb chamber in this setup. Where would you put screens/herb?

In the early mod days, I experimented with angled pieces on top of the adapters. Always proved to be a condensation point for the vaporized goodies, so I went with a straight air path instead.

Working on a solution to the whip tubing issues on the EQ. Stay tuned.

@fubar
I'm not seeing the herb chamber in this setup. Where would you put screens/herb?

The screen is held between the two pieces of black plastic on the whip adapter - they screw together locking down the screen - one end attaches to the female 18mm adapter and the other end to the glass sphere and whip. It's really easy to clean when it's unscrewed compared to the earlier versions I have of that design that are just glass with a screen but those ones have a larger area of screen exposed and so require even more weed to be packed in so the air path doesn't find any easy way to avoid the puck.

One additional observation from testing the right angled adapter: The longer air path requires the EQ to be cranked up to a higher temperature to maintain decent extraction compared to the 18mm DDave mod I usually use - the more I use the right angle, the less I like it. It's better when the whip adapter goes directly on the EQ but then there's the choice between the problem of gravity when it's upside down and the risk of heat damage when the EQ is held sideways.....
Choices, choices...

Interesting idea, but I get such great hits from my Arizer Extreme Q and my @DDave kit, that I wouldn't want to risk my EQ using it at an angle. Still, It's been interesting reading the thread and attempts people have made to modify the EQ, and I applauded the adventurous spirit. Mine needs to last me awhile, so I err on the side of caution. As I said, mine's a beast with the @DDave mods, so it's not a hardship.

Amen to that - the one issue we have no data on at this point is whether holding it sideways has any effect on the device life expectancy. It may be a risk but we have no evidence in terms of thermal imaging or reported failures that I'm aware of. I'm willing to take the risk for all of you wonderful people so will report any issues if they come up. So far so good.

Kind of you to do so. I'm broke enough that I'd rather buy a vape than replace a vape, and am not in the position to do either. Many fine folk have experimented with, and on, the Arizer Extreme Q, and chronicled the result in this very thread. Now you will join them, and you couldn't be in finer company. Any cautions thus far, I'm sure have been out of concern for you and your Arizer EQ. We're just friendly that way, but we do know a determined and intrepid adult who has the will and they way to use their vape as they please. In the interest of science, no less. I love science, and hearing about the efforts of others far less timid than I. This thread is dear to me, and your efforts are part of what makes it great. Blessings on your endeavour.

There are tons of options to whips and bags and bowl pieces but I was wondering if everyone has come to an agreement on the best place to re up on Q accesories. I love the DDave mod. Is there an all in one pack or something? Or shud I just go buy everything from ebay for the best price I can find? Thanks!

You mean a @DDave kit? There are various DDave Kits, and they are going to be the best price for the quality, versatility and utility. You can ask DDave any questions you like about what best suits you, and I would encourage you to do so. DDave is passionate about everyone getting the best performance they can from their EQ, and he is meticulous about the quality and specification of his parts. DDave.com is the place to be. I honestly don't think you can do better.
