The G43 Vaporizer

What's up everybody!

This is the vaporizer I built that you may have seen me using in my livestreams, previously called Project A, now known as the G43.

What does the name stand for?

Glass slide
4mm glass rod
3mm glass balls

What's different and special about this one? It's simple, it's strong, and it's cost effective.

It was designed around dry herb use, but you can vape concentrates with it as well with the addition of a small health stone inside the chamber.

These are the things I thought about while building it:

  • Use as few parts as possible
  • Use very simple materials
  • Make it easy to use for beginners
  • Vapor must be very strong/potent
  • It must produce lots of vapor/big clouds
  • The flavor must be pure and unadulterated
  • Keep price to an absolute minimum
  • Sacrifice bells & whistles for more meat & potatoes

I would say this can technically be categorized as a desktop vaporizer, but it can also be fairly portable if you'd like to use it as a cordless vape around your home.

How does it work?

The G43 is like some other desktop vaporizers in that you need to pair it up with a glass rig or j-hook to actually use it, there is no mouthpiece or stem included.

The end of the slide is a standard 18mm male connection so you need to pair it up with an 18mm female rig. If you only have a 14mm female rig I will have adapters available as an add-on for a max of $5.

IMG-20181024-171153-3.jpg

If you don't currently have any glass rigs you will be able to add on an 18mm glass J-hook to your order at a max of $10, it works great with it and it's super simple.

Otherwise, if you want a nice quality cheap glass rig, my go-to is the Stereo Matrix rig that NewVape sells for $60 (shown in my video clips), and you can also find very similar rigs on dhgate that are under $100.

Vaping with the G43 is a very simple process:

1) Fill chamber loosely with dry herb (80% full)
2) Turn on box mod and power on cruise control (11 watts starting)
3) Insert glass slide into your 18mm female rig or adapter
4) Wait 3-4 minutes for the glass inside to heat up to full operating temp
5) Start rippin' it!

How is it powered?

You have two choices for the power supply, and both options will be included in the base kit. One is a simple battery holder for a single 18650 cell, and the other is a 510 connector so you can easily power it with a box mod.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The first batch of at least 100 units is going to be shipping with the 510 connector attachment ONLY, and the other battery holder attachment will be shipped to you once I've finalized the protection circuits on it to make it safe.

The mod I'm using it with now is a Wismec P80 which is a single-18650 mod, but they also sell popular dual-battery models if you want to extend how long you can vape with it. I bought 100 P80 mods that I have in stock for the first 100 people who don't have one and need to add it on (max $35 addt'l).

Other vapes I like a lot that inspired this creation and influenced my design are the Glass Symphony, Elev8r, and Tubo Evic.

Below is a 5-min video clip of a complete session from start to finish:

How much is it and where can I buy one?

$99 @ Bud's Vape Shop (Current ETA Jan/19)

I anticipate being able to offer these to you very soon, and I will be posting all updates on availability in this thread. I'll also be posting a full G43 video shortly, which I will post here once complete, as well as the complete written transcription on VC: https://www.vapecritic.com/g43/

A small group of trusted beta testers has already received their units and have started providing feedback. The beta period won't be too long, I'm doing this to figure out what last minute tweaks (if necessary) I should make to any of the parts before producing any more.

This project was mainly to see if I could create a heater that actually worked, and then when I did get it working I knew it was something you guys had to try for yourselves.

So this basic heater-only model that you need to use with a rig is my first base model that I purposely wanted to be as simple as possible. Then once you guys have had a chance to use it and provide feedback for me I can start integrating those ideas into the next upgraded version.

Once the G43 heater is perfected to our liking, I want to move my main focus to shrinking things down to get it all inside a portable unit the size of a medium box mod. I have an alpha version of this built that works and produces vapor, but it needs a ton of additional work to be a real vaporizer that can be sold, so it's on the back burner at the moment.

On a final note, this will be my first foray into manufacturing, and I know it puts me a weird position when I'm still a reviewer too. I just want you guys to know that I'll be doing my absolute best to remain neutral and unbiased when I talk about my vape as well as other company's vapes, your support is the only thing keeping me going.

I'm not currently taking any pre-orders but I do have a standby list of people who are interested and want to be notified when a unit is available for them to purchase. If you'd like to be added to this waiting list please post in this thread and let me know or send me a PM.

Please feel free to post any questions or comments you may have and I will respond to them as quickly as possible. My wife @VCHazel will also be replying and helping to the extent that she can :p

Stay up!
-Bud

P.S. I'm currently looking for a new US glass manufacturer and don't have any hot leads right now, if you happen to know someone who would be interested in producing my custom glass slides for me please reach out!

Thanks guys!

The coil is first tightened around a 4mm glass rod, then once inside the slide the 3mm glass balls are filled in to surround the coil

Of course!
The clue is in the name

You're probably not soliciting ideas ATM, but just in case you're open to something :
If the rod were a tube instead, you could run the return leg of the coil inside to help further reduce the risk of shorts between it and the coil.
You might not consider this necessary, or advantageous

Does the G43 work with temp control?

I notice you seemed to be handling it without fear of being burned, does the centre part with the beads also remain cool enough to handle?

Gotta say, the price is nice.
If I weren't so skint that even skins are beyond my means right now, I'd be jumping aboard for sure

Looks nice and clean ,i've stumble upon it couple of times while it was in the making.
I have attempted in making DIY resistors from quartz rod and ss wire in the past and while It worked i had an issue with too much heat reflected to the connectors/cables.. How is the heater connected to the cables in your concept ? Is it soldered or you use some kind of connectors ?

This does remind me of a smaller glass symphony minus the all glass airpath. Actually like the tubo and glass symphony had a baby. I didn't end up liking using the elev8r as a portable glass symphony, this might end up working for me.
To me is more like TUBO and FLAM had a baby ,but since GS is the pioneer of incorporating boro balls in a heater it can be considered as the grandparent ,lol.

I like the price. Always cool to see something you like and think "that's gonna be way too fucking expensive" and then it isn't.
Yes Bud is already as fair and good value as can possibly be. I dont see him making much profit at all, just because he wants everybody to get the best vape, best package for the best price too. Have to respect that.

I think it looks great, love the concept, would love to try one. How many sessions can one expect with a fully charged 3000 mAh 18650? Also can it crush a bowl in one hit like the Flowerpot or is that expecting too much?

From watching the video it looks like an extra 6 inches or so of wire on the pigtail would be nice.

Thank you guys for all of your interest, comments and questions!

I'm always open to all feedback thanks man! That's a good idea and I believe that's what is going in the Tubo heater

Does the G43 work with temp control?

It should, the coil is 316L stainless steel, but I haven't experimented with this as of yet. Up until right now I've been testing and calibrating units in wattage mode.

I notice you seemed to be handling it without fear of being burned, does the centre part with the beads also remain cool enough to handle?

The only part that gets too hot to handle during use is the 1" section in the middle with the beads. Even after it's been on for a while the top part of the slide, the handle, and the bottom part where the bowl is should all be cool or slightly warm to the touch. Since it doesn't overheat those areas it's easy to unload and load a new chamber while it's still running.

So my mod can't haven't custom firmware and does not have cruise control, so it looks like I would need a new one to use.

I bought 100 Wismec P80 mods that I have in stock to offer as an add-on for the first 100 people who need one.

How is the heater connected to the cables in your concept ? Is it soldered or you use some kind of connectors ?

I use crimp connectors to attach the coil to the wires and then I put heat shrink around them, check out this pic of the main parts used:

Be good to see it working with concentrates as i cant work out how it operates with oil and stones?

I've used it a few times on live streams with oil but I'll make sure to include that in the main video I post about it soon. All you need is a healthstone like the Elev8r uses, the ~10.5mm ones just fit inside the chamber.

Then, when using with the mod you just bump up the wattage a tiny bit to get it hot enough to vape all the oil off the stone. You can also do double deckers by loading a little herb behind the stone when you insert it into the chamber

How much herb does it hold?

The ideal load size is between 0.1g and 0.25g, with it really being designed around ~0.2g used at a time.

"Glass hold heat"

How many sessions can one expect with a fully charged 3000 mAh 18650? Also can it crush a bowl in one hit like the Flowerpot or is that expecting too much?

I've been averaging just about ~25 mins of the heater being powered on before the battery voltage drops below 3.7v, which is the minimum required to get the heater to max temp.

Ripping through a bowl in one hit might be pushing it, but then again I haven't tested this extensively, stay tuned for more info on this

From watching the video it looks like an extra 6 inches or so of wire on the pigtail would be nice.

Thanks for your feedback! The ideal length of the cords is one of the things I'm hoping everybody can help with and it's one of the things I'm asking the beta testers to provide feedback on as well.

I really like the concept of this vape, I like powerful convection and I kn ow you need some heat exchanger to really make that happen.
Most vape manufactures, even the big ones forget about this and think that as long as you put a heat source in and connect it to a bowl and mouthpiece, it will work.
Well, it will, but not to the level of vapes that do care about heat exchangers, like Glass symphony, EVO, supreme etc.

This is the first one that actually comes in a small size and powered by electricity, and is almost all-glass, with a 18mm connection. That's exactly the kind of vape I love and want to see more of on the market.
I've already have had some technical questions answered, but I could think up few more:

The constructions looks like it could be fragile - I think pulling on the wire (accidentally) in the direction of the purple arrow could easily fuck up the coil. Can it? Is there anthing to prevent that?
I can think of one way to prevent that and that would be to thread that wire back and forth through that glass disc with 7 holes, so each wire goes through 3 of those holes.
Then an acciedntal pull would just pull on the disc (and that thing can't move up) and the force wouldn't continue further to the coil.
But I think a solution like that woul also require more holes, so the airflow is still good.

You have said that the top part doesn't get hot (the green arrow), but the wire insulation is going very deep, touching the glass "screen" that separetes the heater and the intake (the yellow arrow).
It is a complex glass shape that the heat might have some trouble to travel straight through (the red arrow), but it's still a very little distance from the heater.
Are you sure it can't get hot at that point even after maximum power for like 30 minutes?
I think putting another of those glass discs with 7 holes where the blue arrow is could extend the heat insulation of that wire significantly.

And I also think there definitely should be a way to power it from the wall, it would be a great desktop unit.
