I used to see a ska band called Heavy Manners in the late 70's-early 80's. They have recently got back together and are playing the Beat Kitchen 11/26/2010. They were the best ska band in the land back then.
interesting sound, i dig it!

the singer has a little b-52s about her.

Need some musical advice please and didn't really want to start a whole thread...
I'm writing a piece at the moment on the history of urban drug use/abuse in American cities and how certain artists/pieces of music reflected (for better or worse) all the things associated with using drugs.

Obviously there is a wealth of choice for 80s/90s and 60s music referencing drug use, but I'm having some real trouble finding any 30s or earlier jazz or anything similar that I can directly link to narcotics. There was so much opium around at the time I know it must have had an effect on the music but trying to pin it down in a genre I have almost no personal knowledge of is very difficult.

So basically, all you golden oldies, I know you may not have been around either but perhaps you might be able to suggest some artists/songs particularly associated with being high from yester-year? There's so much literature and artwork that's blatant in its depiction of drug culture but finding the tunes is harder.

It's a really fascinating piece of research as you come to see how drugs literally touch upon every urban issue, and it's the same issues whether its 1810 or 2010. I want to do the earlier-era justice and not over-do the cliched 60s music, so please please good people, any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Charlie Parker often played under the influence, so did Miles Davis and Django Reinhardt. Reefer is also a common theme in American blues (Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Lightning Hopkins).

I haven't had a chance to go through all this, but I'll share a few samples from bands that I quite enjoy (especially when vaped) and go through the stuff you guys have posted. If you even remotely like this stuff you owe it to yourself to get better copies of them as Youtube sound quality is quite poor.

The Dead Weather
One of Jack White's three bands. A real rock band with a female lead singer (Allison Mosshart from The Kills). You don't see a female singer than can actually rock too often.

I Can't Hear You off Sea of Cowards

The Raconteurs
Jack White's second band and my favorite current rock band period.

Roustabout Bassnectar Remix: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jnI5oSkLXg

I love the Gorillaz a lot too.

I really like holy diver(dio) both for getting stoned and already being stoned
the intro is just beautifull, first slowly the sound of wind, getting harder, then the music softly mixing in, and then suddenly bam the music starts, but altough it's a bam it's still also not that sudden
the final solution and panzerkampf(both by sabaton) are great too

and recently I discovered that my own cross(cross between 2 danish outdoor sativa strains) and bob marley is a very good combo

Thanks very much, that started me off on a spree of 1930s drug-music.

The point of the essay was to show how people's drug use influences and is influenced by city development and other urban factors over time (1930s --> 1960s/70s --> 1990s/2000s)

The songs were:

Cab Calloway - The Man from Harlem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LXznzKaFSo

Clarence Williams - Jerry the Junker: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkLxJZuuru4

Ella Fitzgerald - When I Get Low I Get High: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjsPHDJPGto

The Who - The Seeker: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAbzlj3nf4E

The Velvet Underground - Heroin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xcwt9mSbYE

Curtis Mayfield - Pusherman: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uv7AbxqxXag

Immortal Technique - Dance with the Devil: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dRgYd5Mxs0

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under the Bridge: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AHvch2OqzE

Scarface - My Block: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rH5XdTYom5Q

We were limited to up to 10 songs unfortunately, as obviously this barely scratches the surface of the story of music and drugs and how they've influenced each other, as well as those who listen/take them
