Herb Grinders

Hey shred heads,

Been living with the Santa Cruz Shredder mini 4 piece for a few days now and already I'm using less herb.

My vapes all seem to love the shred.

Although I'm still experimenting with my vapman. (thinking bout a MFB finishing grinder)

I can see how the mini could stick and jam up if you shred more than me. Or for those with difficulty holding small objects.
No different to any other aluminium grinder of the same size I believe.

Couple of things, the 3rd piece with the screen seems a different shade of gun metal and I'm sure the colours should be consistent.

Also, how do I get the keif out? Should I have recieved a scraper?

Use a paint brush you would get at the art store or dollar store. This gets all the kief out and works excellent on the screen. I've used the scrapers before and they do not compare to the brush.

SCS doesn't send a scraper with their 4 pc so you will have to improvise one.

My SCS actually came with two Santa Cruz Shredder scrapers and one Other Side Vapes scraper. My impression was that every SCS is supposed to come with one SCS scraper. I figured (since there seems to be no standard packaging with these grinders) that it's kind of up to the reseller to either include a scraper or not include one.

I have a small 4-piece SCS arriving either tomorrow (Saturday) or Monday, as well as a mini 2-piece, both from a different vendor than I bought my large SCS from. It will be interesting to see if either of these grinders comes with a scraper. (I see no reason for the 2-piece to come with a scraper.)

I got several make-up brushes in a pack at the dollar store. Much better deal than the paint brushes at a craft/art store, and I agree that a brush is much more useful than a scraper. You can use it to 'quick clean' the whole grinder after each use.

Very different. I own a couple of other models the same size, and a couple of nano sized models (30mm) which are a half inch smaller than the Mini. They deal with a full load much better than the SCS because they have the standard diamond shaped teeth, enabling them to cut through the bud with the leading edge. The squared off SCS teeth are the problem. With the larger sizes you can get enough torque to turn the grinder, despite the blocky tooth shape.

I may have to throw out my puff grinder unless I figure out a way to fix it. I love this grinder so much and can't part with it. I noticed the magnet in the grinder to hold the lid is gone. It still works fine cause the lid has magnet as well. But when I grind herb up I can see black powder where the magnet use to be. I would scrape and clean and re do it and it comes back. Don't know what that stuff is and don't really wanna be smoking it to be honest.

Anyone every had this issue or know what it is? This happened after a thorough ISO bath.

Everything 30 percent off right now on SCS website!

Tempted to pick up a new one. So hard to decide on colors tho.
Matte black or matte gun metal me thinks. I love the new small size with the skull but no matte option as of yet. Was gonna grab the limited Warriors one cuz I a big Bay Area sports fan but they already sold out

My small limited copper scs came with like three kief picks.

I just figured out that the Platinum Grinder is identical to the Bo-Bo Head grinder, but with a different painted-on graphic/label, as well as double the cost ($20 vs $10 on Amazon). So if anyone ever considers buying the Platinum Grinder (which is a big seller on Amazon), you'll probably also want to check out the Bo-Bo Head grinder.

Not a bad grinder, by the way. Particularly for the price. It would be a very good grinder for someone who has never had/used a grinder, or as a backup/alternative grinder, or for someone who recently lost a grinder or had theirs stolen and needs a reliable cheap grinder until they can save up for another good one. (The only reason I bought the Bo-Bo Head is because my nickname has always been Bo, and because the grinder cost $10. Also, a lot of people called me Bobo when I was little, and few decades later a lot of people still call me Bo.)

Looks like my two SCS grinders (small blue 4-piece and mini purple 2-piece) will not arrive today. I can't wait to try the small grinder. (I mostly only ordered the mini because it was only $15.)

Thanks for the code @whatitdew.

Was about to pull the trigger on a Titanium Space Case on Massdrop but went for a small/medium 4 piece SCS in matte gunmetal instead. Was still about $10 more than the Massdrop Space Case but I'm really looking forward to trying an SCS. Seems to be the preferred vape grinder around these parts.

I have an SCS grinder but I'd like to get a finer grind than the one I get with it. I don't think I need a 4 part one. Any suggestions?

The plastic 2-piece pyramid tooth grinder from Storz and Bickle is a great. You can get a coarse grind with a half turn or so, an almost powdery one if you keep going, and anything in between. Pyramid teeth are awesome.

For anyone who has a 4-piece grinder, and also a 2 piece, you can use the 4-piece's herb chamber to store your ground herbs for the day, or during your session, and use the 2-piece to do the actual grinding. This collects a tiny bit of kief every time you move the herb around inside the grinder while loading bowls, but gives you the finer grind of a 2-piece. It does add up after a while, if you have strains that produce a lot of it, and since you aren't intentionally scraping anything against the screen, you shouldn't notice any difference in the potency of your avg. bowl.

I think I figured out a good trick to keep my large 4-piece SCS turning smoothly, without also having to clean the whole grinder somewhat regularly: Just dip a cotton swab in alcohol and remove the top grinder piece. Rub the alcohol around the very top of the circumference of the piece with the bottom teeth, as well as the very bottom circumference of the top piece, along the small plastic ring. (I'm not sure what to call that part. O-ring?)

Another way to do it: Dip the cotton swab in alcohol. Prop open the top piece of the grinder just a bit. Stick the wet end of the cotton swab between the two top pieces, only at the very edge. Let go of the top piece so it'll close most of the way. Move the cotton swab all the way around the piece at least once. This way is a little easier, and you will be able to clean both surfaces at the same time.

After I do this, the grinder is as smooth as butter for a short time. I would be inclined to think everyone else has already figured out this trick, but I've never seen anyone mention doing this, so I'm not sure. Maybe having to deal with a slightly sticky grinder is just more of an issue to me than it is for most people, considering most people have hands that work much better than mine.

My small 4-piece and mini 2-piece SCS grinders just arrived. Can't say much about either one yet, but so far I feel like the mini would be much more doable for me if it was a 4-piece. Being a 2-piece, it's kind of hard for me to use. But I knew that before I ordered it. (I only ordered it because it cost $15.)

The small grinder mostly looks great, but there is one small bothersome scratch on the top, and there is a small amount of friction (metal on metal) when I turn it. It's not bad, but it might not be acceptable.

Now that I've looked a little closer, the mini has at least one pretty big scratch, too. Considering how much precision is required to make these things function correctly, I would think it should be pretty easy for the manufacturer to keep scratches and blemishes at a minimum.

I wouldn't get to caught up on the cosmetic imperfections. It's all about how it grinds. Eventually it'll get worn down and have battle wounds anyways.

I try not to, but I also have a lot of obsessive-compulsive in me, so I just can't help it.

I already figured out what's making the metal-on-metal friction. You know the little lines that mostly take the form of concentric circles on many grinders? Well, on the outer surface of the lid (the part that goes down into the piece below it), the lines are vertical instead of horizontal. Basically that part of the lid is very similar to the outside of an American dime. The other two SCS grinders I have are not like that.

EDIT: The weird thing is that this part has a different textural pattern on all three of my SCS grinders. On the large, the grooves are horizontal. On the small, the grooves are vertical. On the mini, there are no grooves. The large grinder, with horizontal grooves, feels the smoothest, by far.

EDIT #2: The small one I just received is blue. Blue is the SCS color I liked the most until I saw their gunmetal color (which is the color of my large SCS). Now that I have a blue one, I'm not so sure I care much for their blue color. (I love how it looks in pictures, though.)

There have been several reports of metal on metal friction with the SCS grinders. Look through this thread over the past year and you'll count at least 5-10 different reports of this issue. Doesn't seem like a widespread issue, but the multiple reports of a similar issue leads me to believe there was some sort of problem with either a batch or a shipment of SCS grinders (small 4-piece size seems like the most commonly reported with issues). Although with the wide number of online vendors and the vast array of old inventory available on the market, it's tough to say if this is an ongoing issue, or an old issue which rear's it's ugly head from time to time

An SCS grinder should be perfectly machined. An exterior scratch is one thing (possibly caused by shipping/handling who knows). But if you feel your SCS "catch" anywhere in the full spin and you see wear marks in the metal where it "catches", I personally would refuse to accept it and request a replacement.

My advice for anyone spending $50+ on a grinder is to check the vendor' return/exchange policy before purchasing to ensure you can get a replacement if you have any problems. (I'd also only buy a $50+ grinder from an authorized vendor, to ensure you have a valid warranty should the vendor be a bitch about defective grinders)
