Vicki, if it makes you feel better, pops and I raise a steer every year and a half or two for beef. Pops invites some of his brothers and we make an afternoon out of cleaning an 1100lb monster. Enough meat to give away to everyone and still have enough to hold us over until the next steer.

The ONLY downside to this? Dad was a chef for 12 years and raised animals all his life... even the steaks at the nice places can't compare anymore! The only beef I can eat now is in burgers/burritos. The meat we raise is way too tasty :(

Actually, it doesn't make me feel any better. Cows are sentient, and I know they know what is happening, like the cow in the video I posted. It makes my stomach hurt to even watch that video. :(

I do understand that people enjoy the taste, though. I love bacon, and pigs are very intelligent. That's going to have to be the next thing to go for me.

I read that pigs are right in between chimps and dolphins re intelligence. I have done some incredible long-term fasts and the two most toxic tastes to come back to were white sugar and bacon--just touching it to my tongue was like gasoline no exaggeration.

Bacon is such an addictive flavor, they really nailed that one but it has to do more with the way it's cured than anything else. I used to eat the steer and pig we raised in high school, and the hams and bacon were just smoked not cured; this was much better, much more natural tasting and probably less addictive. The hams were white like pork chops not pink, the bacon looked different too.

I went biblical reletavely recently to reduce my meat toxin exposure: no swine--must have cloven hooves, no web-footed fowl, no shellfish or flatfish--must have fins and scales, and as a modern update, no ground or 'pressed and formed' meat, and no nitrate/lunchmeats. As far as beef goes I still like lean cuts like london broil and ny strips. The only ground meat I will buy is vacuum packed buffalo/bison.

And I'm very picky about chicken, eggs, and turkey. Especially the eggs, I have a great source.

I know pigs are very intelligent. Makes me extremely guilty when I eat bacon.

I wish I had a source.
