There have to be other people that hate Valentine's Day as much as I do. Am I bitter, you ask? ABSOLUTELY! What really grinds my gears is how many couples take each other for granted; how many wonderful people stay with someone who treats them like shit.

I'd like to remind my fellow singles that Saint Valentine was beaten, clubbed, and beheaded. What a comforting thought. Happy Singles Awareness Day!

    I have a little Valentine's Day tradition.

I buy chips, hummus, guacamole, pizza, beer, and booze. Then I go to wherever my home is that year. Then I get fucking hammered to the point that I can't get out of bed until late afternoon the next day.

Thanks to my little friends Absolut (Hey, I'm an ex-Northerner.) and Dogfish Head, everything is right on course this year!

I never notice that much from valentine's day, for me it's like all those other holidays that I vaguelyu know exist, but have never celebrated or paid attention to(like all-saints, those colored days before easter, etc)
the only difference is that the programming on tv is uusually slightly different, a lot of valentine-episodes. but this year it was on a friday so I was at a bar drinking beer instead of watching tv, so this year valentine's day was even less noticable as other years.
except that there were some people handing out chocolates at the campus

I think most holidays are contrivances designed to sell merchandise, with zero awareness as to the roots or traditions that the holiday is spoofing.

That said, I am married, so I took my wife out for dinner last night. No candies or silly cards were given, and it could have been any other Friday night, really.

Valentine's day, I think as you suggest in a way, is an expression of affirmation, not necessarily needed or practical at that time for everyone.

For some it can serve as a good opportunity to make up for lost time, so to speak, but that doesn't always speak kindly of the relationship, generally.

For me, I think I'd find a special way to celebrate, in commemoration of every other special ordinary day - a little extra icing on the cake:luv::love:;)

Just remember everyone, always recycle, and save your money. For example, women love it when they are given flowers, but on V day they can get kinda expensive. So I suggest on V day morning late at night when it is dark, to go to your local cemetery, and recycle the flowers that are just going to waste on those grave stones that are just there for momentary decoration, and regift them to your loved ones. It is great for recycling which mother earth and greenies love, and it is recycles the plant by giving it another use. And if you feel bad about taking off of graves just remember, if you don't do it, then someone else will, and that someone else is called the groundskeeper who mows the lawn so if anything you are doing his job for him, and this way you are doing him a favor.

Remember as the wise philosopher once said at possum lake, "I'm pulling for you, were all in this together".

Valentines day was good for me - motivation to take my girl to a nice place to eat :luv:
As college students we spend most of our free time together, breaking up the routine of mean plan meals was good.

Why hate anything really? Hate?:\ Kinda a strong feeling for a day? Especially one that attempts to promote love. :2c:

Lol. Well I cant say I hate valentines but I am a bit past ambivalent about it. I don't look forward to it, the constant advertising and decorations irritate me, it doent bother me that I have always been single for the day. In general I do my best to ignore it other than to wish my married/long term relationship friends a happy day then go back to ignoring it. Patheticily if you change the words its about how i feel about my bday lol

I think commercially driven holidays are good for poor people. It allows those with extra money a chance to go in to the stores to use the holiday as an excuse to spend extra money so that those who do need the money can get a commission or a tip from the rich or irresponsible spenders.

The only secret is if you do have someone in your life, then don't do anything for them that would cost money, instead clean or cook or both for them, and give them a back rub. That way your just as romantic, with not wasting money. And like I said if you can also make money on others holiday spending. Even better.

The best part is if you do not have a gf to spend money on, then you can use that as a excuse to just buy a date for an hour, that way you get all the good stuff the day can offer all used up in an hour of joy, and you probably did not spend any more then someone who actually has a person in their life that they would have spent the money on.

It is a great way that young kids can use as an icebreaker excuse for handing valentines to those they have a crush on but do not know what the right place or right time is to mention it. Also this crush admitting tradition is continued forever as v d office parties are an excuse to drink at work act flirty and get away with it while on the clock. Also many rich companies. Can now spend that money by law on the employees giving holiday pay.

I don't believe in using subliminal messages, I feel it is unethical.
