Hey guys. Life's been a bit hectic the last week or so with non-Wychwood stuff and I'm just about getting back on track.
I've been working on a closed core design, trying not to use any glues or silicones. I have one but I'm not sure if people will like it. I've knocked up 2 with the new design. Performance wise nothing is lost. Here's the design - I would appreciate any feedback guys.

I've tried looking up issues concerning copper but haven't found anything yet that's turning me off it. HERE'S a general health fact sheet about copper to start the discussion.

@Vitolo. I'm glad your digging your WW :) After seeing your efficiency vid I did some tests myself and was quite amazed by the clouds a pinch can give - I now mainly load a Vito-sized pinch and find it totally get's me there - Thank you Vape Zen Master Vitolo.

@FMG. Love it!!! :D What's that pot-bellied piece? A new addition to the line-up? Super vid and it's also inspired me to watch 'The Team' today - fuck yeah!!!

So, here's a vid I made. It shows the new wood stem head install and also a Wychwood Special that has the new core installed. It was going onto the website Special page but I kept for myself! Having VAS and making vapes might not have been the best idea

The Specials will be one-offs that will be sold 'First-Come', unlike the core woods which are made to order.

If you look at page 5 there is a pic of the original core design with the air flow indicated.

JRR, beautifull stem.

And i love the way you can insert the stem in the glass bit. Is it possible to interchange with a wood short stem like the ones you have in the website and Vito loves so much? :D

@Vorange. I have changed my short GonG stems to the same install. I use a longer insert in the Full Length stems - but the Short Stem insert will fit in the Full.

@Wat. Ace :) Wat a small world ;) That track was a Youtube freebie.

Nice video JRR :p I recognize that wooden stem from the website.. You definitely mated it well with that special unit.

I'm getting the new core version, right ? Won't be able to do much of a comparison, but I'll be sure to post my thoughts on it.

Is it okay if I use your picture of my new WW as my avatar ? :D

Thanks OD. Yup yours has the closed core design. If at any time in the future it needs to be altered it's a very simple process.

And knock yourself out with the avatar pic. Looks good

Ahh, Baka laka daka :lmao:
That piece is the "Rainbow Mystery Piece" from my sig.

It's currently the combustion bong for my buddies, but I'm thinking of confiscating it from them since they don't use it too much (but they'll use their cheap $10-15 Rubber Grommet pieces:shrug:)

I'm really liking all the stem options.

I've been using the 2 part silicone stem the last few days, and I think it gives me the densest clouds.

From what I can gather, I get 1-2 thick clouds, then 1 or 2 thinner clouds with the silicone, while with the all glass stem, I seem to get 1 really thick one, and then 3 or 4 moderate ones.
I get similar performance to the all glass with my (shorty?) wood stem.

I think the complete airtight seal of the silicone is whats making the difference here.

I love all the options though, just gives me more experimenting to do :science::D

Just got myself one of these, plugged it in, impatiently waited about 5 minutes and still managed to get some large clouds through my bong, nice work.
I'm looking forward to having it on 24/7 always ready to go. I will post a review in due time when I've gotten properly used it. At the moment I'm definitely feeling it though.

Waited another ten minutes and just got some massive rips! This little thing packs some punch!

Although not as impressive as keeping the VHW at bay, my WW has keep all my other daily vapes at bay as well.

Yesterday i introduced a friend of mine to the Wonderful World of Wych, with a bowl of herbs and moroccan hash and he left with a smile and slits instead of eyes. hehehe.

As for me, i served myself another bowl of herbs and trichomes from my grinder, pure bliss!

It was a good day. ;)

Been a bit absent recently after the missus spilled half a cup of water on the laptop and none of the keys would work! After taking it apart, drying with a hair dryer and rebooting several times I've got it working again :)

Super happy that you got your WW and that your enjoying it Q. Looking forward to a full report once you've had some time to get acquainted.

And chuffed that the WW has become your daily drivers CDS and V :D

Love the wooden stem and the WW you gifted yourself Cookie

That BL bub is still a beaut to btw

So is the design with the copper cup going to be the finished design for now, or are you still in the middle of researching and/or experimenting?

Thanks OTA - we all need a little treat once in a while ;)

ATM the copper cap is an option. I will make to the customers request the old or the new core. I am still trying to find alternatives, but for now I think the copper is all good and there if people want it.

I'm trying to work out how to do the specials now that there is an option for the cores. I think I might do the woodwork, then photograph and finish up the internals once the customer has decided which core to go with. There's a few problems that might arise that way - like the wood splitting after install - but that's the nature of wood!

ilovebOObs

can i stick my male joint in there?
dam this vape looks kick-ass! if i didn't have my HI i would be all over this.

got my first wood stem a few days ago and it friggin rocks! why did i wait so long.

i also got so baked and miss place the scoopy thingy :( i'm sure its around here somewhere but just can't remember where and it had an e-pic chained to it too..

We sure do brother, I wonder what's taking mine so long :(

(just an inside joke people, this remark does in no way refer to Cookies customer service or anything related to that)

I'm a little confused which one to pick now though. Could you just explain in short again what exactly the copper cap is shielding from the airpath you were worried people would be worried about in the first place?

Lmao, I lost my fav stirring tool like that over 6 months ago Boobs. I know it must be around my desk somewhere, but I still haven't found it yet. It does give one a good excuse to get some new ones though

ps: those spoons that come with the little coke-snorting bottles make great kief spoons if you're looking for something like that.

Thanks b00bsy. I'm sure your tool and pick'll turn up soon they - they do come in handy for sure.

@OTA. About the copper cap; Basically it's in case someone is bothered by the wood in the bottom of the vape not being closed off. IMO this is dead space and the air flow doesn't connect - but some people might be bothered so it's there as an option.

Oh cool. I thought you might have put it there because there was some sort of glue or something in the bottom, but if it's just for the wood I think I'm just gonna go with the original open core.

I'll send you an pm in a little bit

Well, I had a bit of a mishap tonight :\.
I had my WW on my bedside table, set at 13.5v, and I was watching some TV.
I turn around to have a stem, and notice the WW isn't on the bedside table - it had fallen on to my bed, and under a fold in the covers :o.

The WW itself didn't feel all that hot to the touch (compared to what it feels like when it's up to temp under normal conditions), but the plastic covering of my VVPS power cord had melted a bit :uhoh:.

I felt around where it was in the blanket, and it wasn't particularly hot in there, I'd call it toasty, but that's about it.

I had noticed previously that the metal power plug can get quite hot during normal use (but never took too much notice of it because the power plug makes it almost impossible to touch it while plugged in), so my theory is that the plug got way hotter than the unit way quicker...

The strangest part about it though, was the effect it seems to have had on my VVPS...
It has 2 plug holes in it - 1 for a pedal, which has a LED indicator, and 1 for a tattoo gun (or log ).

After I had inspected the melted plug, I noticed that the LED indicator was off...
This is whats confusing the hell out of me...
When I have port 1 bridged with a custom plug to be always on, the LED indicator stays on.
It doesn't matter whether a log is connected or not to port 2, so long as that 1st port is connected, the LED should be on.

So I played around with the cord, and that LED flickered a bit.
When I unplugged the WW, the LED was on, just like normal, I plug the WW in (to port 2), it turns off...
 :hmm:

I thought there might be a bridge in the plug itself, but I've ruled that out (not that it should matter anyway...) and I've figured out that if I put some pressure on the plug (at the WW, not the VVPS), the LED comes back on, and it'll heat the WW...

So, I've turned it off, I'm gonna let it sit here overnight to cool down etc, and tomorrow I'm gonna start playing detective again to see if I can figure this out...

That's strange...
I have this model, and the LED behaves the opposite way:
  • as long as I bridge port 1, it stays OFF
  • if I don't plug any port, it stays OFF
  • if I plug in my WW and port 1 isn't bridged, it turns ON, and the WW doesn't heat up
So for me the LED acts as a bypass indicator....

It's definitely a rough day for Wychwoods, 'cause I dropped my maple stem earlier and broke the bottom glass part

I know that the Tattoo power supplies offer the variable aspects that people are looking for and they are quite compact, but I personally think that you can get great results using a Multi Voltage Power adaptor with a 13.2v setting. Just switch to 13.2 when you want a boost in temp. They are relatively cheap and work well ime.

@FMG. I did a test on a WW to see if it would cause a fire if covered for a long period of time. I left it for several hours wrapped in a towel. Although there was no fire the towel and wood did get scorched. I think WW are claustrophobic and don't like to be confined or swaddled!!!

@OpalinDays. Sorry to hear about the stem - I'll send you out the replacement part asap.

Well, I did a bit more digging today, still have NFI what the deal is.

In the sunlight, I can see that a portion of the wood is a bit darker than the rest - I've read that wood can darken over time with heat, I guess my little blanket mishap just turbo-charged that section .

I just can't get my VVPS to reproduce these symptoms with any of my other log vapes...

I tried my original WW (I'll have to get that off to you soon J.R.R;)), and the VVPS behaved normally.
I tried my Semi-Functional UD, and it worked fine.
I tried my recently arrived replacement UD, and it worked fine.
I tried "mishap WW" and I got the strange VVPS behavior...

So... Umm... Yeah, this one's a head scratcher...
:hmm:

I got a little extention cord thingy with my new UD, which has a LED in the plug, which I was hoping would act as a continuity indicator for the plug - when it's plugged in to a log, it'd light up, when not plugged in, it'd be off.
It actually just turns on if there is power coming to the plug - much like that LED indicator for port 1...
Not exactly how I had hoped it would work, but it's still cool nonetheless

Oh, and I've also noticed that my VVPS readout will drop to 0.1-0.2v when that LED indicator turns off...
Unplug the WW, straight back to 13.X.
