Hey zen what does your heating element look like on full power ? Is it glowing from top to bottom ? Glad ya enjoying it ,i spent my first hour sucking on fresh air :)

Nope. I was worried at first, which was why I had it cranked up and combusted. Pretty much the top 2/3rd's are red, with the bottom portion still being white.

EDIT: Just checked, and when at the 12 o'clock position only the top half of my heating element is glowing. When on full its a little less than 2/3rd's glowing. I'm guessing this is not the typical behavior? My herb still seems to get nice and toasted on a 1 o'clock position.

EDIT 2: Heat production is definitely not an issue, having managed to combust on the 2:30 position. I'm enjoying fiddling with the knob (hee hee) and adjusting my draw speed along with the heat on the fly to find what works best. As others have said it is a very technique driven device.

Yes.
I use my aromatop for purging
I set a flat corelle plate on TOP of the aromatop, with my BHO on it, and it bubbles till done.
I do it outside on same dish using the sun and magnifying glass too!

Cheers for looking zen , seems mine is ok then , i was just under the impression it would instantly toast your herbs at certain temps . I thought i would be an expert with the ssv the moment i got it because i have been reading about it for weeks.... , but having played with it properly last night i can see how even the way you pack the bowl makes it react differently at other temps and it works so much better when it has been warm for hours . sorry for bothering you all with dumb questions and thanks for the help.

No worries I'm still learning as I go along as well! I was totally paranoid my unit wasn't heating up enough when I've proven twice to myself that it is not the case. I'm surprised at how much more evenly everything is toasted using the SSV compared to the MFLB. I know its because of Convection vs. Conduction but I didn't expect the change to be so drastic.

I'm going to try the SSV using a much smaller amount today. Will let you know how it goes!

Out of curiosity, what color unit did you get?

I got the black veined with a black base , i did order the rainbow zen but it was out of stock. Yeah let me know how you get on with a smaller amount because im going to hold on to my no2 i think for using smaller amounts as it seems much more efficient at the moment but as i have only just got the ssv i have no right to claim that untill i have more experience!

I think this thing rocks with small loads. For some reason I thought I would have to mod this.

This is what is making me concerned because, like i have said before i was under the impression this unit is a beast, but if i dont fill the bowl to at least three q ( where it is lovely and i have full control of vapour quantity and denseness) i can hardly get a hit but im new to vaping and have been previously using an no2 .

I have the heat up to 1-2:00, and a small hit in the bottom of the bowl vapes nicely. As with most vapes it's a balance of inhale speed and dial temp, but I found it pretty easy.

The most I've ever packed is maybe 3/4"

There are many variables, I like to let mine warm up around 1 pm then slightly turn down b4 using whip, warm up at near full power and turn to 330 pm when bonging! I find it works best when left on constant. Other variables besides temp, are strain types, screen installed correct, heater cover installed correct, length of tubing as well as length of tube in wand, how you inhale, how dense you pack wand, if you have aroma top, etc etc....

Its obviously me being new to vapes and having the no2 as my first one then where you just cook and suck, but i read the no2 was not really rated for clouds but i get loads with really small amounts which confused me when i do not with the ssv with the same amount but i guess im a noob

I did another 1/3 wand, and it took me through most of the day off and on. I still haven't managed to be able to get my flowers as dark as I did in the MFLB without combusting yet, but that will come in time.

So is the consensus with the element that most of them do not turn completely orange?

Well, I've been experimenting and I love the small hits. You get most of the goodness in 1-2 big hits (on higher temp like 2:00) before it starts going "stale." Small hits, mind you. I'm sure everyone else already knows this, but this is my journey of SSV discovery.

Journey log #2 The Everclear 190 Proof arrived. What a luxurious solvent. Not cheap but works at least as well as 99% Iso (so far it seems) and no harmful potential. I cleaned a cute little wooden pipe. Soaked it. Cleaned it extremely well and evaporated very fast. No aftertaste. I'm really happy. I'd use this to make extracts in a heartbeat.

I love the SSV. Great vaping experience with the standard gear.

Yeah I've had a great experience with the unit today. The only downside so far is that my sweet bag had the inside pockets sewn in upside down compared to the way they are on the website. This results in the glass falling out due to gravity and sliding in with the metal SSV. Maybe I'll attempt to restitch the pockets? We'll see.

The pockets are very often upside down, I have found.
Never dropped a wand yet, once the wand and mouthpiece are in there and the bag closed.
I too worried in the beginning~

It looks solid to me....makes perfect sense. no dangerous torch. the surfer works well for herbs. i can only imagine that it would be made for something of this application.

It seems like a lot of equipment to get all claimed up with oil. Imo I don't know if I would get an ssv if you only plan on using it as a daily driver oils. If you want a torch less oil setup what about a dome less and a hakko wand. Don't get me wrong I LOVE my ssv for flowers. I could even see me getting a ssv oil dome setup to use on occasion. I just don't think for my goto daily tool, I would want that much extra surface area for my oils to condense on and dilute flavor with really high grade oil...... :2c:

I use the oil kit on my DBV and it is perfect.
I am not sure bout the angles here. The titanium nail is not straight up and down.
I think the kit good for the SSV owner that wants to convert back and forth, but if going for this as an oil kit principally, The DBV with oil rig makes more sense to me.
(and the DBV with it's oil rig is the easiest cleanest dab settup I have used to date)

Does anyone have a technique that they use to get there flowers a nice dark chocolate color? I tend to try to get mine as close to black as possible without combustion, but the darkest I've been able to get so far is somewhere between milk chocolate and dark chocolate.

I find slowing my draw speed down towards the end helps a lot (is what let me get it darker than just milk chocolate). Is there anything else I should keep in mind?

Ime after golden brown I would rather save the abv for edibles than have the stale hit. Yes, a slower inhale and/or higher temps are my culprits when I am close to combustion.

If you are using a hand held wand with standard HC.. you will notice that the hole on the HC is much smaller. I find that I just have to draw slowly and maneuver the wand "hither and to" and I can toast the load as dark as I choose. If I do not move the standard wand around, the spot I concentrate on can be almost black.. and even brought to combustion!

Comment.
The Hand Held Wand and Standard HC SSV is still my daily driver and preferred tool!
