Perhaps one or more spammers got removed swiftly, clearing the place to be filled again? I have no idea how that works btw, merely speculating here.
We had a run of spammers out of China yesterday. If we spot a spammer we ban the account and the number goes down. I'm not sure if it fluctuates with temporary bans.
