    Hey FC!

What you think is the best way to vaporize our favorite herbs when away from power for a long time? Pros, cons of solutions?

For me so far, one way is to go with a torch-flame based vaporizer like the Lotus or Vapman or other similar one. Some of them are also very durable and can last for years with some good care. Downside is that you need a good stock of lighters, either a few expensive, well built ones or a small bag of cheaper, good-for-a-few-months ones. You also need to find good butane from time to time. The costs for this solution are fairly low but you still depend on a market.

Second solution in my mind is a vape like the Sublimator UFO. You can go with butane but you can go with wood fire as well. Expensive to buy but could last a lifetime. Downside is that you need to use a glass piece for this or go for a full Mercury kit. A pretty sustainable solution in my mind but you get to PAY for it! :p

Third solution a USB charging vape (lots to choose from I guess) and a good portable solar panel. I imagine that a Grasshopper paired with a Goal Zero Nomad 13 Solar panel and a Sherpa 50 recharger could be a very neat solution although a bit expensive as well. If you add the AC plug accessory you can even power a log vape from this thing. Even an e-nano maybe but a Hi or UD for sure!

Then it could be our old friend the shisha… I have tried it as a vaporizer in the past and it tastes amazing, it hits like a train and can destroy several people simultaneously if it needs to. Only think you need to have in abundance are coils and good natural ones are not cheap at all! And you need a lot of them apparently… I wonder if normal coals from a wood fire can be used… Probably not…

Then I can think of fresnel lenses and sun… Nothing specific though that works for sure… There is this guy but it doesn't look nice…

    Also this guy…

    Anyway, what you think?

The longest ive been away from power recently was 11 nights in the bush on a camping trip that went wrong. I brought my cera and a car charger, but immediatly gave up because i coudnt be fucked, and just smoked joints instead. If your going to be without power for a long time, and you dont have a case of bic lighters than you should just smoke joints or make a bong or whatever, vaping is a privlage of modern society, it is silly to try to transplant it into a situation where you have no technology.

EDIT: i did have a shisha, it was great, ran the coals in the camp fire and loaded it up with a gram or so ontop of a bed of nicotine free cane molassos, it was a great way to smoke weed. I do not consider it vapor, the weed burns.

EDIT2: we occasionally used coals from the campfire on the shisha, it worked fine however it had a distanct taste (not too bad) and felt very intense. i cant imagine its super great on your lungs but neither are many of the ways i have smoked weed in the past, nor are the cigerettes i smoke at the moment, i dont really give a fuck about combustion, i just choose to vape because its the best way to cosume cannabis

Interesting points… I will disagree though that vaping is a privilege of modern society and that shishas burn the weed. I have successfully vaporized weed with amazing results in a shisha and nothing was burned. The finished ABV was of perfect uniformity and a very dark chocolate brown. How intense it is I guess has to do with how much you load in there as shisha bowls tend to be on the large side… My experiences with a shisha were eye opening at least! I had a fairly deep bowl and that could have made the difference though. About half a gram at the bottom on top of a DIY screen made of a tea candle and an upside down empty tea candle (perforated as well) on top of the weed with the coal on top of it. Was hitting better than a Herborizer!

Can you bring a small inverter generator like an eu1000I/ef1000is with you? Not exactly camping, but I have a ef2000is I plan to bring to my next musical festival. I'm gonna use it to run my juicer in the morning, while my portable vape and anker portable battery pack charges. That should give me plenty of power to last until the next morning.

Understood. While that is certainly commendable, I must say those generators are extremely efficient.

Love my Solo while out camping deep in the mountains. The car charger works great on its own. I also have what's called a power box and I simply run a small solar panel into the power box and then the Solo into the box. Works extremely well and I get to solar power my Solo. Can't beat it IMO. Rocky Mountain high oh my.

The Iolite or wispr dont require an external power source, but you will need some butane

You will need to experiment with this suggestion to see what works best or even if it will work at all.

Find a hard, flat, heavy & highly polished pebble of appropriate size and shape, like those found at the bottom of a fast flowing river.

Make a fire and position the pebble in the fire until such time the pebble is very hot, then using tongs, yep you guessed it...Hotrock the Lotus!

Alternatively use a piece of glass shaped for purpose...maybe a Lotus sized disc?

I don't find myself off the grid too often, but when I'm going to be in the boonies for several days straight I bring my trusty Arizer Solo and a few extra stems in case one breaks.

Depending on how long I'm gone I'll take 2 or 3 fully charged high capacity batteries with me. Each one can last me about 2 - 3 full days worth of operation. I'm rarely gone for longer than a week so it works out.

Though when we went up to the cottage (shoveling the roof) the other day I took my Underdog, miniVVPS and the new rechargeable battery I'm working on instead of the Solo, and was really pleased with the performance. I had a vaporizer, hand warmer and cell phone charger all in one at the ready, certainly made the cold job a lot easier.

http://verdampftnochmal.de/products/en/vaporizer/element-pocket-vaporizer.html;) Someone has yet to pull the trigger on that one.. It seems to me the best solution for off the grid..
Other than that.. The best solution for me is vapo-bowl.. i need only 2-3 x 2-33 secs with the big torch to finish a nicely loaded bowl.. Either screw the metal vapo bowl on minibong or long lipe.. or like me use only the cap on long glass pipe :).. [IMG]

Yeah, someone should try that damn contraption at some point!

Oh man, I hope that would be possible!!! A Lotus that could be also used with a wood fire? Take my money and soul now!

A put-in-the-hot-coals solution seems like the most sustainable way right now and other than the initial cost it would cost nothing in the long run. I wonder how the Sub UFO could be used with a portable metal pipe of some sort so you don't need any fragile glass to pair it with…

A stone similar to these would be ideal, as non-porous as possible, the thinner the better & choose a size roughly the same diameter as the Lotus bowl:

But, a piece of glass shaped for purpose would be better.

Good starting page here on how to gauge the temperature of an object based on its colour:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flame#Flame_temperature

So, find out what temps a butane lighter reaches(or whatever lighter people use to hit the Lotus), then heat your piece of glass/stone till it reaches the desired colour(Temperature).

    Trial and error required.

Would it retain the heat for 10 secs??? I would need it at 1300F for the Lotus! Could a rock or glass reach such temps in the coals?

Nice reading about the temps! :)

I'm fairly sure it would as stones have been used for hundreds if not thousands of years to store heat for far longer periods.

I don't see why not, but then I'm not an expert on thermal dynamics.

The temps of a wood fire can far exceed 1300F, I can't think of any reason why an object placed in a wood fire would not eventually reach the same temperature of that wood fire?

We are all familiar with the range of colors seen in the embers of a standard camp fire:

    ---------------

This thread has me curious now ...unfortunately I don't own a Lotus so hope you can update with your findings.

Now based on elevations and temperature change from day to night on the trail (who the hell stays on the main anyway) butane torches might get a little funky. The hammer has been ignited at 30,000 feet in a crazy promotional. I love vaporization and all but for hiking a dugout can't be beat. However if you must vaporize id suggest the bronze VG, having the bowl lower is a huge improvement.

I carried one of those little plastic magnifying Glasses that came in "craker jack" boxes as a prize in my wallet for years to light my proto-pipe during the day. Worked like a champ.
