Discontinued Elevape SV

I bought a elevape from vapornation and received it after 4 days. I've been reading this forum and got excited so paid for the rush shipping. When I first opened the box I first noticed how nice the elevape looks. It feels very sturdy and we'll built. It is heavy but fits well in the palm of my hand. I wasn't impressed that there was no brush or tool or charging cord. But since I am a avid vaporist and have bought many vaporizers over the years i have a few brushes laying around. I plugged the elevape in and waited for the green light. After 5 agonizing hours I got the green light to go. So I packed the chamber set the vape on 1 and took a draw. To my amazement my lungs filled up to the point of coughing. I opened the chamber and saw some browning of my herbs. There were no signs of burning or any combustion. I flipped the switch to 2 and tried another draw. I immediately felt the heat of smoke and exhaled and sure enough, smoke. I inspected my herbs and there was definitely combustion. I tried a few more times on the different settings and get smoke more times then I like! So I got the old big ass desk top out and fired up the windows and downloaded the app. It is alot rougher then the ipuffusa website suggests. It didn't show me how many draws I took or even the temperature settings. You can choose from 1 to 14 or 15. I'm at work and can't recall at the moment. But I set 1 to 1, 2 to 4, and 3 to 7. Changing the settings and taking my vape apart to clean the sensor and heating coil after average use has stopped the combustion. After a few days and learning the elevape, it wasn't as easy as some suggest, or at least not for me, I now use this as my daily driver and keep a brush and the little Allen key on my all the time.

Thanks for posting smokey, I have an elevape back ordered at vapor nation. Hearing these last two user reports worries me a bit. I understand that these first models will have some kinks and some will require warranty work. Now that you have the heat settings do you like the vape? How is the taste and battery life? How often do you clean the sensor?

I would also like to know the negatives as well as the positives.

I got a firefly based on some very positive posts, only to find out, once I got one, how much trouble it is to keep clean. And that it's not as easy to control the puffing temperature as was suggested. And how annoying it was that when I puff on it, the ground herb flies up and gets stuck on the little window, leaving the center of the bowl empty.

Now, after spending $300, I'm already wanting to replace it. This thing is $300 again. I don't want to keep getting sucked in and feeling sorry.

The fact that the app is not the same as advertised is already a very bad sign. Frankly, if they are selling a product that doesn't live up to its marketing hype, buyer should have the right to return it for a full refund.

Two of these issues can be solved by using a top screen, temp control comes with practice.
It's still my favorite portable ever (sorry for ot)!

I agree, the app is the compelling feature of this vape for me.
Maybe it's still in beta like the vape itself ;)

Yeah, I did the top screen. But, the screens that come with the firefly are the wrong size.

Frankly, for $300, we shouldn't be beta testing their products for them. If it's not a complete, fully tested product, then either charge accordingly or replace and/or upgrade it. I'm going to be so pissed off when the inevitable v2 comes out, and people like me that took a chance when the product was relatively new and unknown, get stuck with the inferior original with no recourse except to shell out another $300 bucks for something that actually lives up to its marking hype.

I'm sorry the ff isn't working out for you. There were two previous versions.
The screens that come with it are for the bottom, using a top screen is a user modification.
There are many happy ff users including myself, maybe this will be better for you.

App trouble and combustion issues, I'm with you on hearing the negatives up front @Mrbinky , they're what will effect my decision. I considered this strongly, but I'm going to wait till more FC comrades have used the Elevape.

Sorry to go OT, but regarding your Firefly, I was a positive contributor on the FF thread and feel your frustration and am sorry you feel misled.
First off, consider finger grinding to small chunks in your FF as opposed to powder. Pull it apart rather than grind it. If your material is extra dry, search for Boveda paks on the FF thread.
All our vape experiences are unique but if you're not getting clouds, having to clean the unit often, your ground is not powdery, and your draw is moderate, I'd contact the manufacturer because unless I received a magic unit, your's is not operating as designed.
Good luck!
Again, apologies for any derailing.

I hope so, but it's impossible to try it out without actually buying one.

I guess I'm wanting something that is more of a polished product. Not an engineering sample or prototype. It sounds really great that you can adjust the temperature, puff at will without worrying about technique, etc. if it really works as promised.

I'd actually like to get one that I could gift to my wife and mother, and know they could use and enjoy it without hassles or worries. I seriously doubt my mom could happily use a firefly, for example. It would sit unused, a $300 waste of money. She'd probably be happier with my glass pipe, aside from the fact that her doctor would forbid it (as would I.)

Something that she could load in the morning, puff as needed, and easily clean. No danger of smoke. I'd love to buy her that product. The elevape sounded like it, but does the reality match the hype?

FYI, I do get clouds with the firefly, and it can produce good, smooth vapor. But it's inconsistent. Too dependent on technique. And when I share with my wife, she always scorches it.

By the way, is the vapor from the elevape smooth? Is it hot or cool? Does the mouthpiece get hot?

Is it easy to load? Neat and tidy?

Is it easy to clean, and remove all the little bits from the bowl/screen? Any little crevices where they get stuck, etc.?

Speaking of the mouthpiece, is it removable? What holds it in place? Is it loose?

Does anyone know if it will be possible to attach a water tool? That would be a big plus.

Does the herb need to be stirred, or is it enough to shake?

Does it need the same grind as a firefly? I've got a Santa Cruz shredder: will that work ok?

This is how I save from wasting valuable $ . I would advise you to
stay away from New Launches/Betas/Versions # 1 . Stick with the
Proven vapes that has been out for a while , version # 2 or 3 .
And ALWAYS wait to hear from FC members FIRST !

It's very easy to buy into the Hype , I'd almost jumped on the
Bholt and Ascent version 1 . I'm very glad that I waited .
This EV is also a new vape , and I'm following the thread .
I'm also following the Firefly, Indica , Grasshopper ,inh005
portable threads .

I would suggest getting the Solo for your wife and mother...
and yourself .

@Mrbinky I agree with poonman. Sounds like solo is the way to go...

Unfortunately there is nothing that will meet your criteria. At least not now or there's something I'm unaware of. But no matter how much beta testing and R&D gets done there will still be some kinks that didn't show up in pre production that do once it goes full scale. It's a lot easier to find and catch flaws when your only producing a handful of vapes...

As for cleaning, i think the FF is on the easier side. Yes it does get dirty quickly but Take a quick swipe with a alcohol wipe and it's back to new. The only vapes I've had that are easier to keep clean are desktop units and the solo which use glass.

I doubt this will be any better than the FF in those fields for you. It might be easier to use though.

The elevape sv is a nice little vaporizer. I use it daily, but like the pax which you were supposed to be able to pick up and use without much fuss but needed lots of attention, the elevape isn't as needy as the pax. It doesn't take much to zip out 2 screws to brush the sensor off which takes all of 2 minutes. But if you vape like I do, which is all day it needs to be cleaned daily. The screens gum up with resin and that contributes to combustion.
I find with every vape (besides the solo, which is my top pick) they need some learning to get them to work properly. I've had the MFLB (hate it), pax (cleaned and broke it), davinci (good vape but crappy batterylife) davinci ascent (won't charge after 2 months) inhalater 004 (loved this vape, but won't charge) t-vape (not a bad vape if you don't mind looking like your Sucking on a dildo, I don't use outside lol) and finally the elevape sv, which is taking some figuring out but I do like the heat on command, the mouthpiece is firmly in place and stay cool. The vapor produced isn't too hot and can produce some solo sized clouds. My girlfriend loves it for its simplicity.

Unfortunately, I think you may be right.

I don't mind supporting new companies and ideas. I had an Apple II with Integer Basic, and a Skinny Mac. In hindsight, these were brilliant but unpolished and nearly unusable by today's standards. And extremely expensive. But also revolutionary for their time and the model for everything that followed. I feel proud and privileged to have been in on the ground floor (indeed, I wrote some of the first commercial software for these products as a young turk.)

However, it bothers me that the makers of some of these new Vaporizers don't stand behind their products and take care of early adopters. I had a look at the PnP thread, and the manufacturer really doesn't seem to be treating their early adopters fairly at all. I mean, come on: this is essentially a medical device, and the plastic mouthpiece gets too hot and melts! Seriously? Imagine if your car did that (well, OK, I owned a Pinto....) And FireFlies with quality problems, manufacturing tolerance issues and obvious design flaws (a glass window over a bowl filled with fluffy material, that emits a glue-like resin, and no top screen--yeah, no way anything's going to accumulate there, right?)

I know this is a young industry, with young innovators out to change the world. They've got lots of great new ideas, and some silly mistakes. We give them our $300 knowing full well that there will be some bad with the good, but I think we deserve more in return than just "you're not using it right" or "give us $$$ more and/or shipping costs, and we'll see what we can do for you."

Yeah, if it cost $50 or so, I could live with that. I have a POS "vaporizer" pen that basically makes charcoal and ashes. But it cost $20 or so. I chalked it up to experience, and vowed to get something good, and I was willing to pay for quality, service and reliability. Good luck with that, right?

I was thinking about the Solo, but with all the different versions out there, I was scared to order one. I didn't want the older version as it was reportedly like sucking on a milkshake. If Amazon sold it, I know I would get what I paid for, and could return it if there was a problem.

Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't sell vaporizers...yet...

@Mrbinky ok man just go over to solo thread if your worried so we dont derail the elevape thread. in short the solo has been through the ropes and has been around for a few years. theres basically no chance you would get an old version. everyone out there selling is most likely like 100% selling the newest version that can charge while in use and is supposed to have better airflow. if your worried about airflow planetvape has stems to fix that problem. puffitup or planetvape will be the best customer service you will have, better than amazon i bet. amazon doesnt sell vapes anymore proly cause of some moral shit or something stupid, cause they used to sell them. the elevape intrigues me a lot maybe more if i had the disposable income. it seems like an enthusiasts type of vape, super technology, the solo just works, and works good its like the fatty joint of vapes

I think you may have missed your window. Amazon was selling vapes previously, but stopped selling most about a year ago. If you decide on the Solo, go with puff it up or PlanetVape.

I was very interested in this EV, but reports of combustion and daily cleaning maintenance may change my mind. This seems to incorporate the same technology that the grasshopper guys are trying to produce, instant heat on demand.

Salutations Mrbinky,

...an engineering sample or prototype... ...but does the reality match the hype?

Personally my choice of words would have been more like "Proof of Concept", so i'd say it sure may sound as an exciting prospect to gain access to such a deal even at this price, at least initially...

Though don't count me in considering the context i've explained previously.

Yeah, I agree.

Unfortunately, I already ordered one based on the initial 100% positive reviews. I'm like "wow, how cool. This will solve all my problems! "

And now I feel like a real chump, wishing I could cancel but probably it's too late.

So, if I can't cancel or return it easily, I guess I'll find out just how much of a polished product it really is. Wish me luck.

Don't get me wrong guys. This is a great vaporizer, but like a lot of you I thought it seemed like the perfect vaporizer so jumped at the chance to get one. I don't feel like i was duped i just wanted to post a a user review that shows its not the perfect convection vaporizer that won't combust. It did combust for me in the beginning but after I changed the temperature settings, started cleaning the sensor after a few bowls and found the grind and size of my herb, I am getting big clouds with no burnt spots.

Would you say clouds comparable to what the Solo produces? How is the taste compared to the Solo? I consider the Solo as a benchmark to compare new vapes with. Currently, I use an Inhalater004 on the go, but this seems like it could be a good upgrade. Oddly enough, the FlowerMate is also on my short list.

I guess a sensor that easily gets dirty would be this thing's Achilles heel. It uses light to sense the glow, and impute the temperature. Anything that obscures that is going to make it overshoot the set temperature.

An obvious point of failure. Like a sticky accelerator pedal. I'm surprised they missed it.

That would be why they call it a Beta unit no doubt. Have you ever run beta program on you computer ? Don't you expect some bugs before they put out the release version ?

I still don't understand purchasing a product in Beta if your not prepared for the possibility of having problems.

Yes, I've run beta test software. However, they usually don't charge $300 for it and, if they did charge, they'd update it for free.

Besides, the place where I bought it didn't mention that it was only a beta test and not a real production unit.

This is a medical device. If it malfunctions, it can hurt someone. It's being sold to people with health problems already. It should be better tested.

I do understand not being happy about finding out it's a beta until after you bought it, That's just wrong. You do know it's not really a medical device per say, we use it as such but there aren't any labs I know of that will test a vape and no way yet for it to be certified as "Medical Quality".

Seems lately that early adopters of many vaporizers are the beta test market.

Actually, the FDA is planning to regulate the vaporizer industry. I hope they won't, because then it will be impossible to buy one.

Hmm, maybe some companies are putting beta quality units on the market because they want to cash in before the FDA brings the hammer down and it's too late?

Anyway, I don't mind if it's a beta version as long as they upgrade me for a really low price.

I too use the solo as the benchmark. It has the taste, the ease of use, it's easy to clean, it's just bulky. The elevapes first cpl of draws are very tasty and comparable to the inhalater. with the clouds I exhale. Once it starts getting darker the taste isn't as good, but it gets the job done. The pros for me are the stealthilyness, how easy it is to take apart and give it a thorough cleaning. It doesn't take much herb to get good results. The heat on demand is pretty darn sweet. It has a rough app, but an app nonetheless, to customize the heat settings The cons: need to have brush and Allen key with me, I already lost the one they gave me, it combusted when I was under the impression it was not going to do that. I paid over 3 hundy for a beta unit.

I have a suggestion for this product.

Rather than just measuring the absolute brightness, they can measure a ratio of brightness between sensors sensitive to two different frequencies. As the coil heats up, the black body radiation distribution will shift towards higher frequencies. This will allow it to more reliably measure temperature even if the sensor gets partially obscured.
