Any of you vapeheads also metalheads?

Wondering what you're all listening to. I'm vaping and listening tithe Krallice discography while cooking all day. Just ordered the Ulcerate vinyl on Willowtip this afternoon as well.

nothing at the moment(actually I don't listen to music that often, mostly while driving my bicycle or travelling otherwise), but probably my favorte song to vape up to is holy diver. especially of I'm already vaped, then I take a few more hits during the intro, abd put the vae away before the song 'bashes' in

I kind of gave up on metal after all the oz x fest crap started to take over. I was into old stuff Thrash,Speed,death,Black,Shock metal I smoked 7 gram joint with Chris Barns and the other members of Six Feet Under. Now I'm into EU Psychobilly, Bluegrass, Folk,Scumfolk but some days the Scumdog in me comes out and I just crave G.W.A.R a clip of an old goodie in case you never heard before

I like classic metal or anything in general that doesn't have the "screamo" type singing.
Anything that took Sabbath as inspiration probably

Right on SD! I am a metal head to the core,and classic Black Sabbath my music of choice for....well just about any occasion.
I am also NOT a fan of some of the new scream,grunt,growl and mumble metal. Call me old school but I prefer it when a singer actualy sings! I also dig Five Finger Death Punch,Bobaflex,Volbeat and of course Metallica!
To be totaly honest though I LOVE Slayer! They never disappoint in concert and I've been a loyal fan since Reign In Blood came out.

I love all forms of metal. Even the ones with rough vocals. I know a lot people can't get past the initial abrasion but I treat it more like it was an instrument than a person singing. But there are a lot of bands that use rough vocals that I just can't get enough of like Amon Amarth, Ensiferum, Cradle of Filth, Dethklok and At The Gates. Amorphis switches between clean and rough too and sound fucking awesome. The raw power and control that some of these musicians like Dani Filth or Kind Diamond had in their early days over their voices put them in a league of vocal instrumentation totally different from the traditional singing methods we've all come to expect as the norm.

Of course my main vein of metal that I consider closest to me is Progressive metal like Dream Theater, Symphony X or Ayreon with majority of the vocals being clear and used as a mechanism for forwarding a story or meaning to the song. But I am saddened by how many people pass the darker sides of metal by because of how different it is from what they are used too.

Gotta love King Diamond! His vocals on the song "Abigail" still hold up as some of the best in opera style vocals in metal.IMHO he paved the way for soaring vocals in metal.
Dream Theater? Symphony X? Got them on every playlist.

Any other fans of Opeth? I'm also a fan of some other "heavier" bands like Gojira, Lamb of God, Meshuggah… Got to see a couple Lamb of God shows in their hometown, right up front. GREAT times.

At my age it's pretty rare to find a new band that gets me exited for more. Thank you for that.

That's one of their better ones, their album Colors is 10/10 in my book.

A bit more oldschool, Refused was my first venture less than an hour into meeting what would become my first best friend in my new school district in 5th grade. From here I branched off into stuff like The Clash and related works.



This one branches off into a newer "genre" of metal, djent guitarwork which is liked by some, and hated by others... Volumes has the talent for sure, they're actually where I found out about Substructure.



A fun way to find music is to take a favorite artist, make a station for it on Pandora, and watch the related artists pour in

I'm not a "metalhead" at all, but I like a lot of metal so I thought I'd look, then you mention two amazing and not so well known metal bands in your post.
I fucking LOVE the latest Krallice album, it's been blowing my mind since I got it. can't wait for the vinyl. If you like Krallice, check out a band called Wild Hunt. they have some similar non-black black metal going on (I refer to Krallice as "light blue metal") with lots of ambience and some doom bits, an interesting mix and one of the best metal albums of last year, stunning production.
Ulcerate are great too, they always sounded like a slightly less insane version of "Obscura" era Gorguts, but with more focus on groove.

seeing as you seem to have good taste, a few metal recommendations from a non-metalhead (various styles of metal):
Cleric (FUCK!!!!),
Dimesland,
Astomatous (Krallice rhythm section doing amazing old-school tech-death),
Electro Quarterstaff,
Pan.Thy.Monium (funny old-school proggy sludge, check Dream II first),
Tholus,
Sickening Horror (the first album is sick, jazzy tech stuff),
Portal (the most interesting death metal band in years)
Deathspell Omega (possibly the best of the best of the best, excelling in every area of composition, musicianship and production).

just a few interesting bits of the top of my head. if you like Krallice you've probably heard them already, but the latest Dysrhythmia and Behold… the Arctopus albums are both amazing. and new Gorguts soon with Colin Marston and Kevin Hufnagel!

Thanks. Some of these names are new to me. 2012 was a black/doom metal year for me. I was listening to Cobalt, Agalloch, Wolves in the Throne Room, Pallbearer, Thou, Tombs, Inquisition non-stop. This year, so far, has been MUCH more about dissonant death metal, like Portal or Ulcerate. Gorguts have been doing it for me too.

Deathspell Omega do lots of dissonance, mostly on the last few releases, Paracletus sounds like dissonant tech-death more than black metal (most of their later stuff does). Dodecahedron too, and Dimesland (mentioned before, and more like a dissonant Atheist). Can't think of much else to suggest, and admittedly I'm no metaller… more of a weird jazz kind of guy.
but if you feel brave and aren't a guitar/drum/bass purist, try some Univers Zero some time. Their album "Heresie" is some of the heaviest shit I ever heard, dissonant but very doomy. all played on bassoon, oboe, violin, harmonium etc with drums and a bit of guitar.
sorry, that album is just an essential for fans of "heavy" anything... back to metal.

Not my favourite of their work, but lots of very Gorguts/Ulcerate kind of stuff going on.
Still with their own style.



If you like this, check out everything from " Si Monvmentvm Reqvires, Circvmspice" onwards. They've got three albums and five EPs that are all astounding. Very interesting.

I'm really interested in getting into krallice. Do you guys have any recommended entry points for someone who hasn't heard anything by then?

hard to say without knowing what you're into. I'd say with a band of such quality it;s best to listen from the beginning and hear how they develope. When I first heard Krallice's debut it just sounded like repetitive tremolo picking (I was expecting something very different), but then the riffs start to make sense and the maze opens up, it gets kind of addictive as it makes more sense on every listen. It doesn't even sound that complex at first but some of what they are doing is insane.
The second album, "Dimensional Bleedthrough", is the most accessible I reckon… not sure why, but it's very clear and uplifting.
"Diotima" was the most dissonant, wouldn't recommend it as a first.
The latest album is more like what I expected, the complexity is more obvious (and it's just more complex). It may not be an obvious choice, but if you're getting into it because you've read it's "progressive" etc then the last album may be more what you're looking for.

I'm old school thrash metal (Metallica, Slayer, Overkill etc.), Sevendust, Type O Negative, Classic Rock (Sabbath, Floyd, Zep).

I posted an EP of theirs before, this is a 69 minute album and the best metal I've heard from 2013 so far.
sludge, doom and black metal combined with elements of Southern music and early '70s Pink Floydish (not very progressive) prog. But it works really well, the production makes it. If you like the EP you'll love it, if you haven't listened to any then check this out!
