I'm visiting Ocean Shores, WA for a sand castle & chainsaw art competition (Sand & Sawdust Fest), and my timeshare sits on a long peninsula fronting the Pacific Ocean. This morning, a couple visitors had a morning munch in front of my unit.

This image was captured just before sunset from Xilingol, Inner Mongolia, China. The picture of an orange colored sky is real -- a digital composite of two exposures of the solar eclipse that occurred earlier this month. The first exposure was taken with a regular telescope that captured an overexposed Sun and an underexposed Moon, while the second image was taken with a solar telescope that captured details of the chromosphere of the background Sun. The Sun's canvas-like texture was brought up by imaging in a very specific shade of red emitted by hydrogen. Several prominences can be seen around the Sun's edge.

Just almost stepped on it on the front stoop. Any stoner entomologists out there know the type of beetle?:





It seems to only be happy on its back slowly writhing around in what appears to be crippling, mind-bending agony... poor lil thing...

He is a Stag beetle. Probably spent several years in your compost pile or in a rotting log before he pupated and came out to fight for a mate. He is a male and those big mandible are used to flip other males off branches.
They don't survive til winter, so he has probably been shagging himself to death. Hope he won a few fights and got to spread his seed.

Awesome, thanks so much! I thought it might be a stag, but I also thought they were more black than brown, but I guess they prolly vary in color anyway depending on environment etc...? I just tossed him out on to a "high bush" blueberry bush out back to shag the rainy night away...!

Yeah we get them in Aus too, probably hundreds of species on every continent except Antarctica. Pushy pugnacious little things.
We also get those big Rhinoceros beetles that hiss when you mess with them. Bulldozers of the beetle world. Gotta admire their no shit attitude.+=

Either way, I just wanted to let you know that I think I saw a female stag earlier in the afternoon as it looked much the same but the mandibles were quite a bit smaller...? and the abdomen was all puffy so I thew her up to a tree branch and she took flight...! Suppose I could just wiki it, but where's the fun in that...?

Cleaning out my vape lounge (aka the shed) today and found a big shed huntsman spider skin, then tonight after I saw your post, she came out to play. I would also never kill such a beauty who eats all the cockroaches she can find.

and pallet/tarp "garage" creations apparently... dude (technically pronounced similar to "Jill", as in "Gilberto", but everyone calls him "Gill", and his wife/high school sweetheart, Luciana... both Brazilian/American citizens and have lived here in the US for 35 years and raised 2 American adult daughters) spent like 2 hours in the sweltering hot humid sun "rebuilding" it yesterday afternoon so it will be better protected while they go away to their new condo in Brazil for 3 weeks... no, the mf-er didn't leave me the keys to all 3, only to the Hyundai beater and pick-up...
