Custom Glass Ideas/Designs Thread

Honestly that looks about right for $250. I think you may have been asking a bit much for $250-300 colorwise. That being said I would be reluctant to buy it considering the base situation which would have been easy to do right and the general lack of communication.

My issue isn't whether this is a piece that is worth the $250, but that it isn't what I was looking for. I think that may have been more clear with better communication. If I should try this again I will be quite explicit and will make it known that there will be no proceeding under any certain terms without a question being answered adequately.

When quoted the price I was a bit relieved, as what I thought I was asking for would have been a bit more, but left that to their expertise.

I just expected that when doing a custom order they might have been a bit more diligent in making sure that what they were putting the effort into making would be what the customer actually wanted. I would have expected a few questions such as:
What style mouthpiece would you prefer? (Some example pics of what they explain are the appropriate types for the design.)
Which perc? (More example pics)
Ornaments? (More example pics)
Then to be fairly specific with color and art designs, upon which a redone sketch by the glass artist. The sketch doesn't have to be Rembrant, just something that gives a vague impression that the artist has of what they will be making. That way you can say "YES!!!" or "Um... Why isn't the base part of it?" and "I wanted the swirling rainbowy thing to be darker & metallic with purple, blue, gray and maybe some blood red. That looks too bright." or "That should be a part of the water path, not tacked on like a useless medallion." or "What perc options would be best here and how will they affect function?"

Not: "Here!"

Please note that I am not naming them and wish them no ill will. They do good work. I have a piece by them that I love. (It's actually my favorite!) I just wish the communication on this custom had been better. If they happen to read this I hope they're not offended and that this constructive criticism (I hate the term, but it's appropriate) can help their business avoid any similar problems and thrive. I feel horrible about this. I would even consider doing business with them in the future, but completely understand that they would not be interested in my business. Damn... I feel like I just had a messy breakup.

Like I said, if someone is interested they can PM me and I'll contact them that I have someone interested and hook you up.

I think you are totally in the right. If you contact someone about a custom and they agree then they should communicate with you to make sure it is what you wanted. Unless they are told they have creative freedom over it then it's not wrong to expect what they agreed to. I would not be happy with how it turned out either. Hope you didn't lose too much in the deposit.

Thanks for sharing @gaseous_clay!

I'm going to try addressing some of your concerns using the four agreements.

The first agreement is to "be impeccable with your word"
It can be very difficult to describe exactly what you want when commissioning an artwork, since it doesn't exist yet. You asked for some things you did not receive, that's a bummer. If you are a discerning glass buyer it helps to know some of the trade. For example, it's best to ask for colors by name. There are "europa star" and "purple sable" from TAG that may be similar to what you wanted. If the shop doesn't have the color, they may have something close, or be able to order some.

The second agreement is "don't take anything personally"
You are dealing with a professional who runs a business. This is a monetary transaction with certain rules- there's a deposit, which can be high or low, refundable or non-refundable. You haven't broken any rules, so there's no need to worry or feel bad. If the business owner is unhappy with the situation, they can always change their deposit policy going forward.

The third agreement is "don't make assumptions"
It sounds like you advocated for your interests as well as you were able, but that still didn't yield a positive outcome. Don't be surprised to find out someone isn't on the same page as you.

The last is "Always do your best"
You've done your best, so there's no reason for regrets or beating yourself up. Move on and do your best with what comes next.

@gaseous_clay That's good that you were anticipating it costing more. I was just saying if you planning on commissioning a similar piece from another blower a price that low would set off alarm bells for me. For a lot of blowers a recycler isn't going to get much headier than basically a pendant welded on for $250-300. Doesn't make what they did right at all. I could see how a blower might justify taking control if the person commissioning the piece is only specific on a few things, but considering they didn't even get the base right (let alone the colors) that doesn't really fly here.

@shark sandwich :clap:the four agreements:clap:

Been pondering a custom piece, figured here would be a good place to post.
Would like a design that is multi functional (preferably with 2 18mm female joints)
Changes to the design
  • J-hook instead of a sherlock-pipe.
  • Simpler to make base.
  • Bulbous :shrug:. more expansion, less concerned with diffusion.
Do you glass aficionados have any suggestions for a design? Was thinking about getting with Joda, unless any of you have another recommendation?

either that or the money goes to a Haze v3

This is got the idea rolling

Edit, just to clarify. 1 hole would be plugged while the other is in use.:brow::rofl:

Things have seemed to be at a standstill lately. I asked for a progress update, and just heard back. Steven says the factory is currently working to fill a bulk order of 5000 pieces, and that he'll let me know when it's finished. That may explain the recent delays.

Back to back post, but it's been a while and there's news!

CCG said they're producing all three Can designs, and they should be available as soon as next week.

They also said that they're very interested in building more of our original designs in the future. @EverythingsHazy 's Dewaar Pillar came to mind immediately, but I know a number of designs have been shelved due to a lack of an able manufacturer.

If you have a design, there's finally a good place to send it!

Awesome. Looking forward to seeing our members working on some new designs again. It's very fun watching them go from thoughts, to mock-ups, to prototypes, to finished products.

Is it possible to blow a d20 style bubbler with a second layer egg style around it with a plug on it so I can fill with ISO and freeze and not have to deal with glycerin could add coloring to iso or ethanol to change it up. This way the everclear (thats what I use) doesnt end up in any air path but can reach -175 degress before freezing and breaking the glass. Has this been done?

Thanks for the name suggestion!

I'm not sure what you mean when you ask if the nail/dropdown will be removable.

The base piece will be 8 inches across and 5 inches tall at it's highest points which are the inlet and mouthpiece joints. It won't be the smallest piece for travel, but should pack well when disassembled.

At this point only three pieces are planned to be included: the base, the neck tube, and the mouthpiece/whip end. While a drop down will not be included, the inlet joint will be high enough to accommodate a drop down if you'd like to use one.

This piece was designed to be as modular and versatile as possible. The mouthpiece can be positioned in multiple ways or used as a whip, and hydratubes can also be used. The inlet joint will be tall enough to use a drop down, and deep enough to use with the Sublimator. The base should be wide and heavy enough to provide stability for any additional percolation or vaporization equipment you choose to attach.

Edit:

@jojo monkey

I wanted to respond to your post from the "cheap high quality bubbler" thread here so information stays where it belongs.

Thanks for the name suggestion! (It was "fc-dual18dp" for anyone who didn't see it.)

Steven will be starting the prototype for this when the Twist prototype is complete, which should be any day now. That doesn't mean that it will be available soon- the production process seems to take quite a bit of time.

I did not see yet if this piece made it into production. Did it ever evolve?

That design (originally called the DP-UFO) will be released soon, with a new name- the Cobra Can. All available drawings have been compiled in an album which you can view here:

The most recent production news is that CCG will be releasing all three Can designs in about a week, so we should get to see a real Cobra Can soon!

The design of the piece hasn't changed since it was last discussed, but I'll give a quick recap:

The Cobra can will be incredibly stable, due to it's wide and low design.

The inlet joint was designed with special consideration, to accommodate drop downs and sublimator use.

The male outlet joint allows for the use of hydratubes without an adapter.

The removable mouthpiece/neck tube is a two part design, which also allows for the native use of a whip, as both the mouthpiece and body have the same size male joint. Slide a length of tubing on in place of the neck tube (the middle piece with the bend), and you have a whip with a fancy mouthpiece.

An additional fuctionality of this design is that the neck tube can be used with the bend at either the top or bottom, which allows for two different profiles when not in whip mode.

Wow,
That pretty well checks all the boxes for me! Now I'm very excited to see how this develops!

@Mister G

Thank you!

I'm very excited for the Cobra Can myself. I just sent sent a message to CCG conveying the growing interest in these pieces, specifically the Cobra Can. I also requested photos- it will be interesting to see the real thing after only having drawings to refer to for so long.

@virtualpurple

I'm glad the Cobra Can looks like it will work for you. There should be more updates coming very soon!

Apologies for the back-to-back posts, but it's been too long to edit the last one.

CCG has provided video of their Rattle Can and Coil Can prototypes. This is the first time a Coil Can type perc has been made!

In the video you can see some air come out of the bottom of the perc, instead of the top. That can be addressed by making the bottom part of the perc (with the ball in it) longer. If that part extends farther down, then air will flow up and out, rather than down and out. I have already addressed this with CCG, so it should be fixed going forward.

I also explained that if the coil were one or one-half turn longer, it would come to a better height.

Man, that coil can is looking pretty sweet, though.

This is the idea I've had since I got this tube. It functions great, but it was too tall, especially adding a vaporizer onto the bottom. Pushing the 18mm female joint into the base and bending the neck gives an overall height of 9.5 inches instead of the original 14.5 inches. Also, leaving the 18mm joint slightly out avoids the problem of can style joints not fitting all vaporizers without adapters.
-The mouthpiece glass was a good thickness, but the joints and globe section were thin and that should be corrected.
-The recycler return joint needs to be below the perc, which is apparently not the case on all the originals, as pointed out by @Cannabis Connoisseur

Any other suggestions? I am not set on this idea and would change anything. My goal is to get something between the size of the PNWT and the original piece. If anyone wants to redraw this better, with any revisions, I would appreciate it.

I do not see the perc ball moving in that first video and it's missing from the second video..... If I'm not mistaken, the whole point of the ball is to act as a check valve of sorts....
